Hi Behfor, I have a CAT 5E Data cable, a CAT 5E Patch cable and a CAT 5E Cross-Over cable that I found in my storage box. Can I use any cable for any connection to do this test? What is the difference between these cables?
@Behfor4 ай бұрын
Hi! Yes, you can use any of the CAT 5E cables for your test, but there are some differences between them: CAT 5E Data Cable (Straight-through): Typically used for connecting different devices like a computer to a router or switch. CAT 5E Patch Cable: It’s essentially a shorter straight-through cable, often used for connecting devices within a patch panel or between network devices. CAT 5E Cross-Over Cable: Designed for connecting two similar devices directly (e.g., two computers without a switch in between). For most modern devices, you can use any of them, as they automatically detect the connection type. But ideally, use the straight-through cables for standard connections.

@@Behfor I connected the Cross-Over cable between my desktop computer and the Access Point, and the wifi got disconnected and I could not connect to the internet. After unplugging the cross-over cable and restarting the access point. I got wifi and internet back again.

I says it requires a server to client test, but literally, you don't have to run it on the server right? I can designate another client workstation and set it as a server and configure another client workstation and that's it. RIght?
@Behfor4 жыл бұрын
Yes you can set a workstation as an iperf server.
@simply-tom4 жыл бұрын
@@Behfor Ok, that sounds easy enough. I will actually run this on my network tomorrow at work. We don't have that kind of money to spend on expensive testing software so this is perfect. Our ISP only measures speed from the router to their outside connection so I will measure our internal LAN speed. Thanks again!

My lan on my router is only 100 megabit. If I got a gigabit switch would the devices connected to the switch be connected with a gigabit link?
@Behfor6 жыл бұрын
That's correct, normally when 2 devices connected to the same switch want to talk to each other their data stays within the switch and if it is a Gigabit switch then their connection should be 1 Gbps too (Of course there are exceptions to this in more advanced networks when there are VLANs and routing) but if data needs to go to the router (using internet or a connection between a device connected to switch and a device connected to router) then the speed should be 100 Mbps. Thanks!
@SilentShad0W6796 жыл бұрын

C.rolando Remember too that Cat5 and Cat5e are not the same. Mostly what you’re getting when you buy or get a cable with a device is Cat5e; which works perfectly fine in a home or office business setting. You don’t NEED Cat6 unless you’re going to implement 10Gb, which is used in corporate environments mostly. And even in those scenarios the speed to the PC from the switch is usually 1Gb. The 10Gb is generally used between the edge/access switch and the distribution/core switch.

As far as I know there are some public iperf3 servers that you can use for that purpose.

As someone who wants to move away from Windows OS after using it for 24 years (Goodbye Windows 11, Goodbye Control Panel), it would be great if you show how to install iperf on Linux OS as well. but how can i test bandwidtth to router ?
@Behfor8 ай бұрын
Some Wireless routers allow you to install Iperf server on the router itself, if you have an Asus router with Asuswrt-Merlin firmware you should be able to do that.
@LentakyuctikUctik8 ай бұрын
@@Behfor I want to do on tp link, but have also mikrotik and asus.
@Behfor8 ай бұрын
@@LentakyuctikUctik you can look into installing 3rd party firmware like openwrt and dd-wrt, they allow you to install entware which should have the Iperf server. I havn't touched dd-wrt and openwrt for a while so make sure to do your own research too.
@LentakyuctikUctik8 ай бұрын
@@Behfor I tried to install openwrt on one tp link and it didn't turn out well, so I'll probably stay with the fact that I won't measure it via the router 😀.
@Behfor8 ай бұрын
@@LentakyuctikUctik I see. Another option would be to hardwire a computer that is also an iPerf Server to the router. Depending on the router and the computer, this connection could be 1Gbps, 2.5Gbps, or 10Gbps. Let's assume it is 1Gbps. Now, if you use a wireless client as an iPerf client and run a speed test to the server, if the result is less than 1Gbps, this means this is the WiFi speed between the wireless client and the router. But if the result is close to 1Gbps, then you know the wired connection is the bottleneck, and your WiFi speed could be faster than 1Gbps. Hope that makes sense.

Can i use it if i have different LAN and routers ?

This is network speed not Internet speed! I think you probably were misunderstood, because 1 Gbps is pretty normal in wired connection.
@devikasnair55804 жыл бұрын
@@Behfor Both data transfer rate and bandwidth(2.4) are low here. I'm located in India :p here recently they provide upto max 1gbps only on top cities and it's about 55usd per month(4000rupees) so most of us choose 50mbps plan for 6usd per month.. (600 indian rupees) it's expensive in terms of rupees..
@Behfor4 жыл бұрын
I understand, but this video was about internal network speed, and has nothing to do with the service provider or internet!!!. Every wireless router you buy today can provide 1 Gbps wired speed (regardless of what your internet speed is). You can use your internal network to transfer files between computers in your network without any internet connection. In this video I tested the internal network speed, no internet needed for this and you don't pay anything to anybody. I hope you got what I'm trying to say.
