I also found this tool recently and I think another advantage is that you can have it on multiple platforms to see how the network speed works. You can do the tests both from fixed network or wireless, both for short or longer periods. In my case I tested 1 gbps and it also depended if other devices connected to the server, this is not easy to check but the results I've got showed me that there might be traffic done by the devices that yourself didn't initiate. Once again thank you for the video !

Funny story: Recently I was getting absolute shit speeds on my hard-wired desktop. I treid everything to get the speed back restarts, computer and router, drivers, etc. and it was always dirt slow. I did some research and people were saying my ethernet cable was broken. Now it was an old cable but I thought surely if the cable was broken it would just be broken it wouldn't be slow...but as I tried everything else I decided to just buy a new ethernet cable. Wouldn't you know, that fixed the issue right up and I made sure to route it better so the cable wouldn't get crushed to death again. I can see a value in testing your local network but at least in this case a regular old speed test was enough to point me in the right direction.
@James_Knott
@James_Knott Жыл бұрын
Gb Ethernet needs all 4 pairs in the cable. 10 & 100 Mb only need 2. So, a damaged cable might work fine at 10, but not higher speed. However, negotiation takes place at 10 Mb, so the devices might think they can run at 1 Gb, but can't.
@ragnarok7976

Speed can also be limited with all wires intact if the cable is low quality, poorly terminated, or poorly installed (close and in parallel to power lines, out-of-spec bends, etc) because of poor SNR.

Heh, reminds me of a story I saw on (I think) Twitter. A dude is talking about how the top IT guy in his company keeps an ethernet cable on/in his desk, labeled "broken". He was asked by one of the new techs why he keeps the cable, why he doesn't just throw it out. He goes, "I'll show you why. Take it, and plug it into a tester." New tech does just that, cable checks out perfectly fine. "Try another tester." Same thing, cable checks out perfectly fine. "Now, go plug it into your computer." Tech goes to his computer, unplugs the network cable, and plugs in the "broken" one. Network connection drops entirely. He swaps it back, it's fine. Swaps again, network's dead. Top IT guy goes, "THAT'S why I keep that cable, as a reminder."

7:59 The reason Windows routes everything through the hyper-V switch when you have hyper-V enabled is because technically once you enable hyper-V Windows is running in a hyper-V container. Windows can't run the hyper-V on top of itself because of how hyper-V is coated so instead Windows switches to running virtualized on hyper-v. It's a super weird way for Microsoft to have set that up, but it's the way it works . 3:50 it's going to be a bit pedantic but snap is specific basically to just Ubuntu and Ubuntu derivatives. Whereas flat pack is a much more universal Linux packaging format and open speed test does have a flat pack, so I would have preferred that image to have been used for the Linux option. But also I went looked and that graphic was probably pulled directly from open speed tests website so I can't really rag on Joe too much about that

openspeedtest is nice, but there are 2 things it can't do: 1) SMB multichannel speed test (because it's not designed to utilize SMB multichannel protocol) 2) 10Gbit LAN benchmark is rather inaccurate (usually measures around 4.5-6.5 Gbit, and inconsistently) which I think is the limitation of web ui/api

@@James_Knottwho cares about "hdtv" when there's 4k? A good remux will easily saturate a 100mbps link. If course, when you're watching streaming, you might not notice it as the client will just f*k up your quality to make your content fit through. I'll quote this from Reddit "The maximum bitrate can easily exceed 100 Mbps in many movies, reaching 195 Mbps in Deadpool. Maximum bitrate isn't necessarily correlated to file size nor average bitrate: we see a bigger movie like Superman (76GB) having a smaller maximum bitrate (143Mbps) than a smaller movie like Deadpool (51GB) with a larger maximum bitrate (195Mbps)." In some cases, people report burst bitrates if about 450 mbps. So if you're not interested in watching high-quality 4k, sure, a 100mbps port will suffice

I get that the physical NIC is only a 1gig or 2.5gig it wont be any faster than that but my experience has always been better with the vmxnet3 NIC. With both iperf3 between my desktop computer and my pfSense firewall and my desktop to the speedtest server at my ISP, I get a bit over 920 Mb. That's pretty close to the maximum you can expect over 1 Gb. Also, I doubt there's a version OpenSpeedTest for my firewall, either client or server, so I'll stick with iperf3. Hey Thio, I have a synology nas and I have a couple of docker containers running on it. But I have to manually start the containers every time I restart the nas. I've searched how to start the contaiiners on startup but none of the methods I've tried works. Have you got it to work? If so, how? I'm not a linux expert, that's for sure! Thanks!

Although there's fibre passing my address, I seem to be OK with 18 Mb/s copper ADSL, seeing as I don't do big video files or play games etc, BUT looking at these speed tests, I think I should bite the bullet and get me some fibre Gb/s goodness.

@@BoraHorzaGobuchul Doh! I was thinking all wrong. I should and could have known better. Maybe it's because I live alone, and "local network" is not something I need nor have explored. I wouldn't consider a DSL modem/router connected by ethernet to a Tower machine, a Notebook connected by wifi, and a USB Terabyte drive, as a Network, more as a Tree. :-)

A neighbor who is savvy with computers told me some time ago that with WiFi he gets better reception with distances when he raises the height of his Moden as the signals radiated in a downward fashion. me I'm wired

Which protocoll is used UDP od IDP? My values of open test server are higher than in comparsion to iperf3. With Iperf3 1 hads speeds from 940-950 Mbit throughput in TCP mode. With Open Speed Test I hat vlues around 970 Mbits. How can that be. But using Open Test Server is incredibly easy.

i just ran a local transfer via steam to my brother's PC and it was capping at exactly 512 mbps though the host is a 2.5 gigabit port and client is 1 gigabit, between them is a 1 gigabit switch and im running at least CAT6 cables, some of them even 7 "between the modem and the switch" and looking to local stream using the network so thanks anyway for helping me with this inspection journey ❤

i have a CCTV in my house and they are using another gigabit switch but still connected to my network environment and i can check them even when i"m outside, is there any chance that they're bottlenecking my local speeds ? i know the could take some bandwith but could they be usin a whole 0.5 gigabit ?
