Behind Bars Season 2 Episode 5: El Hongo, Tecate, Mexico | Prison Documentary
Behind Bars - La Mesa, Mexico: • Behind Bars 2: The Wor...
El Hongo - a high-security bunker in Mexico´s desert. Sensors, cameras, mobile phone jammers - this prison is a veritable high-tech fortress. Snipers on fifteen guard towers make sure that nothing can get in or out. El Hongo is deemed perfectly incorruptible - in a country in which corruption runs through all levels of society like cancer. It is subject to immense violence and aggression among the inmates. Organized crime, cartel bosses, corrupt government members - the prisoners here would be able to endanger the safety of the entire country. Anyone who makes trouble will be sent to the punishment block. With sentences up to seventy years, many of the inmates have nothing to lose.
Inmate Gabriel has been behind bars for 15 years on charges of kidnapping. He comes from LA and is a member of a Hispanic gang "Blythe Street". For 10 years, he has been kept in special custody away from other prisoners. He is far from being as isolated as he makes his jailers believe…
Cell neighbor Gilbert hasn’t been outside of prison walls for more than 16 years. He snuffed out innumerable human lives for a Mexican cartel. In prison, he has to learn to come to terms with loneliness and dull monotony of his daily life without any help from the outside.
Carlos - the custodian of evil. For 10 years, the commander has been watching over El Hongo. One minute of straying attention may cost Carlos his life. The inmates can virtually smell the tension of their guards.

At first when I heard two of the inmates only got 1½ and 3 months sentences I was like: _''Well that isn't so bad''_ then I remembered they caught fucking 80 rats in a single day and probably didn't even make a dent in their numbers 🙄 Being dead > Madagascar prison.

Lol. I think its much better than madagascar, but I've said this before, it should be compared to normal living conditions. I am pretty sure most people from developed countries would find the living conditions in madagascar hell, and im pretty sure madagascarans would find this prison to be paradise while Bill Gates would probably find this place hell on earth bc of the conditions they're used to living in.

Yea, its like that the whole documentary. They get the main points across but lose the little details and just flat out ignore certain sentences that ad flavor to the conversation. They don't do a 1:1 translation and instead just get the major beats of the conversation out and sometimes change what the person said to be more specific(i.e. like general sentences about locations, nothing major though). Its a rough translation but it was not malicious like you sometimes see in other documentaries with an agenda.

Right?? How can they even allow that in a prison mostly because they say it is one of the most protected prison in Mexico. Lol that is what we call corruption at least allow them to have a rat as a pet or a roach. But a godamn bird or cat lol that is one of the things that doesn't make me proud of being Mexican. All the government corruption is what is messing up Mexico. Sometimes I feel that some racism is very necessary because all countries are corrupted. So in some part countries are right when it comes to them judging others. But also just because some part of the country is bad it shouldn't be held upon all the people. Like I mentioned all countries are corrupted and all countries have very bad people. But when the people can prove that they aren't bad we should be able to go live wherever we want. This world needs to be for everyone to travel and live wherever they want to. Just because a part of us are bad we shouldn't all be held for the actions of some.

45:10 Now that's probably the most unique thing I've seen compared to other facilities I've watched documentaries on. That the commander actually lives on the premises. I suppose it makes the most sense if Mexico is as corrupt and dangerous as it's made out to be; I'm sure there is a lot of people in the free world that would like a prison employee dead. Much respect goes out to that officer for essentially living at his place of work; I don't think I couldn't have that kind of commitment to my job especially if it was that difficult.

Lol right but aye they can't control the dogs movements or thoughts all the time. It will always get to a certain point that they can handle the dogs. Haha you are correct tho I'm not here to talk bad or make you feel dumb. I'm here agreeing with you thank you have a great time watching this documentary.

I agree. It’s a concentration camp. The fact that one man had been there 38 years without being tried. Just shows you what punishment really is. The Arizona Sheriff is pretty bad too, but I actually agree with his approach. If it’s ok for the men and women of our military to sleep in 120°f heat, it should be ok for the worst of the worst.

Who the fuck told you that??? They are working an eight hour shift, and they get to go home, have the authority over those they watch, and also the opportunity to kill any of the prisoners if they really want to. Doing life sentences???they get to mate, they can choose what to eat, they get good pay, and the best benefits compare to many other jobs. Good medical insurance, sick days, vacation days with pay. And many other goodies. Life sentence is when you died in prison, in a small cell either by yourself, or smelling some other man's farts. When you family die one by one, and when the lights are out and you have to stick your pillow down your throat so no one can hear you crying because someone else killed your son/daughter wife or mother. That is doing a life sentence, don't you ever even consider compare a prisoner to a guard..A guard is a guard, and is respected as such, a prisoner is branded for life sometimes rightly so, and sometimes not. What ever, a guard is a guard. A prisoner is just that a prisoner judged, and branded forever as a parasite of society.
