(i’m boutta tell a story so buckle up buttercups) this is everyone in the arts too. it’s so much pain and you fail constantly. but you can’t give up. you can’t let your dreams fail just because people think you can’t do it, or it’s not a common career. i’m in band, 10th grade, and it’s a real love hate relationship. i have played my instrument (trumpet) since 6th grade, and i started out pretty good. i’m usually a very fast learner, so my teacher kinda stopped teaching me after 6th grade. i just taught myself and others sometimes (we had too many trumpet players so i would be sent out in the hall to teach them how to play). in 8th grade, i started marching band (high school) as the only middle schooler marching. i loved band, but i didn’t think i would go anywhere in life with it (i love bragging about this just to be stupid, but i could hit a c above the staff in that year) 9th grade: we got a new band director at the high school. i was terrified because he was fresh out of college and i thought it would be like my middle school director. the new director was kinda crazy. he got mad at my freshman class EVERY DAY (and i mean yelling), but i kept going. got 3rd chair trumpet (1st part) at all county band that year- as a freshman. if you don’t get it yet, i was good. but, i was fed up with the new director and just how un-fun he made band. i was going to quit. i was a day away from when i was going to switch out of band as a whole, when i stopped. i was at youth group (before it started for music rehearsal), and i started BAWLING. i couldn’t do life without band, the feeling of doing something you love is insane and it makes you just so happy. i realized that you can’t let other people get in the way of something you were born to do. i got braces a few days after the all county audition, and i was screwed. started crying a bunch because i couldn’t play with the sound i could before, but i kept going. i ended up winning outstanding freshman (in band) that year, and i could play good again! 10th grade (now): i have recently expanded my range since getting braces, i’m a section leader and on leadership in my band, i switched to mellophone for marching band, and i am so sad to see so many people leave band because of our man-baby director, but i know i can’t leave because i need band. just like people need other things they like to do, that’s why i never bash on people for liking certain things, or wanting to be an actor, ballerina, artist, interior designer, etc. i know what it’s like when you live without something you love. thanks for listening to my ted talk lol and i hope you understand how much these things mean to some people now 🫶

How beautiful! Thank you for sharing that. That’s exactly how I feel about teaching. Being a teacher in the country where I grew up was an embarrassment. My dad was very angry when he found out I wanted to be a teacher. To put this into perspective, my older sister is a pediatrician head of department in a large hospital in Miami and my younger sister is a dermatologist with her own prestigious practice before she was 35. I just HAD to teach. I tried accounting for one year and each day felt hopeless. When I finally decided to give myself to teaching I felt like I was walking on clouds! It was like a dream! I’m still doing it 25 years later. I can’t believe how fortunate I am that I get to do this every day! I feel guilty to get paid for something that gives me so much joy! Follow your dreams!!!

Obviously I LOVE dance but it's so hard and painful. I don't go to a studio, but rather a single mom of three kids started a few small dance classes and she is so sweet and dedicated to making sure we won't have to go through the toxic side of the dance industry. All of this to say, I'm so grateful she is helping me do what I love, even if its REALLY REALLY HARD!!!!

I was four and dancing at the level of someone who was around 6, my teacher was awesome and said that my parents should keep me going so I could compete, I’m 13 now, and I was pulled out when I turned five, over the years I gained some sort of illness (never went to a doctor), but my body can’t actually do much physical activity without giving in, needless to say, I cannot dance anymore.
