Dear Drummers and Friends
I am especially delighted to be bringing you this brand new videocast release - a particularly poignant one for me that I must say was an absolute joy to make!
Neither Allan Holdsworth’s name, nor his unique and extraordinary music need any introduction from me. When I first got to jam with him in 1979, I had never before experienced such a level of musical connection with anyone as I did with him, and simply had no notion of how impactful, expanding and rewarding it could be to be given total liberty to create within someone else’s music. It opened up a vault of otherwise hidden creativity in me, after which nothing was ever the same again!
I have been asked repeatedly that I devote a videocast on my work with Allan and, as Oscar Wilde once said, “I can resist anything except temptation”! It was indeed irresistible, and probably the hardest thing was trying to keep it to a reasonable length… It ended up being a bumper production, running in at just over an hour and a half!
Throughout the course of the videocast, I give contextual background to the tracks themselves, and insight into the methodology I employed towards developing a drum approach and contribution to five of Allan’s compositions. They are selected from the albums IOU, Atavachron and Sand all recorded back in the early to mid 1980s. I formed abbreviated versions of the chosen pieces, and played along to them, recalling my beats from back in the day as if it was yesterday. I give a breakdown and analysis of the key beats I chose to lay down and explain my musical intention behind them.
For the many fans of my brother Allan and his music, I have included 15+ minutes of previously unreleased bonus footage from my archives of Allan’s band with Steve Hunt, Skuli Sverrisson and myself on the road, and selected performance footage from 1992 and 1993.
I sincerely hope you will enjoy it, and even more so that it inspires you to grab the drum guide PDFs, download the drum-less mixes of the various songs (with or without click) and get creative on the tracks yourself.

I was in central park late afternoon yesterday sitting on a bench, I looked at the sky and trees and felt the temperature go down as the sun was setting. I zipped up my jacket and I immediately felt compelled to type in Unmerry Go Round on my phone and listened to all 14 minutes of it at full volume. I've heard it many times but now that he's gone I appreciate the reverence in your solo as a profound movement in that concerto even more. It has more meaning than ever. It was a full journey as I sat there. It was solemn when it was over ,I took off my headphones and looked around the park and I realized you where just part of the scenery. I told Allan that as well. I remember how at the end of Mr Berwell you would take off into the ethos as I traveled on the streets of NY. I wore out all my Allan cassettes and replaced them several times.

I'm 55. Allan Holdsworth's music travelled with me since I first heard Tokyo Dream and saw him live in the mid 80's and it continued until his heart breaking death (although of course, I listen to him everyday). Thanks so much for this video Gary and your brothership with Allan comes across in your words and music with him and solo.

Saw Allen and you with IOU in Philadelphia back in the 80s, sat at a table right in the front row in front of Allen. As a guitar player, I came to basically see him, but I remember being so captivated with your drumming, I couldn't take my eyes off of you, and was getting dizzy looking back and forth between you and Allen. When I came home, I told my drummer that you had to be the most lyrical and creative drummer I had seen to date. Since then, you are the drummer I enjoy listening to the most, and your keyboard work is unreal too.

One of the most gifted musicians I have ever seen. Way back in the 80's a Modern Drummer cover story, '86 Frankfurt live with Allan Holdsworth, almost levitating with Level 42, ripping it up with John McLaughlin against and together with Ranjit Barot (a major force himself). I still remember that day clearly in my mind when I dropped the needle of my record player on that record and as I began listening along with my musical brother we looked at each other in disbelief and our jaws dropped to the floor. Up to this day I have not recovered from that and the musical piece (Non-Brewed Condiment) was what you just played at 3:10 min of this video. Thanks for the inspiration Gary!

I love ATAVACHRON! And, yes it's true. I've known even girls to like it! But seriously, talk about an underrated and little-known gem of an album. And "Mr. Berwell."
