An artist without a gallery is a chef without a restaurant or a musician without a theatre. But what exactly does a gallerist do all day and where do they find artists, and how do they find clients, and moving artwork, and writing about art, and visiting artists' studios, and phew!... it's a delicate juggling act all in the service of artwork and its power to reach us.
In this episode we visit Thomas McCormick Gallery to see how a gallery operates and works with artists.

You can''t freinds with someone who controls your livelyhood. He treats her like he's her boss. And becasue he provides her money for products, he kind of is. He's smarmy and gross. He's not alone in this and it isn't a criticism of him only. It's how most the art market works.

@@Caleb_Sexton Yes, but that is what he does for living. As an artist one still hawe the opportunity to make art beside those customer orders that are your "full time regulary job" and which brings in money, but art made by genuine passion can still be made outside that timeframe. Also i think that the bigger one get as an artist and become more economycaly independent that will also give a lot more freedom compared to this situation where one are more or less locked into the room with one or two single regular customers that sits on the money and need to sell what he's customers ask for. At least i hope so. (as an artisan maker my self i usualy are in that situation that a customer has a very specific whish and i hawe to make it up to the general spec, but i also make my entierly own creations that may or may not sell, but i can amke them out of passion and not just for livinghood once the expenses are payed by those customers work, i can also introduce things i think the customers would be interested in and come to a solution with the customer both parts are happy with (usualy about bringing down the production cost and other practical things i hawe to explain the limitations, but also opportunities the customers may not see at first)).(Sorry for my English, it is not my native language)

Hearing Tom just mention that he knew and worked with Julian's dad kinda widened my entire perspective. Like I knew that Julian's dad did conservation and passed it down, but going from Julian talking about his own dad and what he learned from him and everything to having another person mention him as well just makes this mythical person seem even more grounded in reality while at the same time, making them seem more esteemed and revered.

Fascinating to see that Anna uses Nova Color paint. As a muralist working in extreme conditions (on stuccoed walls in the Caribbean sun), that brand is the only one that holds up to the conditions. Her use of the same brand is a validation of my choices…especially since I have to order and have it shipped to my country of residence. Thank you for this video…so much beauty and information!

Yes! Her Purdy brushes too. I'm freezing the video and checking off all the materials that I use. Nova Color is always my first choice, even when painting on canvas. Though that shipping is crushing these days. I can only imagine international rates.

Everyone has heard a story about finding a lost or unknown masterpiece at a flea market, but I’m fascinated by Thomas’ description of finding a completely unknown artist (living or through their descendants), and introducing their art and legacy to the world. Hard to imagine how Thomas can know when he finds it, but sounds like his instinct has served him well.

I do just what Thomas said....I sign the front of my paintings, I sign the back, put my town/state, and I title the piece. I also include this information: oil/acrylic, varnish or not, and the dimensions of the painting. When I become famous (:D), whoever has my pieces will know a lot about them!

This episode really took me back to my college days and the time I spent in art school; deeply nostalgic and even bittersweet. Bittersweet because it made me wonder about career roads not taken, because life got in the way and took me in a different direction, away from the art that I loved. I am trying to get back to it...who knows what dreams may come. Thank you Julian and crew for another illuminating and inspiring episode of this wonderful series.

As someone who doesn't really like them, it's mostly a "first impression" thing in my case... At first glance, it looks just very childish, the infamous "a child could do it" type of immature thought. BUT I can also tell there's a lot more to it, it's not just "haha let me paint random shapes of colors and sell it for a ton of money". I simply don't know enough about her thought process and technical process to understand the subtilities. Some of the painting were actual pretty nice and the overlapping colors are interesting though ;) In the end, some of us can not like it but still respect both the artist and her art and *try* to see why others like it

I relate to Anna’s paintings because the quilt world has very modern quilts designs and art quilts that are unreal. It is such a creative project to paint, to quilt. It is thought of colors, shapes, values, and placements that make a painting sing as it does with quilts. Thank you for sharing this! It is very inspiring. When looking at her paintings I had flashes of designing very modern quilts.

So pleased to hear the gallery owner give some love to us so called fly over state artists. Im still a relatively youngish professional artist. Sometimes I do think about the distant future. Will anyone care about my work in a hundred years? Or will my great grandchildren be pawning it off for pennies for ppl to hang behind their bathroom doors? One of my life goals has been to get at least one of my pieces in a museum. not b/c I care about fame but just so I know that at least one part of me, one piece of me will survive.
