Max has said that he’s become close to Alonso over the past year and that Fernando has been mentoring him…when asked who he looked up to, he said Fernando. I used to think Alonso wanted Max to win because he wanted Lewis to lose, but Alonso has really gone the Seb route and instead of doing the Old School thing where the older champions keep their secrets close to the vest and psych out their younger teammates, instead they mentor and look after them. It’s beautiful to see and that’s at least one new era change I’m happy with.

It's so heartwarming to finally see Max as a WDC, and Checo in a team where he's valued, appreciated... Even when some of us were doubting at times. @@vijayshelke6565 What an absurd thing to say. Both Max and Checo had 3 DNFs this season. Any of them would have been enough to lose RB the constructor's title. You can't just pick one like that.
@antares3652 жыл бұрын
I think if you consider the whole year it was Checo's first half what cost the constructors' in the end. At least he improved his confidence with the car on the second half, that increases RB's chances to win constructors' next year.
@maddogUK692 жыл бұрын
@@antares365 I disagree. If you look at the first half of the year (up to and including Hungary) Checo finished outside the top 5 on four occasions, including 1 DNF. He scored 104 from the first 11 races. In the second half of the year, he finished outside the top 5 on five occasions, including 2 DNFs and scored 84 points. If Bottas hadn't played destruction derby at Hungary, RB would have had likely gained enough extra points from that single race to have settled both the driver and constructor titles in their favour before Abu Dhabi. My point is that I don't see how you can possibly point at any one single event and say "that's what cost them the title". There were simply too many variables in play.

@@broheme8922 Partially, however Max hardly lost any points there except for the DNF's. Those and some lucky moments for Lewis (red flag in Imola is a major one for example) made it so close in the end. This is why I love RBR. There is so much synergy and compassion to each other. The cliché 'One big family' is really true here, but who the hell cares? I would love to see some more of Gianpiero Lambiase, probably the most important person at the paddock for Max. The mechanics screaming 'Come on son!!' shows how much they love their drivers... Albon, fantastic. For those who didn't notice at the other video: Alex was really being the engineer by saying: 'Recharge on please, recharge on!' (right after the yelling). UPDATE: It was GP Lambiase. And then Honda....what a dedication and compassion to each other. Especially bringing the trophy which was meant for Suzuka. The tropies RBR awarded to Tanabe and Yamamoto meant so much to them... I don't think this kind of energy/synergy is seen at their robotic neighbours with all their smashed tables and headphones.....

In Dutch Ziggo end of year interview with Max he told . I only work with Gianpiero, that he will quit if his race engineer does the same. So yes he is very important for him.

I remember in 2019 when Lewis clinched the title, he came on the radio and all he had to say was his favourite pseudo profound platitude "still we rise guys, still we rise," with barely any excitement in his voice. That's what happens when people feel entitled to easy world championships. When Checo was putting on a defensive driving masterclass all Toto and Lewis could do was moan about "dangerous driving," showing off the same entitlement. It eventually made them complacent, and once RBR got its act together, their first impulse was to try and slow them down with spurious bullshit ("flexiwings," lobbying to make pit stops slower, constant moaning about dangerous driving any time there was good wheel to wheel racing etc. etc.). It really showed how insincere they had been all those years of dominating and talking about how they wanted more competition.

It was basically do the opposite of whatever Lewis and Mercedes do. Their pace just wasn’t there. Like what Horner said to Crofty and Brundle, they needed a miracle and the racing gods answered. In order for that luck to work, you need talent and that’s what Max and Checo showed. Checo with the amazing defense and Max never letting up even though that championship was slipping away every lap. He kept the gap within the pit window and that’s what kept Mercedes from boxing Lewis in fear of losing track position. Let’s hope 2022 will give us another great season and hopefully more teams and drivers can contend for the chip.

God that last lap gives me chills. I work in as a junior doctor in an A&E department and I managed to convince the admin staff to play the Abu Dhabi race on the waiting room TV so that I could catch glimpses of it as I worked (with my orange 33 t-shirt under my scrubs), and on that last lap we all just paused - staff and patients - to watch. It was captivating. I had a cringe moment when I got a laugh and a small cheer from the patients when I momentarily forgot my professionalism and yelled when Max won. Still, I’m so glad I saw that last lap live and I still get chills and a buzz when I see the replay. I can’t imagine carrying so many people’s hopes and dreams on my shoulders, yet Max always seems so chill and unfazed. He’s one in a billion. And Checo - so selfless, a huge team player, and a model of sportsmanship. He’s indeed a legend. Hearing Alex’s voice first over the radio after Max’s win was such a magical moment. I wish Alex well. He deserves more recognition and success.
