I believe that the intent of the surface of 13a is to read AA as the Automobile Association rather than Alcoholics Anonymous as it mentions "by the road", but this is an incredibly minor point which I only bring up because in the US the equivalent motoring organisation is the AAA. As always a great solve with fantastic explanations.

Yes, agreed, I think I went down the wrong track by misreading invention as intervention

I took the surface read of "AA invention" to mean the creation of AA batteries! 😄

Why does "I have the same" equal "snap"?

You say snap in the card game when two cards match.

@@selenasilverstep7981 Snap is a children's card game from about 158 years ago which would have started by using a standard deck of 52 playing cards (or 54, including jokers). As of today, there are 272 different versions listed on Board Game Geek alone (presuming no duplicates), the first commercially-published version of which was presumably in 1905 by Milton Bradley, featuring 40 colour lithographed cards depicting comical scenes. The term "Snap!" has long been in many people's general vocabulary as a substitute for the phrase "Ha, look! I have the same [whatever] as you!" or "Hey, we have the same thing! How about that..." or any phrase to that effect.
