In this video I thought it would be useful to run through the full set-up for the road UST tubeless system that I'm using. From mounting and removing a tyre, to adding sealant and correctly inflating to ensure the tyre is mounted correctly, the goal was to get it licked in 10 minutes and to show just how easy it is now, with a few tips and tricks along the way.
I've actually made a longer video on road tubeless that delves into my full backstory and past experiences (good and bad......actually it was mainly bad) so if you're anything like me you may have some reservations about road tubeless that need overcoming.
Are you running road tubeless? Let me know how you're getting on and any other areas of cycling I may be able to help with.
Thanks for watching. Ride safe and enjoy!
Mike

Thanks SO Much for the video - it was VERY easy to follow & understand. Just finished my first Setup with help from LBS tech to get Conti 5000TL on the rim - Mavic Ksyrium - my hands / fingers still hurt from trying yesterday.....I could not get the final 4-6" of 2nd bead on the rim, even with Tire Lever(s) - I left the Tires almost on where I got stuck overnight ...so today LBS Tech got one done in less than 5 mins, the 2nd took 2x that. Anyway, I picked up the Video after your mounting and followed each step. BTW - getting the Mavic tubeless tires off was straightforward - both beads at same time with a little tire lever help. Again, thanks for video guidance.

Okay update to my last post I have completed (sans sealant) getting the old tire off and putting the new one on. The video helped with getting it off and on. This went soooo much better than my "first" time. thanks

Just went tubeless around 4 months ago. I now understand why some people are saying the hell with it and going back to tubes. Just not ready for prime time in my opinion. Fine so long as everything is fine. Get a hole that is too big for sealant, good luck!

That is one of the best instructional videos I think I have ever seen! The quality is phenomenal, and I love the footage...spectacular! Too bad Mavic has sold out of their 62mm special edition TDF Comete's :(

Been using mavic cosmic 40mm carbon ust now for 4 months no problems, no punctures have used them for about 1000 miles including 186 miles across Wales in a day on harsh British roads epic wheels can't recommend them enough 👍🚴‍♂️

I'm using road tubeless with Hed Jet Black 6 and 9 wheels. Schwalbe Pro One tubeless 25s are my choice of tire. Mounting required the use of plastic tire levers. I use Orange Sealant. If I get a puncture that the sealant won't seal, I use a plug system that is similar to the plug for a car tire only much smaller. The plug is sealed using a bit of rubber vulcanizing cement. Sealing with a plug mitigates needing to place an inner tube inside a tire that was difficult to mount to begin with. Also, using a plug enables the tire to be pumped to pressures as when the tire was new.

Last time I checked those Hed Jet Blacks aren't listed as tubeless compatible. But according to you they seem to work fine?

thanks for the vid - it really helped me with the set up my new Cosmic Pro Carbon SL UST wheelset. I'm using the Mavic sealant that came with the wheelset - I'm hoping the sealant doesn't dry out too quickly as mentioned in other comments. Living in the Arizona desert - I guess I'm about to find out!

The one thing I noticed is that he didn't have the "joy" of breaking loose the bead after the tire has been in place for 6 months. That is I believe the most difficult part as getting one side broken free didn't seem so bad but the other side kept "flexing" and wouldn't break free. Once free it wasn't quite so bad. I get to experience the joy again as my Yskion tire tread is now toast (probably should have changed it earlier). We'll see how easy this second tire is (did the other back in January)

Hi Mike, awesome videos in general. The purest I have seen on the web so far. But noticed that within Europe it is mainly the classic climbs which are featured. I lived in the alpes myself, and loved it. In the last year's I have been visiting the North of Spain, and figured out the beauty of this area. Might be worth to extend your listing, Basque Country, Cantabria, Asturias,... - Climbs: Los Machucos, Lunada, Lagos de Covadonga, Angliru, Monte Oiz, ... Keep on doing what you do, great inspiration.

Yo estoy usando los ksyrium elite ust y son una maravilla, lo único malo son las llantas que se forman burbujas en la capa de rodadura después de pinchar y sellar. Y destruye la llanta al reventar

Hi Mike, thanks for a great video. How did you find cleaning the inside of the tire and rim with the Mavic sealant. I have had both good and bad times with cleaning different sealants out of my rim well and out of the tires if I wanted to reuse them. Thanks, Dave

Nice video Mike. Do you hold the wheel flat and shake it on both sides to disperse the sealant to the bead ? Keep the videos coming, you inspired me to ride Pikes Peak last year at the age of 66, didn’t quite make the summit do to high wind. ( I’ll be going back :-)

I just acquired the Mavic Comete 64mm UST wheel system, brand new out the rear inflated fine....however the front , even if the tire was fully locked in, maintained a fast leak. Tested within a tub of water noticed it was leaking thru all the spoke ends....In your opinion, is this a poorly wrapped rim tape ? And if so, is it a matter of removing and re-doing the rim tape ? Appreciate any guidance you can give me. Thanks Rav

My Mavic Yksion UST tubeless tyres developed bubbles on the sidewall before I had reach 600km. Despite admitting that the tyre was now not safe to ride and that this should not happen, Mavic are finding all sorts of reasons for NOT replacing it. Can't help but think that they are getting so many returns that they can't cope. I wonder if these tyres will ever be recalled!! I wouldn't recommend them. I'll be going back to my trusty Continentals.

Thanks for the video. I have been running tubeless for the past 18 months using 28 and 32 MM tires. Really enjoy the ride and ability to not have punctures. I have had a couple of incidents where I had massive slashes that that were too much for the sealant to close the hole. For my set of Enve disc wheels I do have problems getting the tire off and on. No way I can get the tire off and then back on strictly by hand. I have tried 3 different tire brands (not Mavic yet) and have the same problem. My bike mechanic also has issues with my wheels although not to the same level as I experience. The Enve's definitely are not as easy to change tires and setup as the Mavic wheels you are using. My Enve wheels ride great but seem to be high maintenance. Is it the combination of the Mavic rim design and Mavic tire that make it so much easier to change/set-up? Does the Mavic tire brand you are using come in a size 28?

I've tried tubeless setups for 25C tires from a few different companies, all making claims of having better sealant and designs but I've had at least half a dozen punctures and not one has sealed the hole at an acceptable pressure that would allow me to continue to ride the bike, I had to stop and put a tube in and deal with a terrible mess of sealant all over me. The last time I bought tires I spent $90 per tire and another $30 for a bottle of sealant and I didn't even get 100 miles before I flatted on some chipseal coated road. I'd rather change a tube now and not get into that mess, so I'm done with tubeless for road, however, I have had no problems with 35C tires on my cross bike which I run at low pressures.

The issue I have with tubeless is how quickly the sealant dries out and needs replacing. Feels like too much maintenance.

Different sealants dry out (or don't) at different rates. FWIW I re-commissioned my old Trek Domane as a commuter couple of weeks back, putting on a new set of Specialized S-Works Turbo 2Bliss tyres, As part of that I had to take off an old Hutchison Fusion 2 tubeless tyre from a rear wheel I had - last used 4 years ago, the sealant (Stans) in that had been in for about 6-9 months prior to that - sealant was still liquid, slightly dis-coloured but fluid. No idea how well it would seal after all that time but it just took a wipe around with a cloth to get the rim looking good as new - the tyre had no clumps or dried patches and i'd have been happy to re-use with just a top-up. Which sealants have you had issues with if you don't mind me asking ?
@adriansmith38
@adriansmith38 6 жыл бұрын
I've also been using Stans. I do wonder if it's caused by the unusually hot weather we've been having. Also tried Finish-Line, but a lot of reviews are not all that good for it. There general view is that regular top-ups are needed?

Just got the Mavic UST tire and wheel and it came with tubes installed. It seems impossible to unseat the bead of the tire from the rim. I think I will need to cut the tire off. I have ridden for 40 years and I am familiar with tubeless from mountain biking, but this is ridiculous! A puncture on the road would mean a long walk home or a call for a sag. This feels like a huge fail to me.
