Newgate Prison was a prison at the corner of Newgate Street and Old Bailey Street just inside the City of London, England, originally at the site of Newgate, a gate in the Roman London Wall. Built in the 12th century and demolished in 1904, the prison was extended and rebuilt many times, and remained in use for over 700 years, from 1188 to 1902.
@robnewman6101
@robnewman6101 Ай бұрын
In the late 18th century, executions by hanging were moved here from the Tyburn gallows. These took place on the public street in front of the prison, drawing crowds until 1868, when they were moved into the prison. For much of its history, a succession of criminal courtrooms were attached to the prison, commonly referred to as the "Old Bailey". The present Old Bailey (officially, Central Criminal Court) now occupies much of the site of the prison.

When so many 'manor houses' fell out of favor or went the way of disrepair how is it that Audley End House survived? How did it get the 2nd 1/2 of its name: "End"? 5:40 -- I don't think I completely understand. So, are you saying that the flat 'grass' area is actually a covered over lake? Please explain further. Interesting that the 'gathering' room was called a saloon. In America that's a 19th bar to us. I would have thought that the gathering room or saloon would have been called a salon. Thank for sharing a great video. It puts a lot of things in perspective.
@DodiTov
@DodiTov 4 жыл бұрын
First point, a saloon is the English pronunciation for the French word salon. Indeed, once you take the alcohol away, the American saloon was/is a gathering spot for community much as a family gathers in the "living room". At that point in time, the French and the English were at odds with one another, so the English would use "French" with an English twist. At 5:40, it isn't clear, but there is a river running through the grounds. The previous owner widened it into a fake lake without damming up the river. Landscaping does strange things like that. The "gentle rolling hills" were NOT all that gentle until the grass was planted in a garden plan. And finally; the "end" designation of an English manor simply designated that it was the end of the road, much like a cul-de-sac or "circle" in American subdivision street names. It doesn't have anything to do with the history of the house, it's merely a geography "thing."

Dear Maddie, you wave your arms about so often I can't help wondering if you end up hitting a lot of people. If it's caffeine that's pushing you over the edge perhaps you should consider giving it up. I mean, your burlesque movements are really offputting; they don't read enthusiasm or cuteness, they are a genuine distraction. Why not try poise, there will definitely be less chance of you accidentally breaking something. I'm not trying to hurt your feelings, I'm being honest and hopefully helpful.
