Glen, I’m usually in your kitchen, but the thumbnail with a Mooney caught my eye. Grew up in a 1958 Mooney, that I helped rebuild when I was very small…standing on toes to reach those low wings with airplane dope and two part epoxy.

Mike and Dave are just good dudes. Am glad Dynon has them. I stepped up to a Dynon 7” Classic EFIS from a GRT Mini, when it came in my current plane. I liked it so much, that when installing ADSB, I decided to go full Dynon everything- 10” HDX, Radio, Intercom, Xponder, GPS, 2-axis autopilot, external control panels, etc. I’m an A&P, not an avionics tech. But their architecture, using dedicated serial bus and separate Skyview Network for modules connections is logical. Their pre-assembled harnesses are well priced and further simplify installation. And you can reach tech support via email or phone. The same cannot be said for some of the competition.

My A&P-AI said he wasn’t too excited about the connectors - suggest Dynon look at higher quality aircraft wire connectors. I have a two screen Dynon HDX Skyview which I am happy with - screens are great quality and system is easy to use.

A&Ps are trained on classic/traditional aircraft systems and parts. They are also trained as generalists across structures, engines, etc. They are not electronics experts and are not necessarily knowledgeable about modern items (because the training and the aircraft they support are mostly rooted in older technologies). If you look at Dynon's wiring and compare that to many others, you'll see that it is better than most. They comply with modern standards for wiring & connectors, they have good attention to detail regarding EMI/RFI, and support their products well. [I say this as an IT professional that built his own aircraft, including designing & installing the electrical system. I went with a non-Dynon avionics solution and found the quality to be inferior to Dynon's products]

It's been so painful to see how slow their AP certification process has been. So many people who would love a Dynon system for their Mooney etc, but are pretty much forced to go Garmin due to the unbeatable GFC500. How does Garmin cram through so many aircraft models through the STC process. Can't be just a headcount issue?

I agree, I’d love to put a Dynon system in my J, but waiting on the autopilot approval, 3 years in progress. I helped my local avionics shop put in a 2 panel system in a C182 a couple years ago and am a fan of Dynon. PLEASE agent the Mooney AP done!

No one ever got fired for buying Garmin
@GlensHangar
@GlensHangar 6 ай бұрын
That's a great saying - but for most aircraft owners the cost of Garmin is beyond reach. When I was choosing what to put in MVU, I couldn't get a straight answer on even basic costs from Garmin, their dealers, or installers - their attitude was that I needed to write a blank cheque and take what comes. Garmin's business model on pricing was very opaque. Dynon was upfront about what was needed for the system I was building, and what the costs were going to be; there were zero surprises or cost overruns. I didn't have to talk to three layers of dealers and sales people to make it happen. On a flight use basis, I've flown with both Garmin and Dynon systems, and the layout of Dynon menus, and physical knobs and buttons made more sense to me.

@GlensHangar Yep I understand your frustration. I have done a few planes, Ovation3, Mirage in Garmin PRE WUHAN. Life was easier back then. I just got a solid quote for a gtn 750, 2xgi275 and a gtx345. But I do understand your experience. Resale will take a hit, it's a bummer garmin owns the mkt but buyers will react.
@noelwade
@noelwade 6 ай бұрын
Garmin is feature-rich, but in addition to the cost issues that Glen mentions they are also in some ways handcuffed by their long product legacy. They have a specific approach to UI and features/functions that they set up with earlier products, and for consistency purposes they must largely follow that pattern in future products. This is great for people who fly a succession of aircraft with Garmins installed in them, but it does limit their ability to innovate or alter their approach. I know good people at both companies, but Dynon is a more-nimble organization that's been free to experiment and take a different approach to some of their products and the user experience. Everyone has their own preferences, but many folks find Dynon's UI/UX more intuitive. The good news is, there seems to be space in the market for both companies; and both can thrive in different market segments. My next plane's getting a Dynon, though! 🙂

@@GlensHangarI’m absolutely with you on this. Dynon sales and tech support people are reachable, relatable and helpful. Their electronic network conventions are logical and straightforward. I’ve only performed Dynon installations but when I’ve reviewed Garmin wiring diagrams, I’ve seen notes about adding external resistors, that apparently Dynon integrates internally and at least once, grounding instruction was ambiguous. I’ve heard from multiple others, their tech support is only for avionics shops who have a retail relationship with them- not aircraft owners who do their own work. I understand why they have chosen that business model; I also understand, I am not their focus customer. With Dynon, I am.
