Well, here I am, 6 years late to the party and I have just a few things to add. First of all, every single member of this fine marching band should hold their heads high and be proud of their awesome show. They are great ambassadors for the USA and especially Ohio. The insane amount of effort, skill and coordination, is breath taking. I have no idea how they learn so many individual moves and remember them and, at the same time play their instruments. I am lost for words. Thank you from the UK.

Yeah OSU, and US marching bands in general, are MUCH better than the ones we have in Canada. The last college football game I was at (Western vs Guelph?) the Mustangs marching band didn't even march. They just goofed around in the stands and played perhaps 2-3 minutes the whole game.

@@GoWestYoungMan I agree. There is no comparison. They are in different universes. In terms of enthusiasm US college marching bands are orders of magnitude higher.
@TS-ev1bl3 жыл бұрын
@@GoWestYoungMan At many schools the marching band was formed and exists only to support the football team, but OSU's marching band is actually older than the football team and has always been a thing unto itself. The OSUMB grew out of the university fife and drum corps that was formed to march with the school's ROTC cadets in the late 1870s. 140+ years after they were formed, "THE" OSUMB still maintains their military brass and percussion roots. The first year for the football team wasn't until 1890, and it was a small, inauspicious first several years playing against local schools at city parks, etc. The MB performed at an OSU football game for the first time in 1899.

One of my co-workers was in the OSUMB from '76 - '80. He said it was great getting to go to a different bowl each of his four years (Orange, Sugar, Gator, Rose), which was a new thing in the Big Ten. Prior to 1975 in the Big Ten it was the Rose Bowl or nothing, and until '71/'72 the "No Repeat" rule prevented any Big Team team from going even to the RB if they had gone the year before. Even if you were undefeated and won the Big Ten, if you went to the RB the year before, you stayed home. Those were also the days of the "no more than three times on TV in two seasons" rule. How times have changed.

@trombone1134 жыл бұрын
Ok. And rightfully so. The NFL has been trying to get them to like our football for years. It is basically just an annual spectacle. That isn't likely to change. Anymore than we will all stop work at 4pm for tea. Just not gonna happen. When in Saudi Arabia in the Marine Corps working with the British 8th Army, our CO was working with everyone on something as their unit commander was getting ever more nervous. Our CO thought he needed to make a head call (go to the bathroom). No, it was 5 minutes after 4pm. It was tea time!! A hell of a way to fight a war. Just different cultures and ways of living.

I'm in the UK, and can assure you that the audience will have enjoyed the show very much, but American football and marching bands just aren't our culture. But you should hear us go f'ing mental at a rugby match, which the US couldn't give a shit about. All that being said, my dad would have enjoyed this very much. The problem was they put the Band on before the game, rather than at half time. At Ohio State, everyone knows to be in their seats 20 minutes before kick off to see the Band come in. Apparently that word did not get around in the UK. Why the NFL didn't have them play at halftime, I'll never know.

@mysteriousj30194 жыл бұрын
Short answer: Yes, they do something of the sort before every game, as well as during halftime. The Ohio State University Marching Band has their own youtube channel. You can look up the shows they put on before and during American Football games. They put on a small pre-game show and perform the national anthem before the games start, and put on a differently themed show every week for halftime. I highly reccomend going and watching some of the stuff on their channel. Not to say anything bad about the Wembley crowd here because they were great, but when you watch some of the stuff they put on at their home stadium in front of over 100,000 fans, the feel you get is different. Ohio State also has an Athletic Band, which is separate from the marching band and does shows for basketball, hockey, and other sport events. The OSU Marching Band also takes part in parades, shows, and other events around the country. They also regularly do shows at high schools around Ohio. You can find these on youtube, though they are a bit more difficult to find.
