Also check out the Tascam DR-100, as a slightly cheaper alternative to the H4n. (Never used it, but on paper it looks good.) I'm happy with my Azden mic for the price. I've used this mic and recorder on literally hundreds of shoots now-in my last job, on freelance projects, for Indy Mogul-and they hold up well. (Although, it's too easy to break the built-in mic on the Zoom when you accidentally drop it. Mic still works, but it's bent.)

I believe KZbin plays your video in its native resolution. (No need to show extra frames if it doesn't have to.) I usually edit in 720p24, and encode as an H.264 .mov file. For Indy Mogul episodes, 1.5Mbps seems to look fine, but keeps the file size small for quick buffering. When I need higher quality, I encode around 10Mbps. (For reference, television stations usually want 10-15Mbps.)

Are you referring to "infinity focus"-focusing on the horizon, or "deep focus," where everything in the frame-close and far-is sharp? Filmmakers argue about the aesthetic of shallow depth of field, or "bokeh." Some like a blurry background; some think it's cliche. There's a place for both, in my opinion, and a lens like mine (with an f/1.4 aperture) is cool because you have the freedom to shoot wide open for shallow focus, or close down the lens for deep focus.

Yeah, those are also great options. My mic (Azden SGM-1X) includes a 1/4" screw hole (tripod-mount-sized) on the shock mount, so for me, screwing onto a broom pole is the easiest solution. But not all mics are equipped with the same mounting hardware, and there are lots of alternative ways to accomplish this.

Yeah, Indy Mogul is my primary job, but I also do the occasional freelance video gig. I'm friends with Erik Beck and Justin Johnson, so they recommended me when they left. That's why it's important to befriend like-minded filmmakers and share your work. You never know who may have an awesome opportunity for you.

Thanks Dave! I'm embarrassed to say that when I flew to L.A. to shoot a video with William Shatner, I simply taped a mic to a broom pole. He's a chill guy, though, and seemed genuinely intrigued by all my low-budget, DIY production techniques.

I use Final Cut Pro X currently, having used Adobe Premiere then FCP7 in the past. It has several flaws-it's still buggy-but I love the keyboard shortcuts and time-saving features like audio synchronization. I'm a much faster editor now that I'm using FCPX.

Different, maybe "better" for some, but not others. I like the GH2 because it has a lot of video-friendly features, like a flip-out LCD, and the cost is much lower, but the 5D's bigger sensor means better image quality.

There's a place for both sounds, but it's better to record clean audio. (You can always add noise and echo, to establish a specific sound, but it's hard to remove them.)

A lot of people like the Rode VideoMic ($150). Mogulers, any inexpensive shotgun mic suggestions for tofuninja? (My Azden SGM-1X is $180.)

griffin, here are some ideas for future discussion: 1. racking focus back and forth multiple times in one continuous shot. 2. camera stabilization that allows you to maintain control of the camera 3. your workflow in post 4. beard grooming tips I know a lot of this stuff might sound redundant because many people cover it, but I am very interested in your approach to stuff.

Yeah. I totally dropped the ball when I tried getting into this world. Sure the effects can be great. Same with choreography in fights. But trying to sell a punch with a weak thump can totally kill videos. Not only that but dialog completely gets lost in all the noise the on board picks up. But with everyone's help I think I'm ready to move onto the next step.

I like that "poor man" car sequence idea. (What we film makers can get away with!!) You mention some of the spot sound effects in film. Fairly easy to do on a timeline. When I made a Super 8mm film in the 80's, the 200+ spot effects were individually recorded on perforated magnetic tape, spliced in one by one and mechanically synced to film on a flatbed editor!! **I've now posted this digital transfer to my channel if anyone wants to take a look

If youre using that one you recommend for your shoots, then I do think the $30 is completely justified. However that 100 dollars less is enticing. I guess now I have some research and decision making to get to. Thank you both, I hope I can join everyone in the fun of video making too.

Ive definitely learned that audio is a big part of shorts. It just doesnt seem to sell anything when I've tried using sounds straight off my camera's on board mic. But these boom mic's are so expensive. Do you have a recommendation for an entry level shotgun mic? Thank you.

Hello Griffin. I want to know what is the playback framerate of KZbin? Is it 24, 30 or dynamically both. So if I record at 60 then slow it down to 24 in post will youtube's upload conversion make it 30? Also which video format, codec and bitrate do you upload in for 720p video?

Thankyou so much for your quick response. I had tried googling to find out, but in the forums I found no one really knew the answer. Keep up the great work, this show is really informative.

Griffen, I have to say, you've really turned around IndyMogul for me personally. I thought with the BFX gone, IndyMogul just wouldn't cut it. It's now my favorite channel (even over other YT greats like FreddieW or RWJ). You have a demeanor about you that's friendly and professional. You try your best to reply to comments (even mine), and you have personality. Keep up the great work. I'd love to see more about how you plan / write down your shots / take sheets.

Hey Griffin, have you seen the "bfx weekend extra" boompole episode? I like yours, and zach's is cool too, but i think that one is a bit safer, and it telescopes. you can actually screw the microphone clamp right on because its a 3/8" thread that they put in. Its super easy to make, and I'm very happy with mine.

Dude, this video helps out A LOT. I wanted to make a video with a friend from school, but the camera is not HD, and since I'm only 15, I have a very limited budget to spend on camera's (maybe 60 euros or so) I do have an income, about 24 euros a month. Suggestions?

Would you recommend the audio gear that you're using or is it some other mic that you think works better for the h4n. And did you do anything with the audio in post or did you just leave it as it was? I'm shooting a 30 minute short film soon and need some good audio gear, thinking about getting the azden you're using with a zoom h4n but not sure if it's a long term investment.. Can you please respond and help me? BTW great short ;)
