Behind the Scenes: Firefighter Training Camp

Ever wonder how Forest Fire Management Victoria trains our firefighters to take on the daunting task of suppressing a forest fire? This video shows how our project firefighter (PFF) recruits learn the necessary tactical firefighting and survival skills to prepare them for the summer fire season. FFMVic employs several hundred project firefighters, on a full time basis for a fixed term each year, at more than 80 locations around Victoria. PFFs help suppress bushfires and assist in prevention works, including planned burning. All firefighters are trained comprehensively before being involved in fire operations.

genius.... here's a couple of rakes guys.... now go make a 'mineral earth line' around a fire the size of the nearly ENTIRE EASTERN COAST OF AUSTRALIA. I'm beginning to think these practices need to change as they appear to currently be failing dismally. I don't mean to sound nasty in a time of crisis but I also think it is blatantly obvious that we need to adapt

Hey mate, Mineral Earth Line's (aka Line/s) are still the most effective way to contain fires of all sizes. Practices change all the time in wildland firefighting too, it's all about having a bunch of different tools in your tool box and knowing what to pull out and when. Sometimes retardant lines are created by aircraft instead of Mineral Earth Lines for example, but retardant washes off with rain and wind, whilst sunlight quickly degrades it's effectiveness. Retardant is quick though, compared to machinery tracking 3km per hour, or a hand crew working their way around it. Eventually a mineral earth break must be put around it to get eyes on the ground to inspect the fire line, allow vehicles to enter to assist with blacking out operations, and ensure that once contained it can be monitored closely. *The views here expressed are explicitly my own
