Honestly, one brother seeing the other brother copying everything he's doing and going "Alright, copy THIS!" and setting a really hard challenge is one of the most brotherly interactions in existence

Oh no… the thought of a mini anthropocene-reviewed style essay on tumblr and its deep strange horrors is truly hilarious to me 🤣 It is, after all, a hollowed-out chasm of the internet populated by only those who take a gleeful delight in the fact that their screams into the void are notoriously hard to monetise, a place that is truly the inverse of social media: a place where you will never be seen, but always be heard… not that I frequent it, of course. Nope. Not me. 👀 *sweats nervously*

A lot of the beasties in the deep sea don't have light receptors in the same way that surface creatures do. So they don't always see the same wavelengths actually so if they make sure not to use the light that the creatures can see and react to it's actually perfectly fine for the lil beasties :D

Chemist here, the "Oxygen is grate" only comes from the fact that it is healthy for humans (in moderate concentrations). Oxygen is a extremely reactivate, poisonous, highly corrosive gas. When plants first evolved and introduced it to the atmosphere in large quantities it started a major extinction event that killed +90% of all life, this includes bacteria species! You leave a car outside long enough and it will turn into a pile of red sludge from the oxygen in the air (moisture catalyzes the reaction but it happens anyway).

That exhibit sounds hella cool. If I were to visit, I think I'd actually appreciate it more if they hinted at all the work it takes to make.

Was just at the Monterey Bay Aquarium, I had no idea how complex the deep sea exhibit was.

Come visit! It's an incredible exhibit and this is a great look at just one slice of the many amazing engineering feats at the Monterey exhibits

So either behind the scenes of an art exhibit or on a movie set--which will it be, John? Why little brothers gotta be so feisty?!

I grew up going to the MBA and actually went back there over Christmas when I was visiting. Having seen a number of their rotating exhibits, this deep sea exhibit I felt was not their strongest. This video certainly makes me appreciate the science behind it more, and I'm sure it is super cool for some people, but personally it was not my favorite. There were a lot of videos of animals rather than actual animals, and it felt somewhat small and sparse. I had been excited to see it and I was disappointed that it didn't spark the sense of wonder and learning that I expect from MBA exhibits. But, that was just my own experience and I hope that others find it inspiring!

Great video Hank. I now look forward to John's visit to the Indianapolis zoo to go to their aquarium.
