Sometimes you just watch a video that is so good, and so important, and so poignant. I don’t think there are the words to convey the impact you have on this world, Hank, and how you are part of the very few holding the intellectual fabric of society together. Thank you. These words seem insufficient.

So let me get this right. If the left rails against institutions its for justice and fairness. But when the right does it means they are hitler. I wonder if people like this understand this sentiment is what electrd trump twice. If you guys didnt try so fucking hard to tip the scales he would have faded away.

Maybe it's my bias, but I feel like those of us who got into the internet with the first wave of common access (e.g. AOL) were more disciplined about trusting it. The masses who caught on years later were unprepared to deal with it and took it too seriously. Internet: srs bsns

Also, I am Catholic and I very well know the abuses of the Catholic church, but such was my indoctrination that every time you said the Catholic church back in Luther's time was evil, I felt a frisson of anger directed at you. I think I am beginning to understand how religious indoctrination can influence our actions and thoughts

On the one hand, this was encouraging and motivational. It gave me confidence that being on KZbin is the right place to be to make a difference, that this is the realm of the pamphlets that are shaping our world. On the other hand, I feel dispirited by the reminder of just how fundamentally disadvantaged we are by swimming against that tide of thoughtless populism. One does what one can. At least we’re applying our efforts in the right place.

Lots of people being able to read when Martin Luther was printing his pamphlets wasn't really necessary. I understand that the one or two people who could read, read the pamphlets to large gatherings of people. Also, it seems that Luther was really aiming his words at the institutions and upper classes, as those were the people he needed to influence to change things.

Should you decide to go back and re-render this video, you might consider adding a segment about the Medici Popes; a familial oligarchy who controlled the Catholic Church through the Papacy, starting with Pope Leo X, with his ascension in 1513. They were the culmination (at that time) of a trend of corruption within the Catholic Church that served to ignite the 16th century reformation movement. Nothing happens in a vacuum. With the rise of oligarchies, comes a rise in dissent...so I've read. With an end of oligarchies, comes nothing anyone desires...so warns Aristotle. History is replete with many, many examples...for those who brave enough to read about it. Who knows. I might live long enough to see history repeat itself before my own eyes. Lucky me. May God have mercy on us all... ...and may we none go quietly into the night.

As a practicing witch (ie: Wiccan) I appreciate both the warning about the Reformation's #1 best-seller, and the metaphor of digital media as "casting a spell." Enchantment of the mind and senses, having our wits beguiled, is a very real thing, and its mechanisms are as invisible and mysterious as Magic-- to those who have not been taught to recognize them. Historical context, seeing and recognizing a cycle playing out, is a powerful first step to creating some breathing space, some thinking space, around this tense moment in history. Thank you for this timely dose of practicality, relief and hope.

I worry that there is no way to avoid the tearing apart or the ghettization of a people because history doesn't echo it absolutely repeats. We change the faces and the names, but we still get swept up by the extreme right and we still end up hurting the vulnerable. It feels inevitable. 😢

Hank, to say that the left is full of wealthy people conspiring to make themselves more wealthy and the right is full of misguided poor people is a gross oversimplification. Many right-wing media outlets are funded by right-wing millionaires. The Republican Party since Reagan has been focused on lowering the tax rate for the wealthy! Trump and Elon and various oil groups are all incredibly rich and invested in right-wing politics. I’m not saying the democrats aren’t full of self-interested rich people too, but the right is not just poor people deciding to side with trump, it is billions of dollars in influencing campaigns that make them do so. 14:45

The spot where radio is still good today is sports. The local broadcasts are so much better and for games that are nationally televised (i.e. every NFL game) Radio is the only way to get a local broadcast. As an Eagles fan, Merrill Reese's voice still gives me chills

When you say witches in that context you’re talking about women, and often Jewish women. It wasn’t cutesy witches, for 200 years after the reformation women and often Jewish women were the scapegoat. When you look at the right to abortions being stripped away, and potentially the right to a no fault divorce, you can see how women have started to become the scapegoat once again. Also, it feels strange to say there’s just one truth when there are often so many ways to interpret something.

It's a machine that devours trust Under Capitalism. This moment *cannot* be explained without understanding the complete cutthroat nature of a culture totally internally colonized by markets. We live in an *incredibly* economically violent society, that is the force that poisons everything in our culture, the current state of the American internet is merely a reflection of that reality.

Well, I'm a historian so I may be biased here... but I think that ALL video-essay style KZbin videos should have a bibliography. I particularly like. how Contrapoints also "footnotes" her videos by having the source appear at the top of the screen when she says something that heavily draws form a source.

Your discovery that Martin Luther was a wild character on "social media" reminds me of when I started watching theater performances of operas. I always thought of Opera as this high art, fancy experience, but the classics are all just trashy romance novels set to song. Soap operas are way closer to opera than I ever imagined.

Speaking of developing technology to promote understanding. I am a professional full stack software developer building web app specifically designed to facilitate constructive learning via 6 different yet enter twining strategies. 1) Premise first approach to exploring an idea/argument: a well designed argument or idea will have premises that are most likely to be viewed as agreeable either via supporting bodies of research, or by being commonly agreed upon knowledge. This increases the odds of finding common ground which helps promote connection and understanding. 2) Argument exploration/discovery (fog of war): in an effort to cut back on the habit to discard an argument’s premises due to disagreement with the thesis, users will only be able to see root premises at first and as they agree or disagree with those premises the parent points will unlock (made visible) up until a point of disconnect is discovered. 3) clear waters: once a user finds a point in an argument that they disagree with, they cannot progress beyond that point. This way the point of disconnect is likely to maintain focus over other points that might assume agreement on the point of disconnect. Speaking to the deepest point of disconnect produces the greatest odds for a constructive conversation. And so on. There are of course more strategies I intend to employ, but, despite being paid well, I have enough debt to require me to hold a second job in addition to my full time job alongside being a husband and a dad. Progress on this app, and another I hope will improve our elections, is slow 😅

Important distinction that 25% of *known* animals are beetles. Coleoptera and Lepidoptera have the privilege of being comparatively speaking, more intensively studied. Hymenoptera and Diptera don’t get this, and are serious candidates for being just as, if not more speciose than Coleoptera.
