Chris, congratulations, man! After almost 2 years of searching on KZbin, I finally found what I wanted, and I loved it! Please create many more videos like this. Because it could help many videographers and people who are interested in cinematography. It gave me a vision of how exactly things work, and it is delightful, man. Please do it more! A great thanks and greeting from Berlin :)

I'm a production designer/art director and very happy I saw this video on my homepage. Congratulations and thank you for sharing your work process and ethics. I really want to start designing and compositing scenes, style, mood and shots with video directors and cinematographers and have them rendered for pre-production and production itself. I believe that can help every department to physically see what the end goal is at the beginning of the entire production. Will also make communications, plans, suggestions etc blend in smoothly and encourage speed. I see the difference that can make. I see it. I promise I'm not hallucinating 😅. Currently, I see that there is no to little collab between our professions. I hope that changes soon in our industry 🙏🏾. More Love to you and the team.

After 7 years of doing amateurish work and not progressing in my filmmaking I finally decided to just try thinking like a pro for once instead of being afraid. I realized shooting like this but in a smaller band is possible. I got my tripod, steady cam and a fully kitted out rig. Now I'm just waiting on my lights and trying to learn as much as possible about how.to use them creatively. This video really helped out and I can't believe this is free

I can’t disclose how much we rented all the equipment for. But it was for a fraction of the cost and that is because as a DP you must make good relationships with all the rental equipment houses in your town so that down the line, they will help you out with discounts and supporting your career as a DP.

Hey Chris, I loved this BTS! There's so much valuable information here and it's amazing to see how other people approach their work! Would be nice to see more from the pre-production, when it comes to building the treatment/deck for the music video (since you co-directed this), but overall is one of the best BTS videos on YT I've seen. Would love to see you talk about the budget on this. What was the budget suppose to be? How much was it actually? How much of your OWN money did you spend? How much did each person make? Who made the most? Who did the most work? Asking so when I get in a similar situation, I'd know what to expect.
@bysetuproduction

@chrisajtony Жыл бұрын
As a DP I don’t put my own money into a project. I use to when I first started out but I think as you get more experience and are being hired you shouldn’t do so. Being a cinematographer is also a way of making money/ a job so you have to put the business hat on and try to make money so you’re not in the broke game. Only time I will spend money, will be to buy equipment that I know I can rent to the production to make money. Are usually the producers or directors will help fund project if need be.
@chrisajtony
@chrisajtony Жыл бұрын
Budget was around 12k I believe and the rates for the crew members were standard commercial day rates (12 hour days). This is something you negotiate for your crew when you get hired on. It’s good to respect your crews time and value them especially if they are pros. I’ve worked in the industry for quite awhile doing a lot of different jobs so I got to see the standardizes rates for each job. Let me know if you want a video about budgeting
@25mrkeys
@25mrkeys Жыл бұрын
Yes!! Would LOVE to see a video about budgeting. A lot of people leave that part out. Understood that you don't want anyone in your business, but it's almost impossible to succeed in an area that you've never been in before. Doing all the research in the world won't prepare you for ACTUALLY being in a situation @@chrisajtony

Great content, just a minor correction at 18:33 you said moonlight is not hard. That's a common misconception. Many people think that the moon is a soft source because it is dim. However, the moon (factoring in that it's a small light source) actually is a hard light and casts a hard shadow. You can see this illustrated in experimental night photos by David Mullen, ASC. He took photos at night at a high ISO to demonstrate the light quality of moonlight. You can look up his work on the matter.

such a gnarly take on REDs considering Fincher + Messerschmidt consistently choose them for some of the most low-key films around without crunching the shadows. regardless, solid look mate
@chrisajtony
@chrisajtony 11 ай бұрын
Totally reds are used for big movies obviously but there’s a massive difference in how the cameras handle shadow and highlight data and the mini lf outperformed the reds for sure. I’ve shot probably eight movies with red cameras and I gotta say the mini LF dynamic rage is insane.
