As Theresa May might have reflected as she left Number 10 for the last time, snap elections are risky. (Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News_Subscribe)
Mrs May went into the 2017 campaign confident of a big win and came out without a majority. For some insight into what went wrong, we met Steve Back, the photographer who had exclusive behind the scenes access to her election team.

It's arguable just when she appeared at her most pathetic. Was it when she offered to leave if they would only vote for her "deal"? Or that sphyncter-tighteningly embarrassing resignation speech? Was it that quavering voice saying "strong and stable" over and over again? Or the footage of her dancing? The whole country should go into trauma therapy after what it has endured.

Put yourself in her shoes, empathize, and go through catharsis, then judge with your conscience honestly and be not the one to cast the ''first stone'', analyse the role of other politicians from ruling tories/labour/liberals from commons and lords, observe the worst kind of obstructionism/pomposity in the history of Westminster and shed a tear for your country, if not for Theressa May.

@@calorus A typically stupid argument from a typically stupid Remainer. How many of those 48 million were eligible to vote? In case you hadn't noticed, babies, infants, schoolchildren, in fact nobody under the age of 18 has the right to vote. And what makes you think, in your supreme arrogance, that even in some fantasy land were they could vote, they would all have voted to Remain? Again in case you hadn't noticed, THE MAJORITY OF THOSE WHO COULD BE BOTHERED TO VOTE, VOTED LEAVE. It's what's known as DEMOCRACY - the majority vote WINS.

@alancadwallender
@alancadwallender 4 жыл бұрын
@@RaRa-eu9mw The supreme arrogance of you Remainers is quite staggering. Demanding vote after vote until you get the result you want is dictatorship, which is probably why you love the EU so much, as the EU also refuses to accept democratic results that it doesn't like. UK membership of the EU is insane and has no positive benefits. Our so-called 'free' trade costs us up to fifteen billions a year, and we have to accept the free movement of the entire EU population (over four million of whom are already over here). Why should the UK have to help to subsidise the rest of Europe? Our biggest market, by country, is the USA. The EU is NOT a country, although one day it will be, as its goal is 'Ever Closer Union,' which means the end of the nation state and the end of the UK. Everything about the EU is negative and restrictive. No rational person joins a club where the 'free' benefits entail being forced to hand over fifteen billion a year and having to give all of the other members the right to permanently occupy your home.

@Geffo555
@Geffo555 4 жыл бұрын
@Mark Gable. Your assertion was "We have already left the Eu on March 29th by law." You were wrong. Tilbrook's challenge was rejected by law. And the referendum really wasn't a good example of democracy by the way. Vote Leave fined twice for breaking electoral rules. Facebook fined $5 billion! for allowing Cambridge Analytica to use their platform to influence elections. None of which is remotely democratic.

@Geffo555
@Geffo555 4 жыл бұрын
@Mark Gable. People voted based upon the arguments made at the time, as they do in every election. But they were also influenced by Vote Leave's marketing blitz. Turkey joining the EU. £350 million a week for the NHS, etc. And Vote Leave clearly thought that SCL (Cambridge Analytica) were worth the investment as they paid them a lot of money. Who are you trying to kid here?
@Geffo555
@Geffo555 4 жыл бұрын
@Mark Gable. Oh, the actual company that Vote Leave hired was called AIQ. Facebook were paid over£2million to carry Vote Leave slogans in the two weeks before the referendum. And all targeted at voters who could be influenced. This is the nature of AIQ's business, and why Facebook was fined $5 billion. This is not democracy. It's programming. (Did you see what I did there?)

Cut and paste the following sentences into a search engine ? - " The multiplicity of parties, the icy fever of elections, the interminable changes of ministries aggravated the social crisis by creating a kaleidoscope of barren political combinations......the petty bourgeoisie rose up against all the old parties that had bamboozled it." If you have both the curiosity and patience to read the whole piece to the end (and it is a fantastic piece of deeply perceptive writing), please tell me that I'm being overly alarmist in believing that all of the socio-economic and political-ideological patterns described, are not clearly visible and actually happening to a certain degrees in a growing number of advanced Western societies...? In recent weeks, big name media presenters on US TV, most notably Donny Deutsch and Joe Scarborough, have not been afraid to call it out openly on their MSNBC shows, which are predominantly watched by the educated middle class and centrist left-ish older people. Madeleine Albright published a book warning of it earlier this year. Marx once said 'History repeats itself, first as tragedy, then as farce..." 'Comedians' have been elected in several evonomically distressed countries recently. Inhuman forces are gathering, consolidating, and moving, and some of them are wearing the masks of amusing clowns. Cool heads and calm, serious voices are required. Solidarity. We may need a lot of it.

We don't vote for a PM, we vote for an MP, and thereby a party. Only party members have rights to vote for who will lead that party. Finally, somewhere around 50% of our PMs have been "unelected". In fact, our greatest PM Winston Churchill was "unelected". He replaced Chamberlain in much the same way Boris is replacing May. As for change, well I guess we'll see. Not that I'm particularly hopeful either.
