I think they were both great in different ways. Richard's Dumbledore was a lot more passive and slow (most likely due to his age), which suited the earlier films when he was just the calm and endearing headmaster around the castle. Gambon's Dumbledore was a lot more active and fast, which suited the later films a lot better, since Dumbledore had to do a lot more. Personally I can't really imagine Richard running up to Harry frantically after he was selected by the Goblet in GoF, or in the big fire battle at the end of HBP. Richard was too frail to really pull those off like Michael did. Both did amazing jobs and gave the character their own flair though.

Hear hear...I couldn't agree with you more, the scene you mentioned in the 4th film is utterly pathetic, the whole film and that crazy Dumbledore made me speechless. Michael Gambon also admitted that he never read the books and he thinks in his opinion it is hardly necessary to do so, he wants to just follow his feelings and show us his unique style...This attitude also drives me crazy; the whole world wants to see Dumbledore not Mr. Gambon. I could definitely imagine Richard in the later films would be as perfect as the first two, I think if we can see richard's albus being killed by snape on the tower, everyone would instantly burst into tears for sure. When I see Gambon fall off the tower to death I feel nothing, i just hate this ugly mad old man, and since I have seen many of his films, Gambon's most charming characters are those common petty bourgeois, perfect philistines and so forth. He is, as Chris Columbus said, a great actor but not suitable for Dumbledore. @@marianpyter5948
