John Wayne was an actor and a very fine one. His films made millions of people happy, so where is there a problem? As far as I am concerned, his drinking habit was none of my business and nor were any other parts of his private life. How does anyone know that he 'refused' to go into the military? Did anyone witness it? Was anybody there? Did they hear him refuse? No! Like most other things, it is a sordid story that some people like to spread and, most probably, it's born out of envy and jealousy. I see no point in shaking the cupboard containing someone else's skeleton.

High Noon was considered, historically, to be the greatest Western ever made but I believe that the Shootist is right there with it. Truly, an underrated classic. My two favorite John Wayne films were The Shootist and They Were Expendable.

It seems that The Searchers is considered the best Western of all time by directors and critics. The Shootist is excellent and like Searchers took time to earn it's place as a misunderstood masterpiece of the genre. High Noon is still fantastic,, one that could still very easily be called greatest. Another I'm personally very fond of is William Wyler's The Big Country with Gregory Peck and Jean Simmons.

Duke saw the lack of publicity for this film coming back then when he remarked that paramount was putting all of it's effort into promoting the remake of "King Kong". Additionally, this film cried out for a winter release, not during the mid-summer, when folks are in less of a mood for material like this. A great film, however, he should have been nominated.

I don't think it was one of his best. I actually enjoyed his later movies like "Big Jake" and even "Rio Lobo" (the second remake of "Rio Bravo") more -- and they couldn't a candle to his best work in "The Searchers," "Red River," "The Man who shot Liberty Valance," or "Rio Bravo," and so many others. But as a film about a legendary Old West gunfighter at the end of his trail, it was a superbly poignant film, and as such, made the perfect swan song for the Duke, who at that time was suffering health problems severe enough that the producers were hesitant about casting him in the picture.

We lived in Carson City during the filming. One morning we visited the set on Mountain Street where an area was set up for onlookers. Mr. Wayne rode his horse to the barrier and greeted us, thanking us for coming. He kept the horse still to allow for photographs. One of the best thrills of our lives. It was amazing to see the transformation of the city block; before, during, and after location production.

I saw John Wayne once when he was filming Branagan in London. He was sitting in a Ford Capri on top of a skip on Tower Bridge being photographed by loads of photographers and I was on a double decker bus going over the bridge when I spotted him. He was always my hero and I couldn’t believe I saw him. I went home and excitedly told my mum and dad, and dad who happened to look like him and was nicknamed after him said “you should have invited him home for a cuppa tea” 😂 I wish I’d have had the guts to invite him but I think he would have mortified getting an invite from a young 20 year old. I met John Wayne when I was 6 yrs. old in Piedres Negras, Mexico just over from Eagle Pass while he was making The Alamo in Bracketville, Texas. My mother was to embarrassed to go over and get his autograph so she sent me over. Super nice and my mother still has that napkin in her cedar chest today.

John Wayne's love of interacting with people is legendary. I was doing an electrical remodel on a house and the owner retired Army MSRGT told me of Wayne sitting all afternoon with his platoon drinking whiskey by the full water glass in Saigon, then standing up and walked out to a helicopter to go somewhere while the rest of them were trying to figure out how to stand up. Then my Uncle was telling me that some friends needed a 4th for a poker game in Tucson, so one of them got the bright idea of calling his hotel and asking that a note be sent to Mr Wayne that if he desired to play poker here was the address. A half hour later there was a knock at the door and Wayne was standing on the porch with two six packs of beer and a box of cigars. One of my college professors had a picture of he and his brothers standing next to Wayne in the Disney land parking lot, his dad had recognized him and called out and even though Wayne was in a hurry, he stopped to talk to them and take pictures. Try that with the modern Hollywood elite.

Wow, this is a great one to watch. I saw THE SHOOTIST as a kid , on the big screen, in Iran of all places, with my father. Yes, John Wayne, dubbed in Farsi is another treat. LOL! It was in the later 70s and right before the Islamic revolution gave way to hardliner clerics who took over the country and limited art, music, and all sorts of self expression, especially from the West. Thank you for posting this. It brought back big emotions and memories of my father, and my love for American cinema.

My Great Grandfather went to Glendale high with John Wayne. Both statred working in the picture buisness around the same time. While Duke worked on sets, my great grandfather worked on cameras. He became a cameraman and photographer, off and on from the 1930s-1970s, excluding his time in the Military. He enlisted into the Army aircorp in 1942 as aviation photographer and Intel photographer during ww2. He served in North Africa, Europe, and even the pacific, where he had some -part in filming the atomic bomb drop. He later went into Korea in the US Airforce and never was officially discharged do to his part in classified Intel. He told my grandfather and my dad many of stories from his days in filming for Hollywood and the military.

I grew up with John Wayne as my hero. He was the best roll model for a boy then, and he remains so today. I cannot think of another celebrity in Hollywood with his true patriotism, love for America and unbridled support for our military. He was not afraid to speak openly about his love of country and the values that made America great. I believe that he would be terribly troubled by the liberals, progressives, and political correctness which is tearing this country apart. In the 80's I was a Reno, Nevada cab driver. I drove a lady to Carson City from the airport. We went to the beautiful old part of town not far from the governor's mansion. She lived in an old two story house. It was the boarding house from this movie. What an honor to have our state of Nevada so well recreated in the Duke's last film.

IMHO, I believe The Shootist is best movie of John Wayne's career. The relationship that evolved between Duke & Lauren Bacall's characters was heartbreaking, and his fatherly approach with Ron Howard's character inspiring. He went out like a man.

It was so nice to see that he really was as nice as I've always said he was. He seemed like he was a really genuine kind of person. He's right too about the movies of just plain mad taste. He'd really be amazed at the way things are being done in 2017!!

This is all the proof I need that there is a higher power behind this ride. John Wayne, ELVIS, Tupac, and all of the songwriters and movie writers who if honest will tell you they received their inspiration and guidance from another, almost soft voice in their head telling them what to do and where to be in the right moments. Most of us are just survivors trying to get by but occasionally a very great person comes along who touches the hearts of the rest of us.

This man was one of the greatest actors ever! He saw the future of filmmaking and wasn't crazy about it. He was one of the greatest actors in the history of Hollywood there will never be another one like him or his kind. I'm only 48 years old but I love these kind of old westerns back before technology computers in everything that has corrupted the world this was a simpler time the greatest generation
