Hey there, I'm Ricki, want to watch me decipher how to put together a nomadic set-up to live out of my Subaru? Come join the madness! 🙃
Rather than just show you all the perfected pieces of the puzzle, I figured it would be good to show the behind-the-scenes realities of trying to pull something off like this.
In this video I show my car top carrier, my 12V cooler/fridge, my fold out director's chair, and a fancy roll up table. We are almost there with all the gear!
Some people could probably put this together faster than I have, but I'm trying to work full-time while also researching and trying to source items (since I've found it's REALLY hard to get some things shipped to Alaska).
If you are curious about the process and if you want to see what I get up to once on the road (which is so soon!) then I'd love to have you check out this video and consider subscribing.
Crowdsourcing help with suggestions in the comments has been incredibly helpful, so keep them coming!

Oh my goodness, you are so kind! I just wanted to make videos to show that I wasn't finding out there. I am over the moon you find them helpful. I'll be working on showing how it's all come together and works (or doesn't) on the road too. Hopefully those will be helpful also. :)

Thanks! I'm doing the best I can with what I have. I certainly see why people go with vans, but I think my Subaru will be a cozy little home on wheels and I love it!

I make good money driving trucks. I can easily afford rent just about anywhere. That being said I moved into a full size conversion van almost a year ago and I absolutely love it.

I think the freedom to choose is definitely preferable than being forced into nomad life. And I love that you have chosen what works for you. I bet the coversion van is nice with so much space! I don't think we all need to live the same way. If a bricks and sticks place is right, cool. If the road calls, then great too! Thanks for checking out my video.

My girlfriend took a year off working and traveled around in her Subaru with a teardrop camper. It was more challenging for her in the summer with all the tourists taking over campgrounds and prices increasing but she really enjoyed it especially off season.

Hi! Long time no talk, I hope you are doing so well. And congrats, I saw a FB post form you recently. So happy for you! And I think it's awesome she took a year to travel in the teardrop. I am a bit nervous about the temperatures I'm seeing in the interior of Alaska and the tourists that are here now. It was my hope to be on the road faster, but life just didn't allow it. I hope you'll check out some of my videos once out in the great state of Alaska!

Thank you, thank you! I'm putting one foot in front of the other, learning more all the time. But I see this as a greater lige choice and not just a trip, so there is that much more pressure on making sure I get things set in a way that works for me because I want it to work so much. I appreciate your support!

You aren't alone, I'm not alone, there are so many like us I suspect. It's all a rollercoaster that you don't see in those perfect IG pictures. Nothing perfect going on over here. Thanks for your comment, I appreciate you watching. We've got this! One foot in front of the other.

I'd be worried if you weren't worried :) That your primitive brain trying to keep you safe. Tell it you've got this and keep moving toward your next evolution! Excited to see your adventures when you get on the road. Good luck!

Such a good point! If I wasn't looking out for my safety I could get myself into some big trouble. But being safe and being taken over by worries is not the same. I appreciate the support and I'm continuing to battle that "primitive brain." I hope you will check out my road videos, there are sure to be more lessons I need to learn there, haha.

There will always be doubts - bigger car, more food, warmer clothes..... Go and enjoy, the only good teacher is experience and I'm confident you'll succeed. Just don't do anything IDLH. If the little voice on your shoulder says don't do this, it's probably a bad idea.

You are right, always more things to try to improve, and if only concentrating on those it can totally steal from the present moment. I'm going to keep this in mind. I appreciate the reminder. I hope you enjoy some of the lessons that are sure to pop up once actually dealing with road life. (Exciting!)

Ahhhhhhhh Yeah, ice always lasts longer in Alaska ! As for that cooler it will work if you don't try to use it in warm temps.

Haha, yes ice should definitely last longer here. Although I'm starting to look at temps in interior Alaska and I'm shocked at them being over 80! I'm a little nervous about that. Hoping this cooler can help me keep some fresh food, if not then I guess I'll adapt. : /
