The Falcons have taken so many wrong turns over the yrs - both in leadership and personnel. They seem to have finally gotten it right - GM hire, HC hire, Coordinator/Asst hires, sticking with Ryan for the time being, solid draft with no real head-scratchers. The team is simultaneously in build mode AND win now. I have never been more excited for a season! p.s. I'm loving the GM/HC combination - a bit of a Yin and Yang these guys.

What's going to happen when Ryan's cap hit jumps from $26.9 million this year to $48.6 million next year? Of the 5 highest paid players, the only one that is safe if Grady Jarrett. But there is no replacement in place for Ryan (I think he has a good 2-3 years left before the decline is noticeable), Julio (who only played in 9 games last year and frequently left the field during drives in the few games he played), Matthews, and Fowler. The team needs to clear about $9.2 million just to sign the 2021 draft class. They aren't going to cut Ryan, Matthews, or Jarrett. What team is willing to eat Julio's $23 million cap hit? And we didn't draft a DE high enough that could replace Fowler. I'm happy so far that Fontenot only reworked Ryan's contract. So far, he's been very responsible with his cap management. And he didn't extend Ryan, he just turned his salary into a bonus so it's just guaranteeing the money. But next year's draft is going to require a LT & DE in rounds 1 and 2 to get this cap back under control. That will get Matthews & Fowler off the books. And how can Ryan's cap hit be reduced from $48.6 million without extending him for another 3 years? That's the tricky situation. This is what happens when you signed Freeman to a ridiculous contract and extended Jones with a full 3 years left on his contract. Now we are paying the price for those moves. So 2021 is a write off year. 2022 is a write off year. Ridley will need to be extended in 2022 and there will be no money to do it unless Julio is traded post June 1, 2021 and Matthews & Fowler are cut after June 1, 2022. If we don't extend Ridley in 2022, he walks in 2023. The Falcons have the lowest number of players under contract of any team in the league in 2022 (only 31) and we are already close to the cap. And this doesn't include the massive contract coming to Ridley. If Fontenot remains responsible with the cap then by 2023, we can start to actually sign free agents that aren't league minimum salaries. But by then, Ryan will be running on fumes at age 39. Julio will definitely be gone (he'll be gone next month anyway if any team can eat his salary). Matthews will be a distant memory. So now we'll be free of the Dimitroff cap disaster but we'll need a rookie QB in 2023 and a WR. So while this isn't an announced rebuild, this is a long painful process to be mediocre while digging out of a cap nightmare. 2021 - trade Jones. 2022 - draft LT & DE in rounds 1/2. 2023 - draft QB & WR in rounds 1/2. So this is just going to be years of suffering to pay for Dimitroff's fat contracts to aging veterans. And anyone who thought ATL would get a QB in 2021 does not understand basic math. The Falcons would have had to eat over $63 million in dead cap space on Ryan's contract. A full 1/3 of the total cap. That was never going to happen. Ryan can't even be cut next year. Too expensive. And he's fine. Ryan is not the problem on this team. He's easily the best QB in the history of the franchise. And we picked up an undrafted free agent RB from Louisville that could actual get notable playing time and it proves you NEVER give a RB a second contract. And you certainly don't waste round 1-3 picks on an RB. It's like drafting punter. Not necessary. You draft positions in the early rounds that allow you to manage the most expensive positions in a friendly manner (QBs, LTs, DEs, CBs, and WRs) by paying low rookie contract salaries for 4-5 years instead of weighing down the roster with aging veterans who are super expensive (i.e. Fowler, Matthews, Julio).
