In War and Peace novel Natasha's father count Rostov loses the money not nicola! Nicola gambles and loses to dolokov but he pays him back eventually...yet the count Rostov lavishing lifestyle and parties make him lose his fortune! Also Sonya is related to the family she is Natasha's cousin and the real reason she helps natasha is because she loves nicola and she doesn't want a scandal to ruin his sister's reputation! I don't think grace read the book but still she is wonderful as Marya!
