One of the great things about The Storyteller is that it took the old tales and it played them as such. You got a sense of age from them. You got a sense of a long past era and of the oral tradition. What helped, probably, was that they avoided some of the more cliche folk tales in favor of less common ones.

Jim Henson's The StoryTeller was absolute magic at it's very best! My all-time favourite series!

Yeah, it's truly great. I really wish that it could have lasted longer, and expanded to include the folklore and mythology of Africa, Australasia, the Americas, and Asia.
@robertwilliams46825 жыл бұрын
@@jordanbriskin238 I agree, but It was too short as it was. They didn't even scratch the surface with European folklore. Only thirteen 20 minute episodes. Many miniseries have longer runtimes. But yeah, quality over quantity is exemplified by the Storyteller. I would consider 8 of the episodes among the top episodes of any series I've ever seen (Fearnot, Soldier and Death, Luck Child, Hans my Hedgehog, Story Short, Heartless Giant, Three Ravens (probably the best one), and the True Bride).

@@robertwilliams4682 Jim Henson was disappointed with NBC pulling the plug too early as well. (This was because it had low ratings and had a deficit.) He wanted to have installments twice as long air on _The Jim Henson Hour_ . Sadly, that didn't come to fruition.

I am from Peru and I am 44 now, I grew up watching these series. I still watch it and I think it's brilliant. One of the best thing humanity has ever produced.

I'm begging for this series to be re-released on DVD and Blu-ray with special features. Like "The Dark Crystal" and "Labyrinth", this series is one of the high benchmarks of fantasy on film and television. Unlike those two films, however, I did not see "The Storyteller" growing up and had been stunned when as an adult I discovered it. Please, make this series available so that the next generation can marvel at its wonders and appreciate myths and fables again!

I already have it. It's OOP in the states. It warrants a proper rerelease in hi-def.

I love the rough and gentle tone to John Hurt's voice it makes me feel relaxed. It wasn't the same when they changed the Storyteller from John Hurt to Michael Gambon.

Just watched this again on with my 9 year daughter and she was just as engaged as I was the first time I saw it. Still draws you right in thanks to the incredible vision of the whole production team and Jim along with an incredible delivery from John Hurt performing exceptional writing and word play. Essential viewing for all ages

If The Jim Henson Hour was like The Wonder World of Disney, then The Storyteller was like Alfred Hitchcock Presents.

The interviews in this clip are from the PBS "Great Performances" episode, "The World of Jim Henson." Great special. If you go to eBay or Amazon, you may still find the VHS. It was on KZbin until recently before it was taken down.

I've been watching these recently with my 8 year old and he loves it. A real shame it's gone from Amazon Prime and can't be streamed anywhere in the UK anymore. The Storyteller is an amazing accomplishment and the imaginative way the tales are written and shot blows anything else I can think of out of the water. It oozes with creativity and is played with conviction by hugely talented actors. There aren't any shortcuts taken and every moment is maximised. Technically speaking it is still astounding.

One day, when I have kids of my own, I'll buy each episode and let them be amazed like I was. Even now with all the advanced CGI of contemporary film this still has great appeal.

I'm sure that many people are of the opinion that the somewhat elfin looks of the character of the Storyteller himself, may not win him any prizes by the traditional standards of male beauty, but I personally think that he's rather handsome, in his own unique way. (I think it's something in John Hurt's eyes that contributes to it.)

@babystreetfighta Disney's okay in its own right, but with folk tales no one should ever be able to dictate how a story should be told because they belong to all the common people. Better to expose your kids to as many different versions of the stories than limiting it.
