For the 2nd largest US Railroad, technically the "steam" period never ended. Union Pacific never retired their 4-8-4 Northern 844 and she's still in special service. They also brought back one of the true giants of the rails, 4014 Big Boy a 4-8-8-4 and use her for steam excursions (and has at least once been uses to push a stalled diesel powered train)!

Hello Vanessa - greetings from a thawing out Poland. Not so cold today - a balmy +5 degrees! Another wonderful video with a stormy and windy start. You should have had your concentrating face on going into Boggs Lock. What exceptional bird life this week. The Great White Egret and Buzzard were the stars for me. A superb visit to Shugborough Hall with its impressive railway tunnel entrance - The Gateways to Jerusalm is a very apt name for it. The beginning of a new Journal. A new beginning perhaps - drawing first and poem second.

It's bazzar that because British Rail has a franchise system to get rid of unprofitable rail lines to private companies, that steam run trains have came back in life within obscure areas in Britain.

Wonderful, atmospheric documentary! However, if only these heritage railways were connected to the main network of British railways so that they could offer not just tourist trips but commercial services with an interchange of trains from Network rail to to destinations outside the current truncated system!

What the heck was this about? Editing failure? Bits of the Great Central randomly intercut with bits of the Welsh Highland and the Festiniog? I managed to make a coherent ten-minute watch of the 'gravity' train by liberal use of the Fast Forward button. There were about four separate short stories going on, did somebody think it made them more intersting to cut them into disjointed bits?

@mudman6156

@@whispofwords2590It’s relevant because the video blatantly declares that the age of steam is OVER. THAT’S SIMPLY NOT TRUE. Anything that’s associated with nuclear power gets its main thrust to perform the work from STEAM. Nuclear power just replaced the need for boilers. But the work is still accomplished through the generation and expansion of STEAM POWER. Today that steam expands as it travels through turbines, causing them to spin. Those spinning turbines either generate electricity or spins a ship’s huge propeller shafts.

I was somewhat disappointed by the “bait and switch” tittle for this video. Based on the description I was expecting a video about the gravity train. It was buried in other material, which though itself very worthy, was not what I was looking for. I had to scroll through the video to find the parts about the gravity train. I love steam trains - I remember watching 6000 coming into Paddington, easily recognized at a distance by the bell on the front. However, I don’t like these “bait and switch” descriptions some Utube videos employ.

I thoroughly agree. There was some interesting material but this was just a disjointed mess. They could have made three short but far more coherent videos out of the bits. Makes me wonder if they stole the footage from somewhere else and cut it up to try and avoid detection. I have no reason to suspect that other than - if it was legitimately theirs - why chop it around like that? I just clicked on 'Don't recommend channel' - I don't need the frustration and there's masses of good steam footage on KZbin.

Aren’t steam engines coal powered? Isn’t that supposed to be bad for the environment? Shouldn’t we be encouraging electric powered locomotives? 😉
@J.G.H.
@J.G.H. 9 ай бұрын
These legacy engines are pretty much nothing compared to the number of cars and trucks on the road across the world pumping out CO2, heck a single coal fired power-plant probably consumes more coal in a hour than the entire British Legacy fleet does in a year.
@user-mr8ij8gi7c
@user-mr8ij8gi7c 9 ай бұрын
Aren't most of the electric power plants also burning coal? Wouldn't this mean the "electric trains" you wish to promote are indirectly getting their power from coal? (just burning the coal at a remote location, and using a steam turbine rather than a steam locomotive)
@scottkludgedorsey4805
@scottkludgedorsey4805 9 ай бұрын
It's true coal is pretty dirty, but the gravity train makes up for that. The gravity train has far less environmental impact than any electric locomotive.
