I love this! I just started photographing couples for the first time and find myself getting so caught up in my head. Great shoot and I really appreciate how the person filming this is far enough back so you can really see how you've placed the couple within the lighting. So often I watch videos but the video zooms in too close and you can't see exactly how the photographer positioned the subjects. Many thanks to you and to the person who filmed this!

Thanks! I think the serious and awkward ones really just come down to getting them to stop thinking about the camera and more on each other and to have some fun. There'll always be couples who can be more difficult to shoot than others, but as long as they have fun with you and you do work similar to what they've seen from you before, then they'll love the images. It'll be difficult for you but the goal is to make sure they still love the photos and had fun doing it.

@@kittykat3864 Awesome! Building a photography business is a marathon and not a sprint. Take your time, build it right, and be consistent. Make sure you're sharing and posting your work consistently to social media. Don't be afraid to create work for free at first to get some traction and building your portfolio, but make sure you do it on your terms, meaning you're in charge of the shoot and you're not shooting for a client for free. Figure out how much you need to make from photography each month and break that down into how many shoots or weddings you'd need to do each month to make that much money. Doing things that way will allow you to set goals on both income and shoots so that you have something to aim for. Lots of tips for that, but don't get discouraged in the beginning. It takes a while to get the ball rolling.

The moving couple when they walk towards you, how do you manage to get them so crisp? What focal point are you at? I’ll think about it. My settings are pretty simple. I shoot with wide open aperture, low ISO and fast enough shutter speed to avoid blur. My settings for this shoot are the same as any other shoot. I think what would be more beneficial is a video guide that explains lighting and the posing. Would you agree?

Thanks and ultimately, my settings don’t matter. All anyone needs to know is that I shoot with my aperture as wide open as possible (1.4-2.8) and then make sure my shutter speed is as fast as it needs to be to avoid blurring and then my ISO is set to make sure the exposure is correct. My images are exposed as close to perfect in camera and then my Lightroom edits completely change the final look of the photo. I am shooting on a Sony a7iii but you can get images like this on really any camera if you have a 50 1.4.

Hey Chad! I think I was on a 50mm 1.4 from Sigma. Big lens and looks similar to the 24-70. And settings are pretty wide open (1.4-2.8) and iso probably between 400-1000 and shutter likely 1/200 or faster

Do you have any tips for shooting a couple where the woman is taller than the man?

[@JosiahBlizzard]

It's definitely tough, but only because we've determined that men should be taller than women which isn't always the case. My biggest tip is to approach it with the mindset of "this is normal for them." It might be weird for you, but for them and their relationship, they're not going to find it strange. I'll ask them if they're self conscious about anything and if the man is self conscious about his height in relationship to the woman, and I'll tell them that making him appear taller would mean that we're lying about their relationship and who they are. I want to capture their true relationship and so we can do some things to lessen that height difference, but we will be following a lot of the same poses and doing a lot of prompts because it's about the laughter, the smiles, the real moments that will make you feel something when you see the image.

Thanks! Because I shoot Sony, my focus mode is always continuous as it has face tracking. I am also just keeping an eye on my in camera meter.

Not sure. My aperture was super open, probably 1.4. My ISO was probably around 400-800 and my shutter speed was fast enough to stop them from blurring when they moved.

Thanks. Settings obviously vary based on lighting and location. I’m typically shooting between f/1.4-2.8, shutter speed fast enough to avoid unintentional motion blur, and iso as low as I can keep it.
