The small arms facility is now virtually non operational except for personnel who travel to facilitate weapons repairs. The DOD has determined that it is cheaper to buy new weapons as opposed to repair/overhaul costs

Actually their job title is small arms repairer. Many of them came in on a temporary appointment and after 1 year of on the job training they were given a permanent position. I started on the same job in this shop in 1981 with 45b training while in the army. I started in the M2 50 cal section rebuilding on the average 400 M2s each month. We had approximately 25 people in our section at the time

5inch group at 100 yards is 5 moa right? Milking that barrel's life span at the expense of combat effectiveness. I see now why the army is described as several soldiers throwing rocks and marines as more precise rock throwing smaller force. It's easier on the budget to support a smaller elite force

I worked with Paul Barber prior to my retirement in 2012. How he became chief is still in question
@xusmico1875 жыл бұрын
as chief, his knowledge of parts is suspect
@322mikie Жыл бұрын
Actually Paul Barber worked as a Small Arms Repairer for several years prior to becoming Chief.

Reclaiming parts does not "save the taxpayer money"; the military spends all of it's budgeted funds. It's more accurate to say that saving money on some gun parts allows more money to be spent on other gun parts. Six hundred billion dollars per year; money that won't be spent on education or health care.
