This song was SO far ahead of its time. It sounds like it was made more in the late 80s than the early 80s. Great melody, structure, music and production. It predicted "adult contemporary" music almost a decade before that became a thing.

...and now in 2023 you can find videos on here of young people *REACTING* to this song and *LOVING IT!* They are in awe of the sentiment of the song, and of course the note at the end. They are not used to real singing, and amazing singing as the music they grew up on was mass produced, instead of created by artists. This song means so much to people in the era it was released because it makes you realize what you feel about the person you are with. My wife and I were married 4 years when this song came out. We celebrated or 38th anniversary yesterday. I remember how moved I was when this song came out because my wife is what completes me.

I remember hearing this on the radio a lot when I was growing up. I always loved the ending where the singer holds the note and the song ends. Beautiful song, beautiful lyrics. The song starts off slow but by the chorus I was hooked, and then the ending left me with just a feeling of love for a good song. Couldn't wait until the DJ played it again. Back when they had DJS that could actually take requests.

A beautiful song that gets ignored on the radio, and it's a shame! Since its rerelease and #1 position, the song has been included on numerous 80's compilations ("Monster Ballads") and movies ("Joe Dirt"); it even set a record for the longest note for a male pop singer (19.3 seconds at the end), and it's crazy how it wasn't even a major hit at first, especially with Journey's "Open Arms" and "Faithfully" being massive hits in '82-'83

LOL Anyway, Casey Kasem played the whole song all the way through right until the end.

back in the glory days of Billboard's regional hits, this tune which only hit mid 60s on the Hot 100 Nationally in early 1983, ruled the airwaves of Atlanta Georgia. Z93 played it, 94Q played it, and 96Rock played the living hell out of it. Can't say for sure it was a number one on the local playlists, but it had to be damn close. Going number one in 1989 just let everyone else discover what a masterpiece it was. And of course gave us Alias.
