Fun fact, that kid from Dick Tracy and Can't Hardly Wait went to Yale and got a JD, now he's a hardcore rightwing Federalist Society Republican guy. Also, the Romans conquered Dacia in 105 CE (or AD if that's your preference) and left it in 275 CE (AD). The pre-Roman Dacians were famous for using a kind of curved sword called a "falx" that was particularly good at lopping off enemy heads and arms - this is supposedly why the Romans started putting those lobster tail things on the back of their helmets.

My gf is Romanian. A LOT of her friends Stan ceaucescu a fair bit. He gets props for getting the country out of debt and people claim there was no hunger or homelessness during his reign. In the same breath they'll also acknowledge the rampant black market and oppression as if it was perfectly normal and not connected to him at all, so the cognitive dissonance is strong. There's still a romanticism of strong leaders in that part of the world

As much as I like to shit on him as a Romanian, paying our debts and massively industrializing the country are things I and many other people still give him props for.

Yeah; one part of that is socialism, the other is that smoothbrain everyone Stans so much. Worst experiment of all of them.

He made those deapths and he payed them by letting his country starve. The Romanians saying otherwise are still stricken with propaganda even today

They're Australian and we don't have them in North America. Instead, we have a "mockingbird" that is pretty similar. But "mockingjay" is the fictional bird from the Hunger Games books.

26:25 as an Italian, small correction: the cheese he's talking about is called Casu Marzu (literally: rotten cheese) and it's from Sardinia. And yes, it is illegal but still considered a delicacy (by some people, me absolutely not included). Edit: they mention it a little later, but they still say it's from Romania despite using the name that is literally in Sardinian dialect. *shrugs*

Hey, I worked at the Toy's R Us video game department back "then". When there was one Dreamcast we couldn't sell - even though it was bundled with Prince of Persia. Bins of clearance Genesis games. Genesis might not have won the console war, but it was the only system that gave us a DS9 game.

My favorite thing about Nicolae Ceausescu is how the authors of the Left Behind books of Christian revenge porn decided that this joker should be the Antichrist a decade after he was executed by his own armed forces.

Robert is terrible at pronouncing things generally, and at least with Ceaucescu he's in the neighborhood of the correct pronunciation. I had a really hard time listening to his episode about the Kim Il-Sung and his successors because I had a hard time parsing even words and names that I was familiar with because his pronunciation was so far off.
@TheDarthbinky Жыл бұрын
Yeah I went to college in Austria and speak German... thanks to a little thing called Nazism, there's a lot of BTB eps about Germans, and the pronunciations are painful. But I gotta give him credit for being super consistent. He is even bad at pronouncing some English words.
@mattgilbert734711 ай бұрын
He often ends up "accidentally Australian" in his pronunciations. Like South African by way of Chicago, sort of.

23:00 Actually, I have read that the Magyars may actually be ethnically and linguistically related to the Hunnic Confederation, or at least some parts of it, and regardless, the Magyars eventually came to embrace the association. I mean, they claim to have Atilla the Hun's Sword of Mars.
