"The Rifleman" was Leonid Brezhnev's favorite TV show. Nixon even arranged a meeting between between Chuck Connors and Brezhnev during his visit to the U.S.

We NEED a TV movie about this.

Yeah Columbo was huge in Hungary, we even have a statue of him and his dog here in Budapest. Also the movies of Italian actors Bud Spencer and Terrence Hill were another cultural icon for some reason...

Ooh, Ceausescu. I visited Romania as a backpacker in 1982. When I missed a rendezvous with a contact at uni dorms, I was invited by four Israeli med students to crash in their room. They laid on the Hasbara, explaining that "we" shared a Judeo-Christian Tradition, unlike "them." They had an eliminationist attitude toward Palestinians, and there was some back-and-forth about whether the Uzi, good enough for the Americans, was good enough for the IDF. They said that they didn't speak Romanian when they enrolled in the med school, and that classes were taught in Romanian. I assume that they became pill-pushers for the Great and the Good when they graduated. Terrible people that taught me an important lesson about the Israeli state.

Good lesson to learn that early. 1982? Was this around the same time Sabra and Shatila happened?

This was skipped for brevity but isn't there a weird period of time where Romania switches sides and ends up fighting Germany and Friends in Hungary alongside the Soviets?

Columbo, Dallas, Jojak were indeed pretty popular in Socialist Romania.

@@PMickeyDee It was one of the few shows aired here during Ceausescu. I saw a couple of episodes some years ago out of curiosity. Sort of a James Bond/Jojak/Columbo hybrid.
