Learned this lesson from a Role playing game. A had acquired a shiny item. Someone scams me and take it. I cried and decided from now on all I will be focusing on is building skills which will make money back even if I loose everything. I ended up getting scammed again but this time I could earn my money back quickly. I thought I had learnt my mistake but I got scammed in real life too. I have build a lot of intresting and vaulable skills, acting, comedy filmmaking, charisma, public speaking, psychology of people, film music, but they didn't turn in cash so now focusing on the more money making skill selling, which is enhanced by my acting and charisma skills. The other skills gave me a dream partner from a TV-show so now only money is left to acquire.

I am learning something from Alex I never did at business school. 1. that you need to have something you like about what you do. 2. that learning as a skill compounds everything. It does not matter if you are not the best at something right now, it matters if you are able to stay humble that becoming the best is a never ending process. I recently left my own startup because those two rules did not apply anymore. The opportunity was there, but there was no enjoyment (because the opportunity could not be exploited further) and I was not able to compound my skills in the venture. I needed to level up which is what I'm doing now. He says the same in his book, "level 10 skillset with a level 2 opportunity". Cheers for a great podcast !

Mehhhh I agree with his sentiment but the reality is much more complicated than learning skill sets. That’s why a ton of Doctors/ Lawyers make a modest wage relative to their skill sets when compared to someone like Alex. And I think he’s a perfect example- what skills does he have actually? He was a consultant and then started his own business. To me he has his net worth not due to tangible skill set but due to his ability to speak (and likely write) , understand big picture strategy and take risk. Compare that to a doctor, engineer, CPA- they have tangible skills but bandwidth chewed up by their industry and much more invested to obtain those skills that make assuming the risk of stepping off the path much greater. Not taking away from what he’s accomplished but I see tangible skill set and risk taking/ strategy to break away as different “things”. Obviously these are subject to overlap but for the most part very different. That’s why someone like Elon Musk who has tremendous “skills” as a programmer but also equal big picture strategy, high threshold for risk and ability to speak is 1 in a billion. But he’s not the norm. Most individuals fall in one of the two categories in my opinion - and Alex is the big picture strategist (not the tangible skill guy) in my opinion
@BehindtheBrand2 жыл бұрын
Hey Ethan, thanks for the comments...Follow up Question - I'm curious...What is your (range) of personal net worth?
@Darathkhon2 жыл бұрын
I don’t think it’s simply his ability to think big picture that made him successful. Sure it plays a role, but starting and growing a successful business requires many skills. For example learning how to close a sale is a skill. Marketing is a skill. Copywriting is a skill.
@starshockey112 жыл бұрын
@@BehindtheBrand thanks for the reply. hahah nothing close to yours mate and by no means was attempting to claim any sort of financial superiority by way of my comments and don’t find net worth to take away from any of the points either . Especially when you consider the manner in which our economy actual operates- what you make doesn’t always correlate to what your level of competency is. And in certain cases it really doesn’t To answer your question- I work as an aerospace engineer making 190k per year but own around 3 million in real estate that profits about 150-200k per year from rental income. If that tells you anything about my “net worth”. And another 600k in investments depending on the day. At 30 I’m staring to see the growth potential as an engineer greatly level off and the infinite potential that exists outside through business ventures. And plenty of extremely hard working/ competent folks that will never be wealthy due to reasons I touched on I always get confused by that question tho - does that mean straight liquidity or rough estimation if you were to sell everything.
@JK-td7ky2 жыл бұрын
I totally agree. I think there can be some overlap but once you have a decent amount of knowledge, it’s relatively easy to optimize speaking skills to make money.
@qaviproductions2 жыл бұрын
What is the difference between a tangible & non-tangible skillset? I ask this, simply, because I don't think you really have a true understanding or definition. Yes doctors and lawyers have skills, which is the ability to consume knowledge and procedures and then practise them effectively. In Alex's case it goes far deeper. For instance the skill of selling, you can start with a basic script and build your confidence up - that will only get you so far. However by continuously developing the skill of selling you start working and masterings on all aspects, tonality, pitch, NLP, hooks, offers, lead management etc. Now, again in alex's case, when you combine the skill of selling with skills of a master marketeer the outcome is exponentially greater. And so on. So to compare someone who has worked to develop a skill set on one plane (i.e a doctor) and compare them with someone who essentially "stacks" skill sets, which compliment each other, is a bit ludicrous.

@dsj192 жыл бұрын
Resist people really don't get it. There's not a cookie cutter template to what exact status l steroids can be taken. You have to find a skill or product that can make large amounts of money inproportionate to the amount of time put in. Or a product that can sell and transact outside of the limitations of time you have to work there's a bunch of different "blanks" that could fille the above 2 scenarios. It's up to you as a person to find out what you can fill in the blanks with. Your first answer was a contract. Which essentially means some with the power just granting you the millions of dollars with a pen. That's a workers mentality

That's a lie... I think MOST people if given the opportunity, would sign the contract if they were guaranteed to be a millionaire in 10 years. I'd say over 90% of people who were asked.
@titolovely82372 жыл бұрын
that's what he's saying though.... people dont. you can almost guarantee to be a millionaire in 10-15 years if you work alot, dont spend more than the necessities require, advance your skillset which leads to advancement in your career, and invest your money into a reasonable growth fund. the thing is though, noone wants to live like a poor person for 10 years, working like crazy and saving/investing 50-70% of your income. thats the contract that ppl wont sign. you can be a millionaire in 10 years, but the cost is too high for most ppl, which is why most ppl arent millionaires. what he's pointing out is that the best predictor of financial success is generally going to be the ability to forgoe the now for the later. the more you can forgoe the luxuries of the now for what comes later, the higher the likelihood you have to be financially successful. you may not be worth 100m, but you can easily be worth 2-3m after a 10-20 year career.
