This show is a great example about how "tension" doesn't have to come from a "we need to save the world" idea. I felt more tension when Hank cornered Walt and Jesse inside their own RV than in just about any moment in cinema history. @J Wil that's more Freudian psych than philosophy. I think that particular part statement is wrong; the seat of human problems is that we desire evil. We are often selfish, prideful and self destructive. We have conflicting desires for selflessness and selfishness. This is often what causes mental illness. Pure psychopaths don't have anxiety because they have no internal conflict, it's all selfishness. Saints have anxiety because they are not pure saints and have a constant struggle against the dark corners of their hearts, as well as the moral darkness of the world around them. Many people are somewhat oblivious, and feel that conforming to social expectations is all they need to do, but realize later in life that social expectations can't be the standard because they change over time.

I love when Gilligan says that sometimes characters go in the opposite direction of where he wanted them to go. This is why the show is amazing. The writers knew the characters so well that they essentially just thought "okay whats he thinking right now?" and then whatever it is, thats the direction the character goes. I think many writers make the mistake of making decisions for their characters. They should let their characters make the decisions, and then fill in the blanks with excellent story telling and structure.

He tells Jesse "I am awake" and he tells Skyler "I was really... I was alive". So yeah, he was doing it for himself, not to kill or be mean, but to feel awake and alive for the first and last time in his short life. On that score, I admire him, despite the collateral damage. This is a great analysis of his character. Walt is definitely a terrible person. He has a huge ego, is super irresponsible, and is willing to ruin the lives of innocent people to get what he wants. But, at the same time, I don’t think he is evil either. He is not sadistic and doesn’t enjoy killing. And when push comes to shove, he also always puts the lives of the people he cares about above his own. He is selfish and selfless at the same time.

You see all the little things that lead up to the creation of the characters and it is just amazing. Not to mention on further viewings you really get a feel for all the foreshadowing and such they put in. @Niranjan Rajesh 5 foot girl was exactly what this video was saying not to do. The term Deus ex Machina should be renamed "Arya becomes the Flash for 5 minutes." Since, _Deus ex Machina_ is when some new event, character, *ability,* or object *solves a seemingly unsolvable problem in a sudden, unexpected way.* It's often used as the solution to what is called "writing yourself into a corner," where the problem is so extreme that nothing in the established setting suggests that there is a logical way for the characters to escape. If a bomb is about to go off, someone finds a convenient bomb-proof bunker in easy reach. _Or Arya conveniently uses new, unforeshadowed sonic speed to match her silent footsteps on the snow, to become invisible and undetectable in order to get past the White Walkers._ Even though she was nearly caught by zombies in the library half an hour before.

@@chriswalkey2050 I wouldn't file that under Gus getting stupid, I see it as following all the way through to the cornerstone of his character's motivation. That motivation was observed oh-so-wrongly in BCS S5 by Juan Bolsa when he was trying to convince Lalo that he's getting worked up over nothing, as Gus is "all business." Gus's business success and life weren't derailed by his lust for vengeance. The business was only a tool in his playing the (very) long game in achieving that vengeance. In the end I guess you can mark the score as a tie in their feud, but his cause for being was fulfilled. There's also a great related scene between Gus and Mike.

@Alltilt Its very good up until season 4 after s4 they ran outta book material, so the show turned ugly. You will see yourself the change in quality of the show after s4. And s8 is just horrible, first 6 seasons had 10 episodes each s7 had 7 episodes and s8 only has 6 episodes. Until s7 only 60-65% of the story has unwrapped so only 6 episodes is not enough for the rest of the story. So the s8 feels so rushed and D&D sucks at writing.

I think it's fantastic creative advice aswell tho. For anything really. Want people to listen to your album? Put all your efforts in the first seconds to be intriguing, captivating and eventually those will become iconic given that the rest of your music delivers. Many artists don't understand or pay enough attention to that, they think about depth, style, quality of craft first and foremost, and sure you should worry about that like hell, but in a world of talented people where you have to stand out, you've got to take care of your façade, make sure that you catch the attention of the sleepiest of eyes.

Should've been a better husband to Skyler. He wasn't there. He was out robbing a train or cooking meth. All of this comes at a peak moment when Holly starts crying out for Skyler in that gas station bathroom place. Walt kind of realizes that in his mad scramble for power on account of his ego, he had neglected and completely drove away the one thing he really cared about. When he comes back from New Hampshire, the house and the pool and completely disheveled and barren. The thing they said about Gus’ downfall being based on emotion was so gratifying for me because thats exactly why I loved how it played out so much. Just like Walter, his pride was his downfall. Going to Hector himself was an unnecessary risk, and if he had no personal connection to hector it’s one he wouldn’t have taken. However his pride and his need for revenge against the husk of what used to be a man who he hates was the reason he went there personally.

Television in general tends to have more creativity and better characters/stories. Probably because of the longer amount of time tv has to develop them. It seems movies are often worried about spectacle and effects and such because if they lack these things they might not break even, let alone turn a profit. Many people don’t want to see things like this show in a theater when they feel they can stay home and get it in, well, a show. The key to what makes their writing so great, with both breaking bad and maybe even more so with better call saul, is their commitment to hard work. “The job itself is like driving nails in your forehead.” Clearly Vince/they’re perfectionists, and it shows. I am one of those dudes that defended season 7 of GoT. But after the last season, I felt betrayed. I recently finished Breaking Bad and the flow is very smooth compared to Game of Thrones. They just wanted to put a lot of great scenes at the expense of a great storytelling.

GoT is your second choice? Not the Wire? The Sopranos?

GoT is spectacul! It may be the biggest show of all times. But we have seen the quality of writing has decreased in the last seasons. BB has been better each season, something rare in TV and that is one of the reasons that makes it better. And let's not begin to talk about the amazing writing quality of Better Call Saul.

This is excellent. One of the best compilations of the writing team behind BB. Behind the curtain, you are a legend. The timelapse of the writers room was so hugely inspiring.Hope you can find such content for shows like Community and Fargo too. Personally I found this video to be your most comprehensive one so far. Thanks a ton for this. The universe is indebted to you.

I appreciate the comment, man. I personally like this one the best as well. Both of those shows sound great! I'll add them to my list. The Sopranos video is coming out today.
