Sam: “I was disappointed with the Gen 2 F-Type as it felt dead to drive and was too quiet” Sam 20 minutes later: “you don’t need to test drive a car before you buy as all cars are great. I’d drop £100k on the new F-Type and not be disappointed with the performance!” Absolute rubbish. I’ve test driven cars I’ve been desperate to own and pulled out due to disappointment. The both of you have the benefit of driving so many of these cars you intrinsically know how the new one will handle. Most others haven’t.

I disagree on Tony's point with test drives. Not long ago, I thought I wanted a new Supra. A 6-cylinder, RWD, sports coupe. What's not to love? I drove it and just didn't love it. It's numb through the suspension and the gearbox was just too busy unless you put it in manual mode. I got back to the Toyota dealership and they put me out in their GR Yaris and I had probably the most fun driving a car that I've had in years. It was only a 15-20 minute test drive and I could tell immidiately that the car was much more me. If I hadn't driven these cars then I would have bought the Supra and then ended up quite disappointed. I previously dismissed the Yaris because it was hatchback and not really much BHP compared to the other cars I was considering, which before driving it was not what I wanted. I won't buy cars without a test drive. I don't care if it has problems because I'll be buying with a warranty anyway. I don't care about the tech inside because I only have a car for fun now that I don't have a commute anymore. I don't care too much what it looks like because I don't care what people think of me while I'm driving it. The power delivery, gearbox, suspension, and steering feel is what I go out on a test drive for.

I disagree too. Most people don't work in the car industry with a wealth of experience to draw on. You can't get in a new 100k 911 and expect a 40k 997 to live up to that nor would I want to waste the guy at Porsche's time or lie to their face to get in the seat. That just leaves the used dealers and surely its par for the course of selling a 'drivers car'.

1) I'd love to hear Tony interview Sam. He seems like a great business man with a vision, otherwise Tony wouldn't respect him as much as he does. Hearing how he manages marketing campaigns, allocates his time & partners with corporates would be awesome. 2) The Bond cars are always stylish yet understated, it's a signature look that is classic & ages well. The new cars are ushering a new generation which say's a lot about modern society. 3) Daniel Craig was an amazingly physically capable Bond who can take a beating & still attend a Gala dinner in a nice suit, Connery was a classic gentleman & Brosnan was a young-blooded Bond in my opinion. I'm South African so I can't have too strong of an opinion on his depiction of European suaveness. 4) The best intro Super car is the R8 or Porsche brand, Exciting yet practical supercar is any McLaren car & full fledged supercars are Lambo's, Ferrari's & GTR's. 5) If Paul is planning, it'll turn into a Top-Gear'like adventure. Lots of frustration, shouting cars & each other.... but VERY memorable day's with a group of amazing guys with different perspectives to life who respect each other. Doesn't get any better than that if you ask me. 6) Have fun & keep up the great content. Thank you for an amazing chat while I cook dinner gents, you guys are cool people. P.s stop fan-boying the prancing horse so much lol. Salude

I would really love to hear your guys views on what cars you would buy at different price points. I would find it interesting to see what you’d buy yourself at different price points starting at £20k, £50k, £100k, £150k, £200k, £500k and then money no option. Please also use the market value of the car not the purchase price e.g. for £150k I’d imagine the 992 GT3 might get a mention however unless you are “special” you’ll have to stump up over £200k on the grey market…therefore this car would not be allowed for the £150k suggestion. Great channel and keep it up…without doubt this and the STG channel are my favourite car KZbin channel out there and the content is informative, funny and the cars you have, Sam, are attainable. You are not buying a £200k supercar every other week, wrapping it, exhaust, etc… you really are the content creator for the everyday person who’s journey and story is relatable to your audience 👍🏼

I also won`t expect a test drive.

You guys should do a podcast that discusses what makes a vehicle a supercar in this day and age. The goal post has moved a lot since the term was first coined for the Lamborghini Miura - widely acknowledge as the world's first supercar. In the past a supercar was simply defined for being sporty beautiful, a car with a sense of occasion, lots of theatre, with performance to match. But today, many cars have supercar performance, but to me are just very capable sportscars. Cars like Aston Martin Vantage, Audi R8, Corvette C8, Honda NSX, Merc-AMG GT S/GT R, Nissan GT-R, Porsche 911. Even McLaren categorises some of their models under "Sportscar Series". And with Ferrari, do you consider the Roma & Portofino M, as supercars? Or just very capable sportscars/GT cars? It could be an interesting topic to do.
@markmawer3 жыл бұрын
I'm in the market for my first supercar at the end of this year and have found it very useful to at least go to the main dealers to see the cars. In the last couple of weeks I've been to Aston Martin, McLaren, Ferrari and Lambo and it's been really helpful. I've learned that the Aventador is much lower than the Huracan and when you sit in it it's like you're looking out of a WW2 pillbox. The Huracan spider doesn't work for someone 6 foot tall. The Senna seats bruised my coccycx when I dropped into it and the P1 standard seat is too narrow for me. The 570S and 600LT looked like toys (to my eyes) compared to the 720S despite having much the same footprint. The AM Vanquish is just stunning and the startup sound of the V12 was awesome. Finally, the cars look very different in different colours. All of that without the need for a test drive. However, I've also done a supercar experience and going back for another one in a couple of weeks time. This was extremely useful to get a feel for the difference between sports and GT dynamics. So for example, despite the figures, the Cali T isn't a supercar, it doesn't make you want to drive fast. Sure it would be nice to test drive the cars before selecting which one is right for me but I understand the issues involved and to be fair they're all much faster than I can or should drive them. The real purchase decision is based on how it makes you feel and a lot of that isn't going to be revealed by a 10 minute test drive through a town.

In that case, if I had the money, it would be a Pista, but a realistic buy would probably be a Huracan Performante since it is relatively more affordable and doesn't suffer from lack of recognition/snobbery.

Tony really knocked it outta the park with his advise and comparisons, the problem is that some people can’t tell the difference between a good drivers car and a car that’s nice to drive, comfort, solidity, tech etc doesn’t make a car a drivers car. After owning 3 BMWs I decided I wanted to try a Mercedes, I had driven a few slightly older ones and was never convinced but thought I will try a new one, surely they are better, I drove one at a dealers and when the grinning pushy salesman said well you like it compared to your BMW, my response was honestly, it is a lovely car but I do not like the way it drives, I really couldn’t wait to get back in my BMW.

Tony says if your over 6ft you can't fit in a lambo which isn't exactly true because in the coupe's you actually have a bit more space, where as in the spyders you lose space which is when people over 6ft can't fit in a lambo comfortably. you can see this on Harry's garage review of the RWD EVO.

I wanted a 991.2 GT3 manual, drove one ride was way too harsh, my exige 430CUP was more comfortable and felt quicker and dynamically better, for me. So i tried a 991.2 GTS manual for a week. Did not like the 7 speed box at all, was enough to put me off. So test drove a 991.2 GTS PDK and that was really good but after 30 mins I got bored, also tried a T felt slow and dull. So what porsche was na / 6 speed/ newish and fun? 981 spyder. Tried that and loved it. Bought one and enjoyed it for 18 months. I always need to test drive a car. The McLarens I have owned have been different. I wanted them because they are carbon tubbed and have revolutionary design not evolutionary. My 12C was a great car but dynamically not as much fun as my Exiges but quicker, S class comfortable and 36mpg useful on the 13k miles euro tours we did in it. The 675LT however is on another level. 20 months, 8k miles and no issues at all, it is the most complete and exhilarating car I have ever driven and the perfect supercar. Its even risen in value. I think, for once, Tony is partially correct, you will already have a short list based on desire, aesthetics and memories. The worst is when a test drive doesn't live up to those expectations (458 for me too which led me to McLarens) which is why it is essential, here I disagree with Tony, once you have honed in on your preferred weapon of choice. That's when it gets difficult when your 1st choice is in the bin and you need to find something else.....

They give you overs if that’s where the market is. Porsche dealers cannot sell a brand new car over list but can sell a used one at whatever price they want. This is where the daft racketeering comes from. You’ll be massively favoured to get a GT3RS if you have a GT3 you bought from them. They got your money the first time when it was new, then they’re getting your money for the RS and more importantly they’ll make a fortune on your trade-in GT3. That’s why they aren’t interested in a new customer who just wants to buy a car. It’s a load of rubbish really, all this “you have to form a relationship with your dealer”. Bollocks! I don’t form a relationship with the guy I buy a fridge, TV or wardrobe from. They have a high opinion of themselves. 🙄 Luckily I like old stuff so don’t need to get on the daft dealer merry-go-round.

I would love to drive a bright orange Lambo but at traffic lights you would sink into your seat. A red Ferrari cruising through the South of France? Wonderful. In the UK you feel like a show off (hence the parking in London comments) Is there a happy medium? Probably not. Modern classic Ferrari? Yes! 355, 360, F430.. etc. There is nothing that ticks every box. A GT3? Maybe, hence the £100k over list. I have an early Emira coming. I know, I know Lots of trouble usually serious... Sam does not like the new f type. Nor does he love the project 7. Imagine if he had just gone and bought one and felt this way. Good thing he got a test drive! I hope he manages to get the project 8 because that is a truly special, bespoke car.

I cant count the number of times a premium dealer has said "perfect condition" and then when you drive it theres ticking, rubbing, pulling whatever. I've sat in cars, drove it down the block turned around and gave it back because its trash. When its more expensive: Once you deposit money on a car you should be able to drive it, if its just a regular premium car then right off the bat the 'normal' thing is for you to test drive it

STOP GETTING BOND WRONG! Great episode as always, but the Bond knowledge had me feeling like Alan Partridge.
