Behold, the Lamb of God! - Bishop Barron's Sunday Sermon

Friends, we return this Sunday to Ordinary Time, and the Church gives us a rather extraordinary reading from the first chapter of the Gospel of John. Seeing Jesus, John the Baptist says something that we repeat at every single Mass: "Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world." Many Christians don’t know what this phrase means; they think that it has to do with Jesus’ gentleness or innocence. But John is drawing our attention here to who Jesus was-and the Good News of what he did for us on the cross.

I also converted from Anglicanism in 1978, when I was just a boy of 19. Now if I go inside an Anglican church [for instance to attend a wedding or funeral or for an ecumenical event], it feels so empty compared to a Catholic Church. Also note that an Anglican 'eucharistic service' is NOT the Mass, as the Anglicans lost the apostolic succession in the late 16th century. [unlike an Orthodox Liturgy which is a valid - but schismatic - celebration of the Sacrifice of the Mass, as the Orthodox maintained Apostolic Succession].

Yes, thank you Bishop Barron! No one ever talks about how the sacrifice of Christ replaced the rituals at the temple and without that what Jesus did does not even makes sense. Jesus is speaking to a particular people at a particular time. Yes the messages have meaning for us, but without that context we loose the message.

This is the powerful phase I heard all the time in the church and I acknowledge it as well. I know that Jesus is the Creator of the world and all that is in it, that He is our Savior who loves each of us and who died on the cross for us, who teaches us compassion and forgiveness, the friend of all, healer of the sick, the giver of peace to all who will listen and believe in Him. Also, I Thank Jesus for our Lord, for the blessings he has bestowed on my life, and for loving me so unconditionally. He has provided me with more than I could ever have imagined. He has surrounded me with people who always look out for me. He has given me family and friends who bless me every day with kind words and actions. God has a purpose and plans for me to prosper and grow spiritually in Christ faithfully for I have an eternal future in Christ as He promises. Joolz ......to a modern human being the sacrifice of animals is barbaric and cruel and those teachers you mentioned as giving tons of stories about sacrifice and presenting a human being as an ultimate sacrifice to appease an angry deity is appalling to good human beings. I would not call such teachers wonderful . If God punished Jesus ,instead of the guilty party , it was act of staggering injustice , for he punished the one person in this universe who was totally innocent.

Bishop Barron, thank you, as usual for for your life giving homilies. I agree that only Jesus knows what is really wrong with "us" and the only one who can fix "us", is Him. I know you , like others, are looking for an analogy to explain why a sacrifice of blood is necessary and you correctly point to the historical reality of blood sacrifice throughout the history of humanity. Yet I do not think we really know the ultimate reason for the necessity of a blood sacrifice. Only God knows. This is simply a mystery. However, I do agree and understand that the mass is a sacrificial act and yes Jesus is the the "Lamb of God" the one who is sacrificed for the forgiveness of our sins. I know, I and all of humanity, are sinners and require Jesus's salvation, through hid blood sacrifice. I know there is no other chance for eternal life, after death, except through Jesus's sacrifice. Yet, the reason a blood sacrifice had to be performed is ultimately a mystery that I must accept, it is beyond our knowing. Thank you for your You-tube presence over these past years. You have followed the "middle way" like your mentor, Thomas. There is too much negativity and hatred coming from the extreme right and the extreme left have left the teachings of the Church. Both extremes are hurting the Body of Christ. God Bless you and your team.
