Passive means it doesn't maintain the input signal voltage at the multiple outputs. Buffered means it maintains the input signal voltage at the multiple outputs. The module does require power - but the power is only being used for the gate switching circuit (the top section). You can easily see the power circuit doesn't connect to the multiples in the bottom part. I have posted a pic of the rear of my module over on my discord server: bit.ly/ranzeediscord in the #synths-and-gear room with today's date stamp. You can easily follow the circuit traces to see that they are only connecting each multiple across the rows. There isn't any connection over the columns or to the power circuit. I won't be answering any more of these questions and will be pinning this answer.

@@ranzee Hi there. I know this Video is old but ive just finish off my 1 ever Behringer EuroRack GO. Anyways So i was interested to learn about the gate thing. So i used the following ...Behringer 112 Dual VCO & 121 Dual Filter VCO & 150 RING MOD/NOISE/S&H/LFO. I did all connection as you did from LFO to everything else. But i still just get a constant signal. Not sure what i'm doing wrong. The LFO part works fine .....

@@thepcgamer2169are you going VCO to Gate 1 IN, Gate 1 OUT to VCF and the LFO can be in either Voltage High or Low (underneath the gate in/out sockets) ?

My very next purchase is going to two quad VCAs and more stacker cables, I hate degradation and that’s the best way I’ve found to avoid it and the extra juice sometimes provides some interesting sounds I didn’t know were there! I woul fill a 84hp just with quads if I had the money, ahh, Someday! Lol

I wasn't going to bother with a 173 but I might now. I sold my original system 100m to make space AND a profit. One disadvantage is that each of my 191J 5 module racks had a lot of multiples, so together with tiptop stackable cables a 173 I begrudgingly admit partly compensates. But I'm trying to convince myself that the gates are more useful than I imagined, so now to continue watching!

Hi...great vid. The examples are great but I still don't quite grasp what the gates do from a technical perspective. In my understanding, usually a gate is either open or closed (ie note on\off); are these opening and closing at different degrees based on the cv they receive? Any info would be appreciated.

Hi, these are (from the manual): signal gates (switches) with buffered audio inputs and outputs for immediate signal switching. This provides users the option to choose between a control gate operation, non-inverting (active high) input or an inverting (active low) input. And that means (from me): That you can put a signal (CV or audio) into the gate and control whether it opens based on either another gate signal (active high) - or it's inverse (active low). So my example of the video shows this with the LFO triggering both the high and low gates (on gate 1 and gate 2) and producing an "arpeggiated" effect with the oscillator. You can use these as logic events too - you could plug a modulation sequencer into this and have it fire a gate based on a sequence over time. There's so many uses - best bet is to head on over to some well known forums and search away.

A separate question. Do the leds on the filter sliders relate to CV modulation, or are they just there for looks ? Oh nice video by the way, I had imagined how it might work , but this provided clarity and cleared up what kind of multi it had. Cheers!

Great video! I do have a question though. When would you need to use an 'active' mult, as opposed to a passive mult?
@ranzee
@ranzee 5 ай бұрын
Hey again. Great question! Active or buffered mults are used to maintain the concurrency of voltage over the division of the circuits. That means if you place an input voltage it will divide that same input voltage equally over the output copies and then you wont lose any performance of CV. This is essential for duplicating v/Oct and envelopes (among many others). Passive mults are better for simpler tasks - in some cases they can help with things like gates and audio tasks.
@jebusrice5550
@jebusrice5550 4 жыл бұрын
From what I've been reading the mults are buffered on all 4 connectors so it doesn't matter which is plugged in first. Thats certainly what the ads say - "6-channel multiples with four buffered connectors on each channel". Would it be a pain to ask you to have a look at the circuit boards and see if the connections are going to op-amps or just connected directly? Thanks for the video by the way, have subbed :)

I thought passive meant its not powered. But if it wasn't powered, wouldn't you start losing signal voltage as you plug in more than 2 into a multiple row?
