Behringer B-1 Condenser Mic Review

Today I review the Behringer B-1 Large Diaphragm Condenser. This thing is boosted 10dB in the higher frequencies while the mids and lows are relatively flat. This gives the microphone a somewhat thinner, more sibilant sound. I think it may work well for singing in a mix, but it may be over boosted for many other applications.

I purchased a Berhinger B-1 in 1999. I upgraded the capsule a few years ago with a K-47 capsule. My B-1 has been a solid reliable mic that I've recorded with thousands of times. In fact it sounds better than many so called high end mics. Lastly virtually every mic requires some EQ so the fact that the B-1 required EQ is par for the course.

The B1 being over boosted to 10db is probably good for low voiced bass people which could give clarity to their speech rather than hearing it like they are eating the mic in low voices .

My Dad bought one of these about 15-20 years ago when he was in a band. Passed it on to me about 5 years ago, and it literally just died yesterday. Its a really great microphone if you ask me, and now much cheaper than what he paid for it. Although, I may look at the NT1 as a replacement.

I've been using the B1 for about 8 to 10 years. Your review is dead on pretty much. I use it for singing, VO and acoustic guitar, mandolin and ukulele. I have to throw some eq in for the spruce/rosewood acoustic, but my cedar/mahogany needs very little since the boost the mic has is complementary to darker sound. It is the only condenser that I have ever had but its been doing fine. Honestly it is a definite upgrade for vocals from my sm57, at least for me and those few others that I have recorded.

I just got one of these in the mail, partially because of your comment and this video. I am very surprised with how good this mic is for what I paid. I have an AT2020 that I modded with a new circuit board and capsule, and the B-1 is much better for singing vocals than either the stock or modded 2020. I do find that the B-1 isn't quite as strong on some other sources that I've tried it with but I have other mics so not at all a problem for me. This B-1 is pretty flattering on my voice and seems to mix well.

I've been offering freelance Voice Over services for about two years now, and I usually use the AT-2020; Shure SM57; and MXL 770. But, to be honest, I am considering getting this as an emergency/backup mic. Maybe even for a travel mic.

With that much of a high end boost I don't think this is justifiable at $100. It looks solid and does have the high pass and -10 dB pad, but unless you're recording drums or sound effects I doubt you'd need the pad. There are so many options (including used gear) in the same price range. You could get the AT2020 for the same price, you could get the MXL V67G, 990, or 770 for significantly less, you could get some higher end stuff used as well. If you got this at a reduced price then maybe, but if you're just going to be using it for singing, voiceovers, or with an amp then there are a lot better options.
@Up_All_Night
@Up_All_Night 6 жыл бұрын
Sounds fine to me. I don't think I'd pay ~$30 more than for an MXL V67g, but the MXL doesn't come with a shock mount or that sweet case.

Neewer also has one. I don't know how good it is since I only bought for making videos if there's too much noise for a condenser. I don't remember the model but Shure has a dynamic available for around $40 IIRC, so you could look for that model, I'm sure it would be cheaper used.

It may not matter to anyone, but I feel this mic is best used as a broadcast/podcast mic with the rolloff/high-pass switch engaged. Throwing that switch allows me to get a fist away from the mic for a good up-close, personal sound, like for a broadcast. With the neutral setting engaged, this mic is best used AT LEAST a thumb and pinky away for those with higher-pitched voices, and for myself, at least a thumb and pinky + a fist away for voiceover and singing. Otherwise, it's a smooth, low-noise mic. Paid less than $60 on some crazy sale Amazon were having at the time.

What about volume output and background noise compared to Behringer C-1? I found the C-1 very low in volume. To get enough volume you have to raise the gain up so much... and it produces a quite annoying amount of background noise. Please let me know! Thanks for all! :)
