Behringer DeepMind - Let's Build a... Generative Patch!

Күн бұрын

At the end of last year I posted a couple of generative jams on the Behringer DeepMind. I received a number of questions about what a generative patch was and how you might go about putting one together - so that's what we're looking at today.
It's a bit of a long one, but I think we do travel to some very cool sonic areas.
Here's the Mylar Melodies video I mention in the intro: • An Intro to Making Gen...
And here's a link to my free ambient EP: oscillatorsink....

@@OscillatorSink I was wondering if at some point you could demonstrate different ways to utilise the Mod envelope? Unless of course you've already done that in one of your other DM6 vids?
@OscillatorSink
@OscillatorSink 5 жыл бұрын
I suspect I've done it here and there but not specifically a video on it. Pretty sure I would have used it on the Deepmind drum machine tutorial. The obvious place to start is to use it to modulate the pitch of Osc 2 when it's being used in sync mode for that classic sync sound - but you can assign it to anything of course - I like it doing PWM to get a sound which starts thin and opens up. And remember it can loop so you can use it as an LFO too.

@@squareeyedgit that's very kind! I imagine that the ambient pad and drum machine tutorials will feature it for sure, but I probably used it on most of them I'd imagine, even if just for little tweaks.

coming from modular I have been searching for a polysynth to add into my process. I have been on the fence between this and something with those familiar patch points like a semimodular. My main question has been how mental can I get with the modulation on the Deepmind - you've definitely answered that question! This is a seriously deep synth and will easily be finding a home in my studio. Thank you so much for really getting into this ❤️

Yeah, they're not joking about the "Deep" part of the name! The Mod Matrix is super comprehensive, but a lot of the stuff that's usually "pre wired" can be altered from inside the menus, so you don't even have to use the Mod Matrix for a lot of things!

Yeah, you've made some good moves there! I'd maybe address the effects section - lengthen that reverb, make the delay darker and up the feedback. Generally go for longer and slower, so you can make the envelopes much slower as you've done, but you can push that change harder if you slow down the two LFOs so they don't trigger so often - that'll also give you space to really push the effects. One other thing to look at - if you look on my channel for the video where I build an Ambient pad on the Deepmind - there's probably ideas you can steal from there and combine into this patch; especially the way I set up the reverb on that patch. Glad you're having fun with the patch and exploring how you can make it your own! Exactly what I hope people will do with these tutorials 😊

12:24 reminds me a lot of Hans Joachim Roedelius' works as well as some of Cluster. Tracks like "Zum Wohl" from the Album Sowiesoso or the track "Die Bunge" from the album Cluster & Eno" :) The same kind of playfulness, positive vibes & delightfully sequenced appeal. And i LOVE that kind of sound. I've been playing with the thought of getting the Deepmind (6 or 12) myself for almost a year now but it's definitely finding its way into my instrument selection. After having sold my Korg Poly 61 years ago, it'd be nice to have an all analog Polysynth again. And not just a virtual analog one, like my Roland Gaia or Korg Microfreak.

I'd say so, they can cover some of the same ground, but they have pretty different vibes. Of course, if you were in that kind of budget, you could also be considering, for example, a couple of Neutrons which obviously is a very different proposition, but they can be polychained, played paraphonically, have that vibey delay and, if course, you have the semi modular element to them, so if you're into more... esoteric sounds, they might scratch that itch. I'm not recommending that idea above the XD if what you want is a polysynth, but just putting an interesting idea out there 😉

I would say that once you learn what elements don't need to be "patched" via the Mod Matrix, you have a huge number of potential connections you can make. The modulation options are huge and I don't even touch on the arpeggiator or control sequencer here in this video. 4 FX slots with multiple routings including feed back... If you're willing to dig in, I think you'll find lots to explore!

@@OscillatorSink Thank you for your response. I had originally been wrestling with either purchasing the DM12d or a Soma Labs Lyra-8 - and I know that seems like a hugely odd choice to wrestle with as they are completely different beasts and most people go into gear purchases knowing what they need or what hole they are trying to fill in their setup. For myself though, as far as hardware goes, I currently only own a Deluge and an Organelle, and was just looking for something fun to expand into - no real clear direction besides liking the Juno'ish sound of the DM and after seeing your video, the generative aspects of it, and then of course the beautiful experimental choas of the Lyra-8. After your reply, I think I can safely say that I'll be purchasing the DM12d - if only because I think it will be more flexible for the time being. Thanks again for your input and I really love your channel! Blessings!

Thanks for explaining your way, but I didn't understand anything. Now I listento that patch more than an hour and there is no end :) ... it goes deeper and deeper - the sound tells itself a story with an absolutely uncertain outcome. I already wanted to give up the DP because I don't really like the sound and I just don't understand anything, but after this patch ....?!

Surely, the only reason this series of vids are being down-voted is because they're so gripping that watching them prevents one from making music preferring instead to watch someone else do it.

Question: with the amount of FX that deepmind12 offers, can you think of a reason that someone would need a external FX pedal?
@OscillatorSink
@OscillatorSink 5 жыл бұрын
Good question. I'd say yes - but only if you had a specific need, required more hands on control or you had an issue with the particular tone of the built in effects . The built in effects give you all of the generic and some esoteric effects, and then you can do crazy stuff with routing. As an example though, if I wanted a really glitchy effect, granular looping kind of thing, I'm not getting it from the Deepmind. The Deepmind doesn't give me a great spring reverb sound, so I'd want something external for that. If I wanted to perform with a lot of real-time tweaking of mutipl effects parameters, I'd want something external for that too. But like I say, those are specific requirements, and most of the time the built in effects will make you very happy indeed!

Looking forward to selling my guitar to buy this synth. Is the deepmind 12 worth the extra money for a synth/key beginner?
@OscillatorSink

That really depends on whether you think the 6 notes of polyphony is limiting to you. Personally, if you can afford it and you've got the space I'd go for it - I don't regret getting the 6, but the extra 6 voices of polyphony wouldn't go to waste if I had them. I think the desktop version is the best deal if you already have a controller keyboard you like.

Great content! Have you had trouble with the deepmind noise floor / 60hz ringing? Wanting to solve my only problem with an otherwise great keyboard.

I really liked the video thank you. To be honest it was quite dark so I could not see many of the slider settings and the edit screen blocked what you were doing with your left hand at times so I was never able to duplicate your sound - too many weird artifacts and drifts resulted. A minor thing though in the scale of learning dm6.

If you get stuck on the slider settings, remember that every change is also shown on the display. As I started with a initialised patch, the starting position of the slider is irrelevant.
