Thanks for the chart,, I own the original and I’m very tempted to buy the Behringer. What’s your thoughts on this comparison video, would you say it’s 1:1?
@shogunai

The craziest part of this video is that the couple of times I did notice a difference, I actually thought the Behringer sounded slightly warmer in the low end. 100% buying this little badboy. I can't wait for 10 years from now when people have forgotten about it being cool to hate on Behringer and you can pick up second-hand, authentic sounding, analogue synthesisers for the price of a round of drinks. What a time to be alive! :D And as always, fantastic comparison.
@XanderEwald
@XanderEwald 10 ай бұрын
I don’t think „warm“ is a sonic quality that many original users of the Pro-One particularly desired though. It’s much more associated with the „cold“ and aggressive sound of 1980s genres such as electro, techno, wave, industrial, EBM and the such.

I recalibrated my pro one last year, had it from new, bought in 82. Think I did a recalibrate in the early 90's, but took my time this time and made sure it was spot on, which is really hard work with sensitivity of the tuning and scaling pots. What a difference to the sound though, never sounded so good.

Excellent info and video, I just got my Pro-1 yesterday and am loving it, I had access to a Pro One back in the 80's [band mate] I had forgotten how big they were!! BTW Thomann are now sending UK plug adapters for UK bound purchases, but I'm sure that they did that as a rule anyway, I only mention it because I noticed on your intial PRO-1 vid that you didn't get one.

ashleyhaller have a SC Pro-One and the U-He Repro. They both sound great, and remarkably similar. Except that I have one ProOne, but as many Repros as my CPU can handle. And it has programmable patches. And doesn’t need an unreliable midi cv converter. Or require contacts to be cleaned from time to time. Or have keyboard bushes that deteriorate over time. Bottom line. On its own it sounds great. In a mix it sounds great. And it’s $149 .

I really didn't want any more synths, but after watching this very informative review...I'm sold. How true (& ironic) about the build: I had two Pro One's back in the day...Compared to my CatSRM, they felt quite flimsy indeed and required somewhat frequent technical assistance. All that said, the Pro One is still my favourite monosynth.

It's an almost accomplished replica of the SCI Pro-One, apart from envelope generators. What I found testing 3 units is they are ok on the short side but not so much on the long side: Filter Env Attack barely reaches 3.6 seconds, Decay 13 s, Release 28 s; Amplifier Env Attack 6.5 seconds, Decay 18 s, Release 32 s. I sent a video to Behringer support and they replied this is "as expected".

Thanks for that. Looks like another for my mobile rack! I suspect your Pro-One seems to have been calibrated wrongly at some time in its history. Mine is in tune with tuning at near 12 o'clock and the oscillator tuning knobs around 12 o'clock. That would sort out the sync range restriction you mention. Also, I'd suggest you don't get your original's keyboard 'fixed', but instead replace it. There's a chap on the net who supplies modern replacements. Both of my originals have new keyboards now and they make a huge difference to the playability of the synth.

What a time to be alive. Roland and DSI have both been complacent in their own ways for years... Roland is stuck in a bizarre paradox of cashing in on their 80s classics with VA "clones" that for the most part none of the synth fanatics wanted. For at least 30 years people have been begging Roland to just reissue an actual analogue TB-303, to the point where dozens of clones have been made by other companies since the 90s. And instead, they give us an overpriced VST in a silver box. Meanwhile, Behringer releases an actual analogue 303 for half the cost of Roland's digital emulation. The JD-XA was the only innovative thing they've done in years, and they've all but abandoned it, plus their new flagship "Jupiter" synth is an overpriced hunk of junk. And then DSI is guilty of cashing in on their brand name and price gouging everything they release, to the point where it's more expensive than what the average enthusiast is able to afford. Sure, they're quality instruments, but there's still an element of snobbish greed at play. So I'm delighted to see Behringer come and hopefully dethrone both companies and make analog gear accessible to the average person. Like Korg, they actually LISTEN to what the public wants.
@Ellende
@Ellende 4 жыл бұрын
Not maybe the place to be bitching about Roland, but I completely agree.
@ChristineLeeMusic
@ChristineLeeMusic 4 жыл бұрын
Roland's days are numbered unless they change their attitude. The customer is always right. They were foolish. They could have made a VCO Jupiter-16 with an arpeggiator that clocks to MIDI, with built in effects and probably sold it for $20,000. But now that Behringer and Korg have their very affordable VCO analogs out, it's too late for Roland. Sequential is too expensive. This Behringer Pro 1 makes the sounds I need and that is all that matters - not the brand name.

@masonarcher2998

Nuh uh. DSI isn’t gouging, they’re just making quality instruments that actually are comparable in price to similar models from other companies. There’s no way you’re going to convince me that a Pro 3 and a Korg Monologue belong in the same category in terms of quality. I am an average enthusiast and SAVED to buy a Sequential synth because it’s worth it. DSI/Sequential is making pro-grade hardware, if you’re an “average enthusiast” why would you expect to get pro-grade gear on the cheap? Behringer is barely innovating and are recycling classics and eventually you’re going to have to make something new or people are going to get bored. DSI and Roland will be just fine. Just because you’re mad you can’t afford higher tier synths doesn’t mean the companies making them are gouging.

Mine finally came off backorder and should be here by Christmas Eve! I love these clones. Happy with the Model D. Thinking Wasp next or the K-2 simply because I can barely read the graphics on the Korg MS 20 Mini and the Behringer's look bolder. Great little controller there. Is it mounted in a rack or just positioned that way? Sorry if it's already been discussed in the 324 comments. Cheers!

Thanks Starsky, for a brilliant video. My own Pro-One needs a lot of work (new keyboard, new power supply - I get a lot of mains hum, and a good clean). It'll cost a lot! It makes more sense to me to get one of the new Behringers. It's simply stunning how good it sounds. I was in a group which had two pro-ones and they sounded different to each other so I am amazed that this new one sounds so close to an original - almost impossible to tell them apart.

Great channel, Starsky Carr. You are the synth nerds synth nerd, meant 100% as a compliment! What I enjoy most is your love of synths, going right into the details (yes!) and fun, none detracting from the other! Both synths are beautiful, love the Behringer especially, I like the size, rack mountability, quality that comes from mass production, MIDI, reliability. As for Sequential, thank you for making the original synth 40 years ago. Many if us still appreciate this in 2021. Sequential are a great company, really like the direction they are going in too with the Prophet 6 and new Prophet 5 revision 4.0. Who would have thought back then in 2021 there would still be new reissue PRO 1s being made and new Sequential Prophet 5s? I believe there is room in the market for all these synths (and more). I love plugins AS WELL, especially have a soft spot for TAL synths, great small developer with a great sound. What a great time to be alive and be into synths of all types, brands and price ranges!

I haven’t had the chance to play an original Pro-One but I’d say the main difference between the two for me as a hands on player would be the lack of an available keybed with 37 keys that compare to the original. I’d really like for Behringer(or sequential) to release a full sized version. Other than that, the Behringer Pro-1 is by far my favourite synth at the moment.

the as 1 is based on prophet 6 not 1 tho. its a completely another think. behringer did a masterpiece with this one. might be the best behringer clone!!!!! i love mine to death!!! and i had an original back in the dayz. it feels like it came back to me!!!

@@TheNimasan The AS-1 is quite similar to the Pro-One compared using the same features. There’s a very good video by Lesindes (I think that’s the channel name) about that. Prophet 6 and 5 bear the same resemblance. There’s a great video about that but I can’t remember the channel name...

Fantastic comparison. I watched and also looked away. Wow! I can hear the Moog’s and Roland clones as being different (but great all the same) but this is wow. I’m glad you articulated one thing I thought which is your ability to tweak them on the fly. Matching positions on pots doesn’t tell you about sonic similarities IMO, more design ones. Subscribed, thanks lots

Only at 34:30, I felt quite a difference in envelope retrigger behavior on the soft bass patch, the original connecting notes much snappier, in comparison it's almost as if envelope didnt retrigger in the Bro 1... Was there any difference in setting there or is this the synth itself?

Very helpful vid!, I have a techy question though......on your Behringer pro1, if you have both oscillator frequency knobs turned to the left do they give out the same pitch?, and do you get the same pitch if they're turned fully to the right?, on mine osc B is giving out a pitch a fair bit below osc A when both set left, and osc B isn't high enough when both are turned to the right.... I know there are " osc scale" " osc offset " and "osc trim" trim pots on the board, but have no idea what will affect the issue I have, just wondered if you've come across this before!
@StarskyCarr
@StarskyCarr 4 жыл бұрын
Osc 1 pitch is fixed to the main tuning the knob below the wave type is the pulse width. Osc 2 has independent tuning, so if it’s fully left it’s (I think) about a fifth below osc 1. So yes that’s normal behaviour. It’s easy to miss the graphics when they’re so compact!

@@StarskyCarr I got in touch with Berhinger themselves, when they saw the video I'd sent, they told me it was not behaving correctly and needed to be calibrated, basically the two frequency knobs should give out the same pitch when both set at say 3 to the left of the dail, or 4 to the right and so on..... it's been sent back on their request to have it calibrated properly, see how it sounds when I get it back!

Why is the filter on the Behringer slightly more closed than on the Pro-1? It's either that, or they're just really that different...

A question for the pro-1: Does the external Input go though the filter, lfo and envelopes just like the oscillators? Because would that make it possible to use (polyphonic)samples, played on a computer with midi keyboard, to replace the oscillators (and still trigger the envelope by connecting the same midi keyboard to the synth but with both oscillators mixed to zero)? (also, I suppose it wouldn't get additional noise to my input since it uses the same knob on the mixer, or does it? Please let me know.

Yes, but it needs to be at eurorack level, which is a much louder duh al than most stuff. Plugging in a standard audio out from something will be far too quiet.

Everything about the sound of the Pro One is the 5 CEM chips inside. Behringer cloned those pretty much exactly and has been manufacturing them under CoolAudio. So it's no surprise at all that these two synths are virtually identical in sound as they are closer clones than anything Behr have yet done.

At 34.30 you can hear that the Behringer sounds lighter and thinner, or is it because the original is a little louder? I can really tell it is louder. I wonder if Behringer will create a mark 2 with higher-grade components later.

Much like the model d, it seems it's out of stock and pre order now estimates between December-March. I did do guitar center once but they have a thing for putting the earliest date to get buyers, reverb has a similar date. I know with the model d, it took me about 3 months to snag one after really really hunting it down with multiple cancels and pre orders. Def will wait till December to see what stock looks like.
