The Synth King

The Synth King

Күн бұрын

I had the honor to be part of the beta tester team for the Behringer UB-Xa. We worked very hard during the last few years to get everything spot on. All members of the team had a vintage OB-Xa and OB-8 for in depth comparison and measurement. This video showcases a few of the custom presets I´ve created for the UB-Xa. The sounds were recorded without any effects, dynamic processing or whatsoever straight into the audio interface. For the performances in split mode I´ve added a slight touch of reverb. The synthesizer in the video is an early preproduction unit with the firmware in development.Stay tuned, there is a lot more to come. Enjoy the music, like the video and subscribe to my channel.

Yeah I was gonna say, the Andertons demo felt very rushed and half-assed. Usually I like that reviewer for more all-around gear, as he doesn’t seem to take himself super seriously (which is great for overviews), but minor tweaks to presets and widdly-woodly aren’t enough to do justice to something claiming to be following in Oberheim’s footsteps. Sorry dude. 😅

Def sounds like a decent analog polysynth. Doesn't seem to have the same "sizzle" as the new OBX8 and something about the filter sounds slightly off (for an Oberheim), but with 16 voices, poly AT, and a price tag 1/3rd of the OBX8, I'm expecting a lot of folks won't be crying about the missing "sizzle" or slightly less-authentic filter. Und für das Video und Patch Programmierung, danke. Ist gute Arbeit.
@dankeplace
@dankeplace 2 жыл бұрын
And you're exactly right, having PAT and MPE functionality is going to win a lot of support for people who want a master Keybed with the ability to do DAW work as well as have 16 analog voices. My concern is how good will the keybed be, I know they did this for their CS80 clone but we will have to wait and see. Given there is a Desktop on offer too, we really do get best of both worlds. I personally love the sound, not really interested in chasing heritage sound because I don't want to do *JUMP* or anything else that is an 80s icon. I do want to create 80s type of music, which doesn't necessarily mean having an exacting sound to do it with. 5K USD is a ton of money when compared to $1500 USD

To be honest, I think a big part of it is Jack's overall playing style. He's a great player and I love a lot of his demos, but he doesn't necessarily play (or choose patches) in a very "Oberheim"-y way, if you know what I mean. He does lots of staccato, short release (think clav.) patches, funky bits, or gospel-y sounding piano parts, which is fine but not really what people are looking for in an Oberheim-style product demo. I even noticed the way he talked about it was like, "from what I understand, people interested in this type of synth might want to hear the filter," and so on. Obviously, the way he played it wasn't wrong but maybe not ideal for a "first glimpse" video of this particular product.

@@crnkmnky It's been 3 months and I can confidently say plenty of people are complaining about the price of the OB-X8, and they're not all Behringer fans from what I'm seeing. I see a lot of people who have modern Sequentials complaining about the price. The OB-6 is seemingly more appealing to many. Lets be real, genuine or not, it's overpriced. No matter how many basic presets they match semi-convincingly to the originals, it's not quite there. It's good sounding, don't get me wrong. I'll probably get one because it's as close as I'm personally going to get to owning that OB sound, but If I do I know I will be doing so paying an Oberheim name tax, I'll just call it. @@noimalma Have you ever looked inside the X8? Have you ever looked at Music Tribe's (Behringer, among a dozen more brands) facilities? Because if you had you couldn't call it a "synth sweatshop", not while being intellectually honest anyways. It's actually pretty awesome. It's like a mini city. Most parts, for any brand of synths, come from the same places. Asia, which use slave African mined materials. At least Music Tribe actually makes some of their own chips under the name Coolaudio. Not that it's all that much better ethically because much of the raw materials still come from slave labor. No, you can actually buy an ethically made guitar, you just have to hire someone to do it for you. Synths, that's a lot harder to come by, if it's even possible.

Andertons have done great demos for guitar, synth, and bass products, but when they pull off a turkey, it's a big, fat Butterball of a turkey. I've seen amp demos where everyone else got great sounds out of them with little to no effort, but somehow they managed to screw up royally from simply not following common knowledge practices in terms of speaker impedence, and or wattage matching. The synth sounds great, but I’ve yet to hear any sounds that are exclusive to the Oberheim lineage. Primarily the sounds I dig are all in Van Halen’s 1984 and RUSH’S Moving Pictures! Let’s hear those genuine Oberheim sounds and I’ll put my money down. I already own a DeepMind and it’s a great tool. I want this synth to work and sound 100% Oberheim!!! Just do it already and release it now!!!

Jump is not a genuine Oberhiem sound, it was recorded with a Marshall amp, so unless you have this with the UBXa, you're not going to get the same sound.

The power of the 1st & 2nd set of opening chords had me instantly weeping. Can't explain it other than the synth being able to hit me so hard with beyond powerful emotions that had me reflecting on life, the remaining time I have left. It fucking got real with me and shook me down to my very core. Absolutely beautiful in every way. This is what's it's all about. Very very nice. Although, call me crazy, but I didn't hear the Oberheim tone anywhere in there. Not like on the OB-X8 demo which oozes fatness and cream. This is missing some high-end sizzle as well as a creamy bottom end. Sounds closer to a Prophet 5 than an OB-Xa actually (overall tone-wise, excluding the stereo panning of course). Still a very nice sounding polysynth. Just not an Oberheim.

Decided to come back to this video again despite me receiving my OB-X8 last week and totally blown away by it’s beautiful sound. I like the UB-XA for the fact that its sounds Oberheimy but a bit less in your face aggressive . Might spring for one of these to go side by side with OB-X8. I like the tone of the UB-XA better than the similarly priced Korg Prologue 16.

Great demo! 👍 What's the keyboard quality like? I need an economically priced synth to replace my faithful fixed-velocity DX27 as my full-sized synth keyboard because my piano lessons are finally paying off! I'm not looking for MIDI master keyboard quality (I'm only fussy about weighted keyboards) - just something for those rare occasions when I want both hands on the keyboard but will earn its keep as an instrument in itself. There's plenty of used synths around but 80s and 90s synths don't float my boat.

I wouldn´t say game over for Oberheim ,having both,this UB-Xa and OB-X8 i would say ,the UB-Xa makes me like the pricy OB-X8 even more ,not that UB are bad ,because it´s not, but they are way more different in sound than you might think ,OB has a fatness and a drive that UB doesn´t match up to ,so as for many other vintage copies ,they are new instruments trying to get as close to original/vintage as they can ,but in the end they are completely new instruments with their own character despite their efforts to be "vintage sounding" and that´s not bad at all ,love Behringer for their efforts to make synths into cheap electronics for the masses.

Thank you for restoring faith in what was a much hyped instrument, only to suffer a lot of PR damage early on, thanks to that dreadful Andertons video. Behringer sent one of their first instruments to the wrong place, because Andertons did not do the UB-Xa any justice at all. I have an OB-SX and from what I heard in this demo, the Behringer UB-Xa captures the spirit of a classic Oberheim with enough room to be a synth in its own right.

A more than accomplished instrument, with an (foreseeably) affordable price tag, in the hands of a capable technician with the right skills as a keyboard player. It is heartwarming, to hear the reinstatement of such an historically authoritative synthesiser, through the resort to some aptly majestic musical moods. Sometimes people forget that the true scope of original electronic keyboards was to make the sonic worlds of the distant impossible available to the average man.
