The phase issue with the paralell bus with your 1176 insert is that every insert has its own delay. This causes comb filtering. You would need to have another 2 busses (for stereo) that your dry drums are routed to to match the delay. The fairchild (faircomp) FX can be nice on a drum bus with the mid side version to control the mid of your drums separate from the sides.

as far as the facing issue with the 1176, I was told to run to buses the second one will be compressed the first one will pass through the compressor, but won’t be active that will fix your phase issues and time

Correct, this would be the right way

I was about to comment the same thing. Compressor inserted on both channels puts both buses back in phase

When you mention knocking off the initial transient of the snare bottom, you can accomplish this as well by increasing the attack time on the gate. You can get the gate to the point that no transient comes through at all.
@jakerussellaudio6 ай бұрын
For sure! That’s definitely another option 👍

Great video. Thanks for sharing! I enjoyed listening to your approach, which is identical in some ways and completely opposite in others to mine. IMHO In a live situation you have to listen to the whole kit in context with the other instruments and what the room does to before deciding on what works.

Hi! Nice mix! Try gating the snare bottom with key from top snare, filter it to the right frequency and it let's you get even more control of the gate . And on your drum subgroup, you could smash the channel comp a lot more and just adjust the mix/parallel compression knob for a more upfront drummix, and you won't have to worry about phase issues with that insert point. Try 1-2 ms attack on the drum gates, much less prone to clicking and should work just as well. 🙂

This is a really great run through dude, thanks for sharing. I learnt a few good points here in the gate section with respects to the key frequency, so I'm keen to apply that. On the parallel compression for the drums, I use that and honestly love what it adds to the live sound. I don't use the FX rack units for that though, but rather just the standard compression within the bus. I do EQ as well, which may help what I get out of the exercise, but since using this method it's changed the game for me in a big way. I even setup guitars on a Parallel comp bus to bring in more grunt for them aswell, and in small amounts, it does just that. Im not running a serious PA system in terms of power and all, so I do find that I gotta pull it back a bit and keep on eye on how hard this is all pushing, but I personally enjoy the weight it all brings to the mix. Great video though, thanks for sharing!

There can be funny phase issues when doing it that way because of the latency induced by inserting the 1176(think it was 6.3ms)...the work around for it is to use the board compressor and use the mix knob to do the parallel compression. DBB audio has addressed this issue few years ago.

Yeah, unfortunately the X32 doesn’t have delay compensation on the mix busses. I’ve mainly kept away from using any effect rack compressor on the console as they are some of the largest causes of delay. I do have ann exception where I run fix rack compressors for master busses like FOH and Livestream cause they sound good and actually slightly correct for the delay between my FOH and stage monitors ;p. Love the video thanks, excellent and simplistic breakdown for mixing drums, don’t need any fancy techniques to make them sound amazing.

Thank you, this was helpful and inspiring. Btw. I would never pan the toms far right and left. That is so unnatural to the audio picture. Q - Would it be an idea to start the mix with having that stereo-sub compression first and then work backwards? Maybe the just might not be that much work for then tweaking every channel that hard.

How do you handle delay compensation for the drum buses with sending the P.drum bus to an 1176 and just using the stock comp.on the main drum bus, there will be some weird phasing issues from my test.

Take care of the drums first - go for double ply coated heads on toms (Aquarian Response 2 has thicker coating) plus coated reso heads. If that's not enough you can put cotton balls in. The cymbals are bit too harsh - even the Traditional Meinl Byzance models are more melow and musical than Zildjian K for example. Big and really thin, dark, overhammered plates will have less energy.

in terms of balancing drums with faders what's your order ?

Interesting! I’ve seen the effects return accidentally get routed back to the bus? Maybe check there. Hit the stereo effects return for the plate, sends on fader, and make sure it’s not going to any buses or anywhere else.
@arnoldmendez7106 ай бұрын
Why not use a DCA?
@torgejoris97136 ай бұрын
DCAs are „volume-only“, you can't eq or compress DCAs

Or you use both insert comp on both bus or nothing insert on both. Using an insert you are delaying this bus or channel.

LOT of kick.. and click.. from the kick ..... also it seems like the whole drum bus is like mashed to death with comp.. so the parallel comp is just comping what's already mashed to death.. its like praise and worship drums with a metal bands kick drum.. also.. the gate attack.. for me.. is NEVER set at zero.. that will introduce clicks and pops. It's just too fast. I like your approach for sure.. but.. stomping the fire outta drums is a really quick way to lose all the tone you gained by tuning them properly. MIC PLACEMENT IS ABSOLUTELY part of the win or lose game in drums.. live or studio.. keep your the good work though!
