Thank you... this has really helped me decide on what type of mixer to get....all the negative reviews on this mixer has to do with connecting your computer to the mixer and people ... not understand about Wi-Fi and security and how easy Wi-Fi is to interrupt....but now I know I can directly connect by ethernet to the mixer ..... otherwise if it was wifi-only I would not buy it....thank for your help..... have a good day

The best option is: if you have a router with 1or more lan ports (don't use wan port because it's for internet) you connect the device in one of these, and you can use the rest of lan ports for other wired connections, an also after this you can use the wifi from router (and you have significantly more speed in comparation with wifi client). You don't need a switch because the router also is a switch a with wifi and lan port for internet.
@AndrewBellous
@AndrewBellous 5 жыл бұрын
Yes, that would work well, but in this application the router was across the building. If you had direct access to the router, then using the available ports would be most efficient :)
@matkletamoravia8075
@matkletamoravia8075 Жыл бұрын
The problem with this method is you are dependent on the built in switch in the router. When the router goes down, it takes everything with it. The switch in the router drops out when the router drops out. Using and branching off of the separate switch keeps you hardwired connected if and when the router does fail. And it will fail at that one event that is the most important to date event thus far when using this mixer. The last method in this video is the only way I have my system set up.

Hi, so just to recap your favorite connection: Turn the remote slider to Ethernet position, hook up the mixer's Ethernet port to a switch, hook up at least one computer/laptop/what have you to the switch, hoock up a router to the switch and hook up any mobile devices necessary to the router over WiFi? Great video! Am trying to decide between the XR18 and the Soundcraft Ui24R.
@AndrewBellous
@AndrewBellous 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, that's how it should work. The switch was only necessary in this application because the router was some distance away in another room. If your router is close by and has enough rj45 jacks, just use the router, the switch isn't necessary.

@@AndrewBellous If you just use the router, you lose the hardwired connection if the router loses power. Won’t the switch avoid that scenario?
@AndrewBellous
@AndrewBellous 2 жыл бұрын
@@stevesheroan4131 yes, if you're using an unmanaged switch it could continue to function in the face of a power loss. But, the likely scenario is that if your router loses power, so will everything else. It's a rather specific problem. The point is that the switch isn't needed. I only put it in because the location of my router was in a different part of the building. If you're concerned about power loss, then a UPS battery backup will be better protection than hoping only part of the venue loses power.

@@AndrewBellous Thanks for the info! I was really thinking more about how things get randomly unplugged when there are multiple acts performing, especially in a “throw-and-go” festival type situation. Often guys never ask if it’s safe to unplug something, they just do it. Would I need to change any settings in the setup, or will everything just connect to the same IP? Also, thanks so much for your response. Your contribution here is greatly appreciated!

@@stevesheroan4131 a switch could be a good defense against that chaos. As long as the three way switch is set to cable, you shouldn't need to change any other settings to access the Internet.

I don't use Apple, I use PC products. I see the IPad has a lightning connection, which I believe is along the lines of a Thunderbolt/Type "C" USB. I have found success in PC world in networking two computers for audio and video with an ethernet - USB 3.0 adapter, and "Type "C". I see that they sell an ethernet - lightning adapter. Looks like a good one will run you a few bucks, but something you probably don't want to cut corners on, especially in a live setting. I hope that helps, and should work, especially since you're not, also sending audio, with the signal. Carl

I'm hoping you still monitor the questions on this video. I've recently started using the Xair16 and its been quite a humbling experience. I have yet to have a show where the wifi access point hasn't given me significant issues. I recently purchased an adapter so that I can connect the xair directly to my ipad via ethernet cable. My issue now is that in order to use the ethernet connection I must first connect through the access point, switch the ethernet settings over to DHCPS, and then move the network switch over to ethernet. There are numerous venues where I am simply unable to connect via the access point to take these steps, which just turns this mixer into a big paper weight for me. Are you aware of any steps I can take to permanently change the network settings so that I can simply plug and play with this mixer via ethernet? The manual has been of no help on this.
@AndrewBellous
@AndrewBellous 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, I still check in on occasion. With a PC or Mac, you should be able to connect a network cable (Cat5) directly to the device. I'd need to know more about your setup to be sure how to advise you. I would have expected the network settings to stay once you'd set them. If I understand you, you connect wirelessly through the internal Access Point in the soundboard, then switch to cable. Why not just use the access point? Is there a reason using the AP isn't an option? Sadly, I no longer have access to this device, so my ability to advise is limited to what I can remember off the top of my head.

So I bought a cheap Archer router & when connected discovers the iPad Pro [2nd gen] but not the XR12. Now my XR12 is also a $500 aud paperweight. . Unless I can get my pc to make the software change to DHCP which you say should make my XR12 discoverable. There is no XR12 S/W for pc, just a the XR18, so I’m unsure how making changes there on the pc will be maintained on the iPad XR12 S/W? Cheers, pierre from Oz . .tralia not the other planet.

Yes, that is possible. The Board will stay at the last settings you left it on when you disconnected. Switching over to the internal wifi router would allow you to connect with a phone directly to do your sound check, and then you could switch it back. Unplugging the physical cable wouldn't be necessary. Changing the switch setting would disconnect the wired device.

@AndrewBellous
@AndrewBellous 4 жыл бұрын
The reason for the switch is that I wanted multiple desktop computers to be able to access the XR18. The soundbooth setup had two computers, neither of which had wifi. The Internet connection was in the office, so I ran one ethernet cable to the switch, and then to the two computers. If your router was in the same physical location as the computers, or you only had one computer, the switch wouldn't be needed. If Internet access wasn't available, the switch alone would allow both computers to access the XR18, but without Internet Access :) It isn't a question of intelligence, it's just the video doesn't explain the full context of the space I was working in :)

I was connecting multiple computers and was across the building from where the router was physically. A switch without a router allows multiple computers to share access to the XR18. There is a three way switch beside the ethernet port. Left: Ethernet - use this to connect a hardwired connection, either through your router/switch or direct to the computer. Once connected, the X Air App should be able to find the device. Centre: Wifi Client - use this to connect to the router via wifi at your location, X Air App should be able to connect when connected to the same wifi router. Right: Access Point - when no wifi is available, use this to have the XR18 become it's own wifi hotspot - X Air App should be able to connect when your wifi enabled device is connected to the XR18's internal SSID. No. The mobile phone is used to control the levels on the auxiliary channel, but you would use one of the auxiliary outputs to hear audio, probably through a Headphone Amplifier, which aren't expensive. You can get a wired Headphone Amplifier for less than $50 or a wireless one for less than $200 if you search on amazon. Professional wireless in-ear systems that are much less likely to suffer from interference and have better audio quality go for around $1000.

That depends entirely on the equipment you're using and varies based on the wireless networking protocol you're using. Check the recommendations for distance on the box of what you're purchasing and consider whether you're going through walls and how dense they are.

Connect via USB. If your computer is more than 10' away, it's advisable to use an Active USB cable (built in amplifier) or a USB over Network Cable solution.

How many phones can you connect over wifi if you are using a 3rd party router? (I'm thinking of phones to use the Behringer in-ear monitor apps, for each band member)
@AndrewBellous
@AndrewBellous 5 жыл бұрын
There's a limit of four connections on the internal antennae where the phones connect directly to the device. I think that there isn't a hard limit, beyond what your IT system can handle if you're connected to a router. I've tested about a half dozen devices at the same time with no trouble. Being able to use an aux channel as a personal mixer for in-ears is a real strength. You've got 8 aux, and I think you'd run out of aux channels before you ran out of wifi channels :)

Your preferred method of using the networking...if I am using a 4-port wireless router, will I still need a switch? or do the ports on the router serve the same purpose as the switch?
@AndrewBellous
@AndrewBellous 6 жыл бұрын
The router should do the trick. I use the switch because the devices in question are far from the router in the setup I was working with and it's the quickest and cheapest way to tie those devices together.

No, you would not need a switch anymore. What you have is a 4-port switch/router that will automatically route packets to appropriate destination.

uh? the quickest and cheapest is CAT5/6 from PC to router.. Why stick an unnecessary switch between them (unless it's wireless)? You'll still need CAT/6 from switch to router (if not wireless).

Okay..please ignore the prior comment.....I get it. Using this method I can always have my ethernet hard wire from my laptop connected to the mixer ethernet port through the switch. If I want to go wireless to hear everything out front (before the show), I will disconnent from the ethernet, and connect to the router by way of the switch. After everything is mixed, I can go back to the hard wire ethernet connection with no fear of losing the connection for the rest of the show. Someone please tell me this is correct.
@AndrewBellous
@AndrewBellous 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Randy. Moving from hardwired to wireless is useful. It can allow you to hear the sound from wherever you want, but like you, I do like the security of not having to rely on wifi. There's nothing wrong with the procedure you've outlined, but I would take the precaution of muting the inputs until I had re-established the connection moving from wired to wireless and back.

Andrew, You have been a great help. I have installed the hookup exactly as you have outlined. I set the mixer connection to "Ethernet". I also connect my computer to the switch via ethernet cord. That gives me my wired connection. I have noticed that when I disconnect the ethernet wire from my computer, I still stay connected.....and that is great...but how is that happening? The mixer connection is still on ethernet. I can't figure this out.

Hi, Oscar. I do respond, but I usually only find time to go through the comments every few months. Networking can be tricky. I'm surprised that you had a router that was too old to be compatible. If all you are doing is connecting a desktop computer, or other device that can accept a network cable, then a simple desktop switch should work. Those are available for $10 or so. The Router would be necessary to connect it to the Internet and devices that don't have CAT cable jacks, such as a mobile phone or tablet. Seems like you got it figured out on your own, sorry I didn't get to respond in time to be helpful :)

Network cable and ethernet cable are synonymous. They both mean the same thing. I generally use either a Cat5e cable or Cat6. The most current standard is Cat7 or Cat6a. But, anything more than Cat5e will be more than enough bandwidth for the purposes of this equipment. When I say switch, I mean a desktop network switch. www.canadacomputers.com/product_info.php?cPath=27_1045_355&item_id=038090

If you mean XR18 as a wi-fi client, you will need to switch it to the middle position and you will have to know the password of the SSID you are connecting to. Hope this helps.
