Hey Maya 👋🏽 I'm Stacy! I'm a U.S. citizen that applied to a graduate degree program at Malmö University with the goal of making Sweden my permanent home. Even at 45-years-old, I am not afraid to reinvent myself. Admission notification is not until March 21st, but I know (speaking it into the universe......the environment.....these here interwebs) that I will be accepted to move there this summer. Great to see you [and your friend] there!!!

Likewise... I applied to Lund University and just hit 40--I'm from Jamaica. A bit nervous seeing that I may be the oldest student, but I'm going ahead with my gut and looking forward to starting a new chapter. I hope we both make it in the summer...🤞🏾

Maya as long as I've been a viewer since the NY days, I know you love learning and writing. I don't think you're giving yourself enough credit for your ability to excel academically. Not saying you need to jump into a doctoral program, but there's a wide range of programs from online ones to interdisciplinary. It's all about finding the right one for you and the right program mentor. And I know what you're thinking, "I'm a full-time mom + content creator, there's no way!" I used to work in the Marketing dept in a Caribbean university (love your island love btw). I interviewed people after they graduated for their social media pages. Almost without fail, every mother would say that they were able to finish the program because their child made them stronger / was their inspiration. The more you know! ❤
@krystallindsey3378 Жыл бұрын
Yes I was thinking the same thing. You can do it Maya!
Жыл бұрын
I don’t think it’s about not giving herself enough credit, it’s just what she said,”she knows what she wants.” I agree with you, she is always learning something and could definitely succeed academically…. However, her independent way of learning works better for her, when you go to college you need to follow a program it can be a little bit hard and even not necessary. Maya is someone that if she wants and is excited to learn more about skin care she will take a course (if she wants) or spend a lot of time googling info. During her search if she feels like she wants to know more about dry skin she will them focus on dry skin and find all the info about dry skin. The problem with college is that you can’t stop at the moment to learn more about dry skin since you need to move to a different topic and you need to spend your time wisely or you fail. I definitely wish I knew what I wanted so I could tell people to leave me alone 😂

I'm a black woman born and raised in Stockholm, Sweden. I would hate to live in a smaller city because I wouldnt be able to get easy access to makeup for darker skin tones or black hair care products. Stockholm is also a lot more mixed and more open to other cultures in my opinion. I would really recommend Stockholm! You can find countryside/rural places in the Stockholm area as well. You got me a bit emotional when you shared your connection with the sister from the Bahamas. I actually was born and raised there and it a rare thing to us Caribbean folks to explore places like these optionally. So on that note, I’m looking and really desire to explore new territories as such. Connecting with nature and experiencing the countryside that offers lush greenery, lakes and mountains. But I know diversity in these places would be limited when finding a place of belonging. So I am so appreciative to you Mya for sharing your ongoing life journey with us all these years. I know some of us are living vicariously through the lens of how life would be like if we were in your shoes, but at the same time you’re braved through it all victoriously even through hard times. Was the only Afro-Caribbean in my PhD program in Lousiana, then, the only black female professor at a university in Utah & then I moved to ATL & felt like I could blend in more. My research & writing is always about the Afro-Caribbean immigrant experience in some way. Feeling inside of & outside of a society simultaneously is such a destabilizing feeling sometimes but finding community & connecting more with family & culture is a MUST for survival. The only thing is I grew up uber religious, went through my atheist period after a major life event in my 20s, but now I'm more agnostic. 🤷🏾♀️

I am a fully persuaded Child of GOD. I rarely trust science but I totally am taught by the Holy Ghost because I do street evangelism. The Father has you planted there on the countryside so the Holy Ghost can use you to educate the people whom you encounter about Him (Mark 16:15-16). I believe Yahweh's plan for me is living out the rest of my journey in a small community somewhere. Dont know where yet. I am also inspired and am planning to go back and finish my education. I'm 60.
