Zihwa is a female tattoo artist in South Korea specializing in floral designs. In South Korea tattoos have long been seen as a symbol of violence, membership to a gang, or at the very least, rebellion against mainstream culture. But Zihwa is trying to change the country’s attitudes toward tattoo culture by showing people that tattoos are less about disrespecting social norms but more of a work of art and self-expression.
If you enjoyed Zihwa’s story, download our free community app MOGAO and discover untold stories from Asia and all over the world. Being the most diverse and global online community in the world, we can start a movement to get local insight into the latest current events and social issues from every corner of the world to the forefront and bridge cultural and social gaps. Edit: some people missintepreted that. They think I said she's the most popular tattoo artist in the world which I know is not true. It's just really rare to find a tattoo artist with more followers than her, which means she's pretty popular in the industry. Also people are saying "we only measure talent by followers nowadays" and that also wasn't at all what I said. Popularity doesn't measure talent. @junghoonkim559
@junghoonkim559 3 жыл бұрын
@@sacura605 ? how does being a woman in Korea make it difficult for her? You shouldn't believe everything media says unless you've actually lived in South Korea for a while. Foreign media (or media targeting foreign viewers) tend to overexaggerate certain things or be biased towards one side when it comes to South Korea. Idk if it was this channel or not but even with the spy cam incident in South Korea the video takes out the real fact that after the report the investigation team searched the whole of Seoul for months, yet found no spy cams. Also it never makes videos of feminists in South Korea calling men "criminals in their nature" and a professor writing public essay about men being insects with stages of pervertedness (from the Organisation of Philosophical Studies in South Korea). Do you know why? It's because this doesn't attract viewers from foreign countries because feminism is different in western nations. The mainstream wave of feminism in South Korea is vastly different; it's about degrading men, not about equality. Even the current president said he is a feminist and supported feminism, and the major Korean news channels are also very much biased (e.g. when the professor who wrote about men being insects got attacked by furious people in her online lesson meet, the news took out the information of her essay and only said "a professor gets attacked by female-hating crowd"). Those in their 40s and 50s won't look at youtube, so when they listen to the news they will just believe that it says. Being a man in Korea is very much harder than being a woman.

@@stonecat676I did indeed speak to my friends in South Korea, and it was clear they didn't support that kind of "feminism" in South Korea. The reason I put speech marks on the word is because I don't think what the "feminists" (or those who call themselves that) are doing in South Korea is for equality. Ofc there's good actual feminists in South Korea as well, but I dont think the current image of feminism in the country reflects them.

The problem with tattooing in South Korea is that the medical law simply does not make any exceptions, which means you need a license to do it. However, that's a license for medicine. It would therefore be good if laws were changed and they created a license specifically for tattooing. It's something which would benefit both tattoo artists and customers.

@@Sporkie It's not limited to them, but yes. Even America and Europe had the same stigma around it, and it can be noticed in the oldest generation, but they began getting tattoos purely for cosmetic reasons earlier. This means they simply have a headstart in the progress of removing that stigma. Unlike what a lot of people would like, these things take many generations to change. @@majesticoolmuffin7992 "lmfao did you read my argument?" If I didnt read your comment how would I respond to you quoting your exact words?? "im assuming the illegal activity YOU'RE indicating is drugs and weapons" Try extortion as well, which is a broad term that involves assault/harassment of all kinds to get what they want, whether it is financial, physical, threats to kins etc. So how is that "misogynistic" again? Youre literally just cherry picking 1 form of crime and victimising your gender on it. Also remember this, females are also the ones selling sex (even without the interference of men). Women also allow themselves to be sexualised. You honestly think women attract men with just their brains and personality? Physical attraction plays a part. Anything that increases ones physical appeal in attracting the opposite sex is by definition "sexualising" oneself. Dont even pretend women dont play a role in that. So much for your "misogynistic" society.

Being a Tattoo artist isn't technically illegal. Since you are sticking needles in, the government required a medical license that proves you know what you're doing medically. If you have a license then that means you have nothing to worry about, but if you don't, then you being an tattoo artist is illegal.

Its stupid to think tattos are bad or somth, its same for smoking, only 18+ can do that if they want, its thier live so they can get on thier body whatever they want, they take risks on thier own, its not like tatto workers apply tattos on them violently lol, they do job like all other people, if man take risk and he want thats his choice and thats it. What is bad about that? Ppl dont have logical thinking, bcs 95% in this world are stupud and thats sad to see, bcs we csnt evolve if we fight among ourselfs and grow more and more, whew.
