As a 3d and 2d animator, i see value in both mediums BUT i would say 2d has always delivered more statement and emotion than 3d animation. 2D delivers more expression because its far more improvisational. Our brain is allowed to fill in the gaps where details may lack, where as 3d is more often designed complete, and more liken to reality. Your given far more visual information, which ultimately reduces our imagination. Take Anime for instance, Anime is extremly finite. they only create exactly what needed to get the point across, The most minimum of frames. One frame held on screen for seconds yet, we never get the sense that something is missing, because our brains fill in the gaps. We find that 3d animations are often more enjoyable when it breaks reality, bending more towards aspects of 2d. As for character design both 3d and 2d artist often stray from originality, idolizing works created by those that influence them into the art itself, which leads to a 'standardization' of them medium and art. The pixar look, the disney look, etc. Or schools teaching future artist standardized styles and techniques, that visually and technically are impressive but have no absolutely no soul. 2d is liken to radio in the 50's before television. People listened to stories, and was left to their imagination which can go further than any visuals, because the brain delivers what is understood, representative of the content spoken. A spooky dark alley to me may look different to you. Iin radio, we all get what we want, as each listener is left to their own unique levels of imagination. But if put on film, imagination is removed, some can relate to what they see, and others dont. The same goes for 2d animation, enough is left of the table for our brain fills in the gap, 3d on the other hand doesn't leave any thing to be imagined. so not everyone get the fullness from it.

The idea that the industry wants to completely abandon 2d hand drawn animation (including schools not having it in their curriculum) is ridiculous. To me the difference between 2d and 3d is the difference between painting and sculpting. One doesn't negate the existence of the other.

I wouldn't say it's ridiculous from a financial standpoint, but i don't like doing 3 work at all, 2d is fun and looks better if you ask me

Im hanging on to my traditional skills because they're going to be considered "artisan" skills after this current gen of ToonBoom adult comedies and Dreamworks animators have had it taught out of them

Inspiring to hear other animators still passionate about 2D frame by frame! It has evolved over the years and the tools are progressing to make it easier... not easy but easier ;) For the most though, 2D frame by frame certainly stands out and has its nostalgia to it. Good interview!

I couldn't agree more. 2D will always have a special place in my heart. As an animator, I prefer 2D over 3D. 2D feels more expressive to me. Thanks for your kind words

Ahh, so refreshing! I am also a 2D animator, and I am struggling with what she says, time and that there's not many clients for this type of animation.. But I love it so much... Nothing like drawing.. Thank you so so much for this interview. It's very encouraging and hopeful. I feel more courageous now : )

Is this still true ? Everything I see from SCAD these days is done in Harmony. Candidly, I heard from someone who used to teach at SCAD that they would have liked to adopt TVPaint , but could not get adequate technical support for it.

Another very important thing to note as to the differences between 2d and 3d, is the use of the camera. Now, ive seen and have been a part of 3d animation almost since its inception, or at least since the very first sofware came to market for the SGI, and low end applications on the PC. Im talking Aegis animator, Sculpt 3d. WaveFront. Ive seen its growth. and one of 3d's most degrading aspects is how the camera is used. Film directors fell in love with 3d because the camera was freed from the confines of real world constraints. In 3d the camera can do anything be anywhere, which all has led to so many bad shots. On one end, the director has a chance to do something kinda inventive, on the other hand an unlimited about of errors become possible. So what did we get. Float'y unnatural camera motion, Sweeping panorama's that a real helicopter would never be capable of shooting. And the biggest mistake of them all.. not locking the camera down. The camera can be used in many ways, but ultimately its the viewers perspective of a scene. We as people are confined to our reality. I dunno about you but i dont go flying off like a bird around town, so whenever i see such a shot it immediately dispells reality. It makes otherwise decent animation look game-like. All because the director has taken the easy approach to get a shot that would be otherwise impossible. 2d typically is constrained. Not alot'a camera motion, basic placement of shots followed by cuts in edits, Our brains can relate to such visual situations far better, and overall it all makes for visuals far easier to digest, far easier to accept the content for what it is, as it stays fixed in the relm of reality.

Wow, that was a very interesting take on CG camera! :O I do both as well, and I've considered 3D camera a definite plus until now. I suppose in 2D you would simulate a camera movement only if it was absolutely necessary for delivering the shot.

What I don’t like about some 2d animation is when they use a technique where they drag a certain body part to the next frame. Or just doing “puppet” animation. Cuz I feel like that technique is pretty overused, and that’s just not my style of doing animation. I wanna do the traditional 2d feely animation and not have the characters move like puppets or robots. I am interested in animating in TV Paint in the future!

It depends on where you're looking.i think it's becoming less viable to making a living off of in the traditional sense if that's how you qualify if it's dead or not, she pretty much explains it in the video. As much as i dislike flash (animate) it does it's deserve some credit, toon boom is next in terms of industry. The esoteric answer is it only dies if you let it.
