I recently graduated high school and was originally planning on going straight to university for sciences until my friend asked me why I wasn't pursuing art which was sort of a hobby of mine. His disappointment left me questioning why I was doing what I was doing and then I kind of woke up in a sense and felt the greatest feeling of determination ever. In one day, I realized I could never be truly happy with my life if I didn't become an animator so I could bring to life the characters and stories I've been creating for years.

man, this is inspiring to hear. It's great that you have decided to take control of your own life instead of living to satisfy others. Respect to your friend for encouraging you to follow your passion too. I made the same decision about 3 or 4 years ago when doing my A level exams. I had gotten back from a long walk. I sat down in my living room, no thoughts going through my head. Something took control of me. A voice said "Mum, I want to learn animation at University." Best decision of my life. Remember, commitment is much more powerful than inspiration. If you can fully commit to a routine, over time you can move mountains. Inspiration is the spark but commitment is the flame. YOU CAN DO IT !!! Give the world everything you have got

Wow, thank you so much. I have to say, I have some big dreams, but I believe that with hard work and support, someday I might be able to have my own small studio where I work with close friends through the entire process of bringing a story to life...someday.

How very fortunate, I only discovered that I wanted to pursue animation when I had already done my first degree and masters degree. Imagine I use 6 years just to discover that I'm going in the wrong direction. I have been watching these tutorials and I have really improved ever since and I'm sure in the near future I will be quitting my job and doing animation full time.

I discovered your channel recently and I gotta say that it's some good stuff. And this video is pure gold! Some valuable advice you give here. I've been struggling with the idea of making a living on animation and I've been thinking about all the possible ways to do it. This video really helps me to see all the options I could explore. I specially love the idea of creating my own small studio, but unfortunatly neither of my closest friends are animators, so I guess I would be on my own xD Anyways, keep it up man! You're doing a great job!

nice dude, you share the same dream as me. If you set your commission price high enough you, you can hire people to work on the project with you. the other option is making online friendships to the point where you or they move locations to be in the same place. Good luck!

In the video, it appears to be an older Wacom Cintiq. I recommend the Artisul D13 as an alternative with a larger screen. The downside is the Artisul driver software is very shitty.

I wish I had run across this back when it was posted! I went to school for animation i the early 2000's just when Disney laid off their Florida Studio teams..... *hangs head* Everything went 3D and I couldn't even find basic clean up work. So many 2D studios either got bought out or closed up shop. I turned to Graphic design and web design (which were my hobbies in college).

Tbh, im trying to pursue business/being an entrepreneur, then when i questioned myself today "what kind of business would i do tho?" Yesterday, i noticed that elderly people always say "do what makes u feel alive and follow ur dreams", i thought "if i do, i wont be able to give my mom the life she deserves", thats why i wanted to be an entrepreneur, but then i do know in the back of my mind, i will never be satisfied with doing just that. And then, i prayed to the lord for guidance, if business is for me and what kind of business id do, it says in the scriptures that if u pray for something and u believe ud get an answer to, u will feel it in your heart, a warm sensation. I wondered "when will that happen for me.....?" Then today, i watched a vid about a guy driving around a rich neighborhood askijg people how they got their millions, then this old man said "just find something you love to do and make sure your the best at it" then when he said that the drawings i drew flashed in my mind. I realized how much i love to draw and animate. I also realized how much im dying to show the world my stories, my art and my passion. I felt so determined for the first time in my life. And thats when i felt the warm sensation in my heart. I told my grandma but ofcourse i was reluctant coz i might sound arrogant and selfish, but she said, that its wonderful, and that i should do what i love, she also said that my mom wouldnt mind that much. Im glad, my grandma helped me erase some of the burdens in my mind and heart. And this is how i got here. Im glad i realized this while im still 15, so that i can further pursue my dreams, learn and etc. Hopefully i could connect with people who share the same passion as me. Thanks for the tips anyway.

That's great! I understand both drives. I have both drives. When I went to university, it surprised me to see some people being lazy at their so-called "passion". If it was really their passion, they would have no problem putting in hard work 10 hour days. I think their real passion was smoking grass and watching reality tv. Well I'm now reporting from the other side, as someone who has financial success in their 20s as a 2d animator, running my own animation business, working on creative projects. You can have both. Just work relentlessly at it and cut out the stuff that isn't getting you anywhere. A lot of the things you try will be dead-ends. Be prepared to throw your old plan out the window when you find a better way. Stay true to your word. FINISH WHAT YOU STARTED even if it kills you. Make long-term investments as well as short-term investments and wait for them to play out. Continue to iterate and choose projects which enable you to learn and grow grow grow your skillset. You got this.

Can you make a video about how you go about pricing as a freelance animator?
@zephyrdagonheart1208
@zephyrdagonheart1208 4 жыл бұрын
So I recently was accepted into a college in my hometown for animation. I plan on doing freelance work, but I'm quite nervous. I feel like I should join a studio so I can have practice doing professional work, but I want to have my own studio that I made and do my own major projects. So what should I do? Should I be at a studio for a few years or should I start right off as a freelancer after my college graduation?
@HowardWimshurst
@HowardWimshurst 4 жыл бұрын
MOST people choose to work for a studio after they graduate. You can do what you like with that information. I chose to ignore it and go freelance straight away. It was easy for me to do this because i was already getting a lot of freelance work offers and i wanted to waste no time in growing my own business. Also, i believe that universities encourage studio over feeelancing simply because that it what they know and understand. It is the conventional way of doing things, but there is a big industry shift towards freelancing currently happening. Studios hire way less industry staff and hire way more remote freelancers. The key is that you should be putting in the work while you are in education so that when you come out you step straight into paying work which brings in money. If you want to get into a studio, you better be sending your portfolio and networking with studio workers (that often leads to a back-door entrance into a studio position) If you plan on freelancing, you better be putting your work out there on KZbin, Vimeo, Tumblr, Twitter etc. + developing a great website.

@HowardWimshurst
@HowardWimshurst 4 жыл бұрын
Hey thanks for the idea! I was originally making a 2D animation book - but as I was making it I realized that it would be much better as a video series, because video is the natural medium for seeing animation - books have always been kinda awkward for learning animation because it is harder to feel the animation when it is being laid out as a sequence of thumbnail images. So yeah, i used the book I wrote as the basis for my new online course; getting Started in 2D Animation. I also wrote two small books to go with it: The Animator's Checklist and the Animator's Workbook. You can download the first one for free. The second one is exclusive to members inside the course. www.animatorguild.com/courses.html
