Ever notice that on best-seller lists, 80-90% of authors are female? Across all genres. So unless men just can't write as well as women, I'm thinking that there's more to the story than ability. In fact book review sites show the same skew towards female authors; almost like reviews of books drive their sales. Which they do. SO the gender bias seems to originate with reviewers/editors who are mostly women and who -- unintentionally or not -- favor female perspectives over males. Or maybe men just can't write as well as women.
@bbg385
@bbg385 Ай бұрын
I think there is definitely a gender bias. I’ve seen a lot of people complaining about mal writers or why they won’t read works by men.
@CodexPotter
@CodexPotter Ай бұрын
I think this one is complicated because for so long all these lists were male dominated. I think it's natural that it swung like a pendulum and will someday even out. Like I don't read romance personally but historically romance was considered trashy and embarrassing so women would hide reading it but it's become more acceptable recently.
@bbg385
@bbg385 Ай бұрын
@@CodexPotter I think you’re right. I think it’s really complicated discussion to have because the pendulum always swings back-and-forth and I think it would be better if the pendulum sat in the middle. I read so many great books that won’t get talked about on the Internet because of who the writer is or was And I’ve never read a book based on the writers, gender or identity. I want to read the book. I never research writers. I just want to read a good book.

It's a herd mentality. I never enjoyed watching videos of girls "reviewing" the same books that were definitely not sent by publishers in exchange. Do your own thing, don't imitate these faceless copycats. They are just like the books they "review".

I found your channel recently. You were the only one talking about authors I like to read. Bret Easton Ellis’ The Shards was an awesome book. Yet everyone is talking about Colleen Hoover. They love her , they hate her. I don’t care! It’s hard to find intelligent commentary on books. So far your channel, CriminOlly, Supposedly Fun, Eric Karl Anderson, and Willow Talks Books are my go to channels. Everything else is one long commercial about books that are meh. All I can say is I appreciate your work on You Tube. You do amazing work here ❤.

I have always appreciated your reviews and your videos, I am sick of the same old same old copy cat book channels so over the years I have highly enjoyed what u say and review... I left booktube years ago because I didn't fit in myself either and I am a female but it was because my reviews and opinions didn't copy them at all + I have a mouth to defend myself no matter what. I am planning to do a channel to review books again and other stuff but I will do it my way and not care about the booktube community nor be apart of it again.

Thank you for sharing your experience here! It's really disheartening to hear some of the challenges that you have experienced with having your opinions being discredited just because of your gender, thats not right whatsoever!!! I have only been on booktube for a year but i have found growing a platform on here to be extremely challenging, as well as trying to make authentic connections with other creators. I have also struggled with not feeling welcomed as well and its difficult to eant to continue when you are feeling isolated or like your opinions dont matter. I hope you will continue to share your opinions on books because there is definitely a need for more male booktubers and for a far more diverse experience than we currently see on booktube which is OVERsaturated at this point with YA fantasy and romance reviewers 😅 Im always looking for people who go against the norm!!!

If only we could consume content based on its merit and not on the lables that might be attatched to the creator. I'm not going to say that lables arent im portant, but when you let them rule your desisions you arent doing anyone any favors in the longrun. That any anyone that does the whole "I just want to watch the pretty girls (heavy breathing)," are just creeps anyways, no mater what gender.

Leaf by Leaf, Better than food and Tristan and the classics are some good booktube channels by men. They tend to deal in more serious literature though, rather than YA. I think the issues you're highlighting are more prominent re YA and popular literature. Jack Edwards does pretty well with those genres though, and also classics. Anyway, I encourage you to keep going and do what you feel called to. You will find an audience.

I think most of the booktubers I watch are men. I think the space is just too crowded, and there isn’t too much innovation. If your goal is to be part of the community, I don’t think you can just show up and get a welcome. I think you need to do your own thing and generate your own community, then you’ll have room to spread into the wider community. But that’s just my thoughts, could be talking out my rear.

It very much feels like tables have turned, when women have to fight to be included in male dominated spaces. Doesn’t make it right, but I can kinda understand it. Maybe some kind of hurt retaliation thats not even fully understood by the perpetrators. It’s a bit shameful to keep perpetuating things that we know have hurt us in our own community for so long. I myself as a woman am not finding much solace with women talking about books on here because its so FULL of the garbo hyper erotic romance shien quality books that just kill me. I’ve been finding so much better recommendations without having to sift through repetitive crap from men on here. Just stick to your guns buddy, tides will change at some point. 💕
