USC Dornsife Center for the Political Future (CPF) hosted The Honorable Karen Bass, Mayor of Los Angeles, in conversation with Spring 2024 CPF Fellow Michael Tubbs on Tuesday, March 26. They discussed good governance at a local level, the challenges of politics in Los Angeles, and creating meaningful policy in a dynamic city.

Karen Bass is the 43rd Mayor of Los Angeles and the first woman and second African American to be elected as the city's chief executive. She started her term with a focus on reducing the unhoused population and increasing safety and opportunity in every part of Los Angeles. She is a former member of the U.S. House of Representatives, where she served for over a decade. Before her election to Congress, she represented the 47th District in the California State Assembly, where she spent a year as the Speaker of the Assembly.
Michael Tubbs (moderator) is the Special Advisor to California Governor Gavin Newsom for Economic Mobility and Opportunity; the Founder of Mayors for a Guaranteed Income, and the Founder of End Poverty in California. In 2016 he became the City of Stockton’s first African-American Mayor and the youngest Mayor of any major city in American history. His study group at USC, “Being a Mayor in the 21st Century - The Room Where it Happens (At Least Locally),” focused on good governance, policy, politics, and innovation.
