The People's Court

The People's Court

Күн бұрын

The plaintiff says she unknowingly rented her place to the defendant and high-schoolers who were celebrating graduation. She claims they trashed the house, left beer cans everywhere, and broke a storm door. She’s suing for all the damages. The defendant says the plaintiff is blowing it out of proportion. She claims the place looked just fine and denies they left beer cans anywhere.

And because my parents taught me how to behave and to not destroy other people's property when I'm renting someone else's beautiful home for any time frame imaginable. It's embarrassing to humanity when peeps throw down the age of minority card to try and wiggle their way out of being responsible for knowingly leaving a mess behind in their wake. What bullshit. If you're old enough to "go potty" on your own, then you're old enough to know better about not leaving a mess behind you for someone else to clean for you. Grow tf up.

...The judge is telling the Plaintiffs to 'flip the cushion' to conceal the deliberate 'red ink marks' all over the cushion rather than to pay the price quoted to them by a professional to replace it. ...And if a litigant was to come into her courtroom and tell her that they rented a high-end rental house for the weekend and '''flipped the cushion'''' only to find 'red ink marks' all over the reverse side, then Judge Milian would be the first to state that it was 'sneaky' and 'tacky,' and she would most likely held it against the renter in part of her judgment.

It was honestly kind of shocking, and I think the judges laughing and shrugging off damage contributed to the teens attitude in the hallway. They wouldn't even apologize for their own behavior! "No we weren't inconsiderate because we didn't intend to do damage". I'm sorry?! You broke multiple things in their home while *not taking into consideration* how that would affect the home owners. Then tried to hide damage like the pillow (which wtf why didn't the judge take into consideration that the kids literally stuffed it in a closet to hide it like 5 year olds) and just said nothing and offered to pay for nothing. That would be INCONSIDERATE. And definitely merits an apology. Ugh, the ending of this was infuriating.

I don't think the couple found the damage so funny. It's not just the money, but the violation of having your things willfully damaged. I understand that accidents happen, but come on, this house was treated like a zoo. And, everyone on the defendants side just laughs off the plaintiff's aggravation. If it was their property that was damaged so needlessly, I doubt they would be saying "kids will be kids".

WOW!! That's just a tiny example of what we can look forward to with that generation's attitude. Such a sense of entitlement. The general point the judge was trying to get through to those teens was about showing respect to another's property, and if you're not then you'll have to be accountable for damaging that property. Those teens didn't receive even ONE WORD of her advice through their thick, spoiled, over cuddled skulls.

Mid-Century Modern furniture is hugely popular right now. An original leather recliner from the 60's? I couldn't even find one for sale. I found a set of original MCM leather chairs--not recliners--just regular chairs--on 1stdibs for $7,500. (Edit: Set of two chairs) A brand new recliner made to look like MCM is $2,000. Maybe you could find a cheaply made knock-off for $600 ? I am absolutely stunned that anyone would put an original 1960's MCM leather recliner in a rental property, then rent it out to kids. That's insane.

All I know is that while I had a lot of learning to do at 18, I married at 18 and didn’t drink and didn’t go to parties and wanted nothing to do with those who did. It wasn’t my scene. I’ve never damaged anyone’s property nor would even think of such a thing. I truly don’t understand the youth of today. Entitlement is so widespread. And yes, I’m still happily married to the same man 27 years later. So it’s very possible to act like an adult at 18.

Judge Milian and The People's Court is by far my favorite TV court show and I agree with her rulings most of the time but I think she went a little easy on these kids. I get that kids will be kids and I went to my fair share of parties when I was young and people did a lot of dumb things but kids need to learn that there are consequences for their actions and based on the comments by those kids at the end I don't think they learned anything nor did they take responsibility for their actions. They're all in for a rude awakening as they enter adulthood.

Really surprised Judge Milian said nothing about the underage drinking. Did the mom even know about that? She looked like either she didn't know or was nervous about what the judge was going to say, but again - no words of wisdom for the mom either. I'm shocked. I feel like JM wanted to be the cool judge in this episode and didn't think about the message she was sending. Who bought the alcohol for all those minors? So many things could've gone wrong... If someone had gotten hurt - the homeowner would probably have been liable. The defendant should've had to pay for the new cushion, and $600 for a mid century leather recliner is ridiculous. They go for thousands! I didn't enjoy this case at all.
