I've been living in Bahrain as an expat for almost nine months now and I was living in Kuwait before this. I get so many questions from women who are moving to the Middle East with burning questions. 1. What should I wear in the Middle East? 2. Is it safe in the Middle East as a woman? 3. What's it like to be a woman living in the Middle East. As a woman who has lived in Kuwait and Bahrain (and travelled around the Middle East too) I'm shedding some light on expat life in the Middle East for western women.

As a bahraini women I say yes you can do all that drive alone, go whatever you want and dress whatever want (btw i dont wear hijab nor abaya) as long as you feel safe in any areas in bahrain, I go outside alot so its always feels safe to me

I enjoy watching your videos! I’m about to move to Bahrain around February 2020. I was wondering how healthcare is over there? I know that can kind of be a personal question but I’m concerned about finding a dentist, primary care doctor, etc.

That's amazing! I hope you enjoy it. Healthcare really depends on your insurance. For the longest time my employer didn't give me insurance (which was illegal, but hey) and I struggled to get good healthcare. Now that I have my insurance card, it's fine. There are lots of really excellent healthcare professionals here if you have the right insurance to cover you.

The government hospitals are free in Bahrain. Once you have your identification card you are assigned a hospital close to where you live and there are no fees.

Actually when you are dressed modesty in the middle east you are respecting the people there like even in Bahrain we wont say anything to you but your dress might make us uncomfortable 😓 and it makes us very happy to see you dressing modestly 😇.

We have a culture & religion and thanks to them we grow up to respect people . what is considered wrong for us can be considered right for you different cultures different upbringing but still we respect you ,and the least you can do when you visit another country that welcomes you is respecting the people no? Also Dressing modestly doesn’t mean covering up 😅

Did you have to find a male guardian to make decisions for you & to give you permission to do things and go places?

Not at all. For most of my time living here, I was alone. Now my fiancé is here with me, but I think he knows me better than to try to make decisions for me haha.

@@AimeeRebecca I just know that I have been doing research about the Middle East and I have seen details about women's rights or lack of in different parts before deciding if I want to go and I have seen facts that in Saudi Arabia for example, that every woman has to have a male guardian that makes all of her decisions and has to give his permission for her to go anywhere or do anything even if her guardian is her 5 year old brother and that if a woman breaks any rules she can be punished with a MINIMUM of being whipped. I could endure being punished as I have been whipped and worse in my life already but I also read that the maximum punishment is death so I am afraid of that. I just wanted to ask another woman to get the truth about at least where she is familiar with because I know things can be different even in different parts of the same city.

@@shanialover Firstly, I'm really sorry that you've been through that. That sounds awful. I'm not clear on how things work in Saudi because I've never been. I've met teachers who work there and live on compounds and they like it well enough. In Kuwait and Bahrain it's definitely not the case that you need a man to make decisions for you. I have my own bank account, have an apartment rented in my name and can come and go as I please. Bahrain is more liberal than Kuwait in a lot of ways, but I never had any issues in either country with regards to being a woman. I hope that helps.

@@AimeeRebecca I forgot to mention that the sources I saw said that women also can't get a passport although I have one but maybe they would take it after I got there and that women can't open a bank account or travel in public transportation, only private hired taxis and that even in restaurants the women have to sit in the family area and their male escorts in a separate area. So even if I found a male guardian, even if it was a boy, I wouldn't be able to be with him all the time. It sounds like I would have to depend on one no matter where I was just in case I went to a different location, with his permission of course.

@@shanialover I've heard that in some parts of Saudi single men and women are seated in different parts of the restaurant, but I don't think that's the case everywhere. But I'm really not sure because I've never been.

Thanks for the love! This is a good question haha. I personally don't like clubs, but I do enjoy going out for cocktails with my friends to a nice bar or with a meal. Clubs are just too noisy and crazy for me 😂 I think when something is a part of your culture (and no matter what anybody says, alcohol is definitely a part of British culture) then you don't ever question it. 'Going out for a couple of drinks' is a social thing where I come from so that's how I usually catch up with my friends. I know alcohol doesn't need to be involved for that, but that's the best way I can explain it. It doesn't really make any sense to me either honestly haha.

It just depends on the person. I drank a little here and there when I was in my early twenties, but it got old really fast and I haven’t drank in like fifteen years. But on TV and in the movies they portray everyone as a party animal or alcoholic.
