I've started using my notebooks less as journals and more like the Commonplace Books in A Series of Unfortunate Events. I write down facts and quotes as I come across them. It's nice to accumulate things that spoke to me. I very much enjoy all your videos, Cari--keep up the good work!

I bribe myself to do cardio by using reading. My local gym has a recumbent bike, so I go daily and read while pedaling. I average about 13-14 miles in the 45 minutes that I am there, and can usually read one book a week. I have stuck with this for 3 years now.

what helps me to journal, is to remember this is ONLY for me. i am not writing for someone else to understand. and there are no rules. if i want to draw a picture on one page, i do. if i want to write a poem, or just a quick note, or a topic, or "notes of today" and using different pens, colors, and styles, so that it LOOKS cute and girly - my style. :) turns it into a person art journal that reflects many different moods and if some pages look awful or empty, that's ok. i have finally learned to let go of the perfectionism i used to hold with my journals. it's not suppose to be perfect, it's just for me. so that's my tip. another tip: buy a fun keyboard -i bought logitech pop keys - and then i connect it to my notes on ipad, and so i find a different type pf pleasure in that, and i write soooooo much on that. it feels like i'm typing on a typewriter. :) and it's got ASMR effect haha it helps on those days where you just don't want to use pen and paper. i hope you have success this time around with your new journal 💜 thanks for a lovely vlog. you always help me reflect. hugs 💜

Something I do when I'm having a meh day or bad mental health day is a "reset" routine. You could also call it my "have you tried turning it off and back on" routine. Generally, if I noticed I'm in a funk and hobbies aren't help or are making it worst. I'll go shower... I usually have to pep talk myself to go shower but for whatever reason it's like a switch in my brain. Kinda like starting the day over. Rest setting the house and atmosphere I'm in also helps.

As SOON as you said Japanese Lit and lists in the same sentence, I knew it was going to be The Pillow Book. My Asian Lit prof loved that book so much that our end of semester project was to write our own TPB inspired lists and he put them all together into our own class pillow book of sorts. I still have it and it's wonderful to go back and read again.

I think for me it's always reading, reading reading -- it can be novels, or just manhua -- getting lost in a fictional world kind of resets me every time. Journaling and scrapbooking really helps me too. I find that taking myself into another world or just being present in a moment just takes me out of my head or whatever anxious funk I've gotten caught up in -- usually, due to the internet / screen time. This is a very clear sign of me being close to my 30s, but cleaning! Whenever I feel so unmotivated to do anything, I'll always have time for cleaning -- and it has never failed me 🌟🌙

I like watching CariCakes for my mental health. I like feeling apart of a community who cares about the same values as I do. I like the parking far away from a store I’m going to, to get some exercise. I like doing exercises as I walk like raising my knees to my hand. I like doing stretches if I’m waiting. Oh ya and dancing for some serious workouts. Also riding around the city on a bicycle is great for cardio and easy on the knees. Physically I’m 30 but spiritually I’m 100 and like to take things sloooow.

I really needed this, thank you! ❤ I've been having a really bad time mental health-wise as I'm living abroad for the first time and I have never been this lonely and I'm also scared that I'm wasting my limited amount of time here. Journaling helps me too! I'm writing as if I'm having a conversation with a friend. What help me to disconnect from my reality and problems are long walks when I'm not looking at a map and just letting myself explore freely for an hour or so. Also colouring is the #1 thing that gets me into a zone where I can just turn my thoughts off which is quite refreshing.

I have so many empty notebooks because I'm a sucker for a pretty journal and then totally fail to journal anything. I think long car rides with good music or a walk in a natural setting (woods, near water, etc.) always help me feel better. But the big thing I do is what you mentioned last, setting the mood. I put on a good playlist, burn a candle, etc. Such a calming video, thank you!!

I've been doing this thing where I try to do something 'fun' every week. It's something I plan for myself and that i look forward to, like a reward for getting through the week. I try good food, see something nice, and just treat myself. I can't spend a lot of money rn, so it's whatever I can do for cheap, but I've been having fun visiting landmarks or saving up to go to gardens. I'm currently on a work-focused sabbatical so I figured I should make sure I don't only work and burn myself out, but honestly I might continue to do this for as long as I can. Before I would just sleep, read, and catch up on work on my days off, but actually going out at least once a week for something that's just for me is... it feels like a gift to myself. A gift of time and memories. I think it's the act of giving myself time to simply be, instead of making every moment count towards being productive. To make loving myself a priority, instead of just trying to find whatever scraps of enjoyment like I did before. It probably helps a lot that I'm not working two jobs and helping out my family/friends all the time anymore, either lol I also really feel what you were saying about taking a trip by yourself to feel more confident in your abilities- I recently took up traveling again and it was so scary at first (even though I've literally traveled by myself for a year around the world solo when i was 19 lol) but it's really helped remind me that even if I am in a 'bad' situation, I can work through it. Makes the rest of life a little less scary and overwhelming. Also, I love your videos and the calm, open vibe you always have! And the B-roll is always so lovely to watch. Definitely inspiring for my own vlogs- something I've taken up for fun so I can remember this time and to give myself a creative outlet. So far I've been really enjoying just losing myself in the editing and having my brain focused on something else, but I still have a lot to learn. Still, each video is like a little photobook of memories that I'm gifting to myself b/c I have such a bad memory xD

I loved this video. Such an important reminder to stop rushing and to take a step back to listen to yourself and your needs. The attention span issue is something I struggle with a lot, I get distracted way to easily. For me, setting the mood with music, lighting, cozy vibes and tea is a very important thing. A good routine for me is my weekday morning exercise that I do with my friend via Zoom. We started doing this during the first year of Covid and have kept it up since then. We meet up on Zoom every morning at the same time and do a 10-20 min KZbin class together. Sometimes just a stretch, or it could be yoga or pilates, specific workouts.. It‘s a really great start to my day, I recommend. Oh and also, Sunday mornings in bed with a tea and your new video is a very beloved routine, too. I look forward to it every week. Thank you for contributing to my happiness, Cari! Much love ❤

This was so incredibly lovely. I love that these tips almost border on .... tricking? yourself to take care of yourself? I know that I struggle a lot with not allowing myself to take care of myself, but if I can frame it as taking care of someone in the future (even if part of me knows that persion is me), it is SO much easier. Haha, maybe because I think of it as a chore that way? And then later, it's a special surprise treat! Even the journaling tip of writing list items until they turn into sentences organically spoke so much to my brain! Thank you as always, cari!

I used to dislike going anywhere by myself- the movies and out to eat. Now, I’m a bit more comfortable with it. I still am not crazy about going to the movies by myself because I want to discuss it with someone in real time. But that’s just me. I like being with people. Self care is a definite must do and a “yes please”. Your host seemed nice. The morning fog was such a vibe. It reminded me of San Fransisco.

Hiking. I never stop loving hiking. Climbing hills with that goal of reaching the top. No music, no podcasts, no distractions. Halfway through I get a huge rush that I don’t get from just walking, or working out indoors. If there are woods and trees it’s a bonus. So anytime my mood is low , if I can just force myself outside, find some nature, and put one foot in front of the other, I know I’ll come home a changed woman. I use to joke I’m literally running away, but I always come back better.

I love journaling but it can become overwhelming for some reason??? So I’ve made it my whatever I’m feeling journal which has helped a lot. It’s a collection of life events, thoughts, sketches, lists, book reviews, quotes, leaves and pictures taped to it and it has helped me more just allowing free range and not trying to guilt trip myself into it. Love these new ideas to add on to it. Love you lots Cari!! 💗💗💗

What works for me is a mix of physical (not necessarily extenuating), mental and artistic activities. There's something very therapeutic about cleaning/decluttering and cooking something healthy and delicious for me (it feels like I'm giving myself so much love.) I also love to draw and journal, but I don't practice them so frequently - and that's okay! Also, having a dog gives me extra points of wellness! She makes me laugh every single day and makes me stick to a schedule I have to commit to. Thanks for this video, it's so calming and lovely! Have a wonderful week, Cari!

Update: What sticks for me? Music is a big one...listening to music..cooking..baking..podcasts...Books..drawing/painting..going for a walk...tea..candles..Yoga..and old movies when I am too tired for anything else. Also, a weekend with a good old friend always helps aswell. I love to write...but it requires time and energy which, having a fulltime job, just rarely ever happens...Will try to follow your suggestion with the lists though...

One that sticks and that you do too, is drinking a good cup of tea! I’ll try being more consistent with my journaling. i like the different methods you shared #TeamNotebooksGalore Also, I loved the idea of small reading times like 10 min to start with and focus, and the concept of doing something for your future self, be it +1 hour self or +5 months self. I did a solo trip to London back in October, and it was so mentally helpful. I went on the trip thinking I was happy with life and came back, realizing I was avoiding stuff that makes me happy as it wasn't "perfect." I had a big to-do list of things I was saving for the right moment, and going on my solo trip made me realize I wouldn't ever find perfect if I waited for it. Such a freeing experience that couldn't have happened without this alone time. So highly recommend doing a solo trip.

Nice vlog! For me, it's writing, writing fictional stories is escaping to another world, like you already said. It's like taking vacation from your surroundings and yourself. And when this doesn't work, taking long walks into the nature. And watching intensively dramas, but that's always a sign, that I'm unconsciously seeking for escape and that I need to reflect why to find a solution.

love your vids! i would say what has helped me in recent months is what some peeps are calling cycle syncing - so syncing the activities, workouts, meals, etc. that most closely match your energy levels created by the hormonal shifts during a cycle. i too was always feeling crappy that’d i’d be all excited to do workouts for a couple of weeks and then drop off for weeks on end. i realized that there are certain phases in my cycle where i have more energy and that i should be scheduling more intense workouts during that point, and the days that i have less energy, i can focus more on walking and yoga, etc. doing different workouts based on what phase i am in that week helps me keep things interesting and i feel less disappointed in myself because i’m listening to my body more. i’ve also learned to map my social calendar and personal reflection/development to these phases. some phases you will feel more confident and want to be social/do more at work, and other phases you may want to nest more and be more reflective, etc. i still struggle with consistency and sticking to plans, but at least i have a better idea of when during the month i’m more inclined to do more, be more social, dedicate more time to rest, etc. i’m still learning about it but maybe its something to consider!!

funny enough i’ve started to journal because of a class assignment where i had to keep a journal for 10 weeks. i had sooooo much fun when i had to sit down and reflect on the past week that i want to keep at it even though the assignment is done with. i love your idea of just writing down lists and not having to write paragraphs and i’ve seen comments on people who write down quotes that spoke to them which i love and will try to do. the journal i’m writing on is digital though as i love the freedom digital provides, i can put photos straight from my photo library on entries. and there’s the added bonus of not having to carry tons of highlighters and pens as all the tools are available from a simple tap.

I’ve never felt this before but lately I have been feeling a creative void in my activities. I have been craving creativity like I would crave a pizza 😅 I am not particularly artistic but I do enjoy what I call structured art (crochet, card making, sewing off a pattern, etc). I have weirdly been wanting to draw and paint though which I have never been great at but I am trying to make time to listen to my inner self and do it!! I think my best form of self care is listening to my inner self when it is trying to tell me something about what it needs, or what those around me need. Sometimes that’s reading, or gaming, or now painting I guess 🤷🏻‍♀️

talking about journaling, some years ago I had a really rough time and I had trouble remembering which days I felt good, which ones bad and I wanted some sort of statistics and a way of seeing what activities helped me feel good. I downloaded Daly and used it consistently for like 4 years, and used it as my diary too cause you could write your thoughts. I can't use it anymore cause I don't have space in my phone but super recommend it! I think I'm going to go back to paper now, I'm much better mentally and know myself and what makes me feel good do I don't need the statistics part. I miss reading my old entries tho

thanks for sharing. I really need to be on myself from time to time to recharge and that's part of my selfcare, but that was the last couple of years of course not really possible. I noticed that my anxiety gets higher if I check the news constantly, so i stopped that, as well as just putting my phone away. I tried journaling a couple of times, but that doesn't work for me but i totally understand it works for others. I do like to keep a journal when traveling but as you said at home, when probably needing it the most, it doesn't work.

It's so lovely to hear you talk about travelling solo--I've been trying to get myself used to it as well! I'm pretty good if I have a specific goal or task in mind (buy this here, pick up this, complete x assignment at the coffee shop), but when I think about doing something relaxing or not structured (go to a cafe and draw/read, go to this landmark and walk around, etc)...I tend to not know what to do/put it off/end up not doing it. Trying to work on it haha But seeing you do a lot of solo trips is inspiring me to get out there and follow through =)

@@caricakes Haha I feel like I'm 50/50 on solo vs group cafe time. But I just finished the video and I totally agree that long bus rides or any other travel (airplane, train, boat, etc) are sooo good! A great time to process when things feel cluttered or overwhelming!

As soon as I saw your grey backpack I was like yes adventure! Where are we going 😂❤️ something that helps escape my head (and that I should do more often too) is dancing and signing by myself. Just putting on my earphones and saying bye to the world. If you live with your family say that it's for your mental health so it's good for them too

You are such an inspiration voor me to do things alone and see things in a different view. This summer I started to do more things alone, even went a whole day to a fantasy festival alone. A year ago I would have never done that.... It made me realize that if I want to do fun things I shouldn't have to depend on others, why should I skip or miss out on those things, because there is no one to go with me? Looking forward to more tips and views on selfcare, thank you for everything you create and share

loved the video :) i also have a list of things that I try to do _regularly_ (daily would be great but my self care is letting go of that expectation). I've also learnt that reward-based motivation works best for me. so every time I do one of my self-care habits, I add a quarter to my book buying budget (because I have a book buying problem, lol).

The weather has been so odd here, too!! Also I feel blessed because we had extra videos from you this week didn't we? And yes it's so hard to make self care stick or actually take care of yourself. For me I've been reading and making reading a priority for me in my life. I've found that I do more during my reading time it helps me separate out my self care time. I've been taking notes on my arcs and also making sure I write down anything and everything I feel while I'm using it. I have multiple pages.. but I've notices this year I've done so much more self care because of reading! I've also found making sure I go for a walk, listening to my Playlist and just singing at the top of my lungs! I also agree with gaming, I use playing pokemon as escaping.. well besides my reading! When you were solo traveling ,can I ask what the sign with the swastika was for?

Hope you enjoyed your trip! That weather was also giving me Twilight vibes! Thanks for all the tips. They are really helpful in the stressful holiday season. I think my biggest form of self care is working out. I actually really like working out, but to make sure I never feel like skipping I always pair it with something I like. For example, I only let myself watch K-dramas when I ride the elliptical. Works like a charm!

I'm a little behind on watching your videos, Cari, but this one was perfectly timed, as I am still working on my goals for 2023 in my new planner. You just said something that prompted me to add "plan more solo excursions to get out of the house" to my goals. Thank you! I've been reading Care of the Soul by Thomas Moore for my first book of the new year. It was published 25 years ago. So many powerful statements that my highlighter is working overtime. Have you read it?

I have been trying to get into journaling lately but it's hard to get started as I have to move past the fear of my mom or really anyone going through it lol. Nearly decade ago, she went through a silly diary prepubescent me wrote and it was quite important to me too seeing how I had just suddenly left the country I grew up in and shifted back to my native place. Plus I was a kid who had (still have) a hard time adjusting to new environments (in every way possible) and such strong sentimental bonds with my friends some of whom I knew since kindergarten. Needless to say, ultra religious mother and reading stuff about your daughter having an actual dumb crush doesn't mix well. She yelled at me for 5 hours the day before my exam for my hardest subject, didn't talk to me for weeks and brought it up condescendingly for at least 2 years until my grandmother asked her to drop it. Never realized how it evolved to become an actual trauma.
